A really great bit of film, which really takes me back to when I was a kid when my Dad used to take me up to our local airfield to watch these take off during the Cold War; Several would fly in, whilst the next shift was taking off, and as these were our first line in early warning this rota system meant that there were Shackletons constantly in the air during this era.
I wish at these airshows the commentators would put a sock in it. The Griffon always sounds raucous in comparison to the Merlin. But, it was bigger and more powerful. For a long period it must have been very trying for the aircrews. But, they were made of sterner stuff in those days weren't they?
I can remember these things flying over my place in the 60 and 70's going out over the Atlantic on patrol. deafening with a full load of fuel! NNIICCEE!
I adore this aircraft, all shack fans i hope you all get a chane to see my page becasue i might be having a tribute, if i can figure out how to get make videos, im such a noob LMAO!
Fantastic video--wish it was longer. The sound of four Rolls Royce Griffons on song--that's not noise, that's music.Totally unique and my most favourite aircraft. Malky.
Aaaahhhh...memories! I spent part of my childhood in and around Forres in Scotland (1970s & 80s)and often saw (and more importantly heard)these graceful machines as they banked over the town. For me the engine sound was something beautiful, it had a certain X-factor that defied description but sent thrills down my spine. Great to see and hear one again!
we used to hear them every day just above billets, ive got a good sound system hooked up so it sounds pretty much like it used to, theres a static one at duxford ,so i can recall those times 52 years ago without relying too much on memmory.i used to work on raf hsl high speed launches ,cant find much on them,(vosper thornycroft)
i was based at raf st eval cornwall and worked on , airfield lighting, ihad just replaced a sodium flarepath unit when a shack doing cicuits and bumps flattened it iwas about 20 yards away at the time, airfield patrol roared up and spirited me of the duty runway. however i did get a free trip and a cup of tea in a shackelton soon after, "those were the days"
Dear bobdavidson602. This is fantastic. What a sight and sound. This takes me back to my childhood on summer holidays in 1960s Cornwall and days-out to RAF St Mawgan and seeing and listening to the "Shacks" doing circuits-and-bumps. I really appreciate you sharing this. Many, many thanks. Don B.
My dad flew Shacks back in the late 60s out of RAF Mawgan in Cornwall.

is the shackleton a recon bomber?

No - it was then an airborne radar - AEW, Airborne Early Warning.
