The convex grind looks great! I've done many of them by hand! My personal preference however this video reminds me I need to do my Becker bk2 full height convex now :)
Thanks, man. It's a grizzly grinder, you can check out their website for more info. I think I paid $350.00 new for it about five or six years ago. Good starter grinder.
Good video.. I do it pretty much the same way, except I actually attach some 1/8" thick leather to my platen so that I get a smoother bump free grind when I'm rocking the bevel on. Nice knives :)
One thing i did notice is that my pressure is waay too much compared to what your doing on the refine segement. I went back up into the shop and tried to lighten up a little and voila! I think because of how much pressure i was putting on the blade it was eating too much of the bevel and spine intstead of blending the center (near the ricasso). I have no clue how you get the convex on the platen props on that man. I just try to go with the flat grind and then blend. Much thanks for the tips.
I have a slight problem with my grinds and found this vid. I start with a flat grind, but when i go to the slack belt there is an area where the blade meets the ricasso that wont blend no matter what i do. I also use a grizzly but ive had no success yet with this. What im I doing wrond here? Any tips at all would be very appreciated. Thanks, steve
Steve, Without seeing you grind this is gonna be a shot in the dark so keep that in mind. My guess is that you accidentally flatted that area. So when you grind on the slack belt the belt hits the bottom, skips the flat middle and then hits the top of the bevel. Next time try going back to the platen and making sure you have a smooth, continuous convex from spine to edge.
I've had that problem before and still do at times.
This is how I start grinding for a convex edge as well. I don't know if it is the right way, but it works well for me, and I have never had any complaints yet.
It's a grizzly grinder. It's cheap but I've made over 50 knives on it so far and it's held up great. No speed control so you have to watch what your doing.
Hey skinny, I would like to see a series of vids on building a knife{preferably the one you are building for me}from start to finish. Watching you grind that is getin me antsy!!!
One thing i may suggest is that you cool the blade down a lot more as i would be concerned that you may be losing the temper within the edge. Basicly i would dip the blade in water a lot more often, its slower but worth it if you want a blade that can keep a good edge for longer.

That is a very even curvature to get on a platen, nice job.

Thanks, brother. That's a good idea with the leather. I've thought about trying that but never got around to it. I might have to try it. Thanks!

@bindlestitch1 sometimes the leather overheats and smells burnt.. but it keeps working ;) Good luck on that BushBlade comp on BF.. looks like fun.

I am assuming you kept the knife from overheating and ruining the temper? Or, even better, hardened/tempered it AFTER you did the grinding?

@1013637
I do all my own heat treat, this is before heat treat. No need to worry about overheat the steel at this point.
Thanks, man.

Awesome, man. I'm glad you got it worked out.
Your way (flat grinding) is probably faster than the way I do it.

Happy grinding...!

Thanks, Gordon. Glad you liked it. That profile was originally designed by a friend of mine and I modified it a little to what it is now.

Thanks, Ok! I appreciate it, man.
I don't have any footage for Ia's knife but stay tuned, I've got footage coming up of how I make a knife.
Thanks again,

Who makes the grinder you are using? Looks like a larger baldor type.
