Arthur was in her 50's when she did her last film which was Shane. She then retired to Carmel, California until her death. She was beautiful in Shane and played a young pioneer mother who attracted 2 men, her husband and Shane. Comment below: Democracy does not mean Democrat and Republic does not mean Republican. Our education system at work!
I think Jean Arthur looks amazing for 48 years considering there was not plastic surgery in those days her and Barbara Stanwick looked fantantic when they reached their 50s and 60s wonder what their secret was!
Billy wilder cast one of the screen's greatest stars Jean Arthur in A Foreign Affair billed over the great Marlene Dietrich. A superb film set in Berlin after the end of WW2. The more I know of Jean Arthur and her great work in Capra films such as Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings,Ms Arthur's two greatest films George Stevens The More The Merrier and Shane one becomes puzzled why Ms Arthur left films so soon.
This movie is progressive goofiness. At around 4:20 the knitwit says.."if you give a hungry man a loaf of bread thats democracy" (nevermind who farmed the wheat and made the bread, thus giving to one man is taking from another...democracy nowadays is a codeword for socialism). The US of A is a Republic. This thing is another piece of real life that lends itself to rationale of blacklisting in Hollywood..

Jean Arthur was 48 years old when this was made. She certainly doesn't look her age.
