I'm used to PowerPoint 2007, so that interface makes a lot more sense to me. I do think you should put the buttons at the top though, and maybe add words under them? Other than that it seems like a great idea. Just make sure it is easy to show/hide so that people who don't like it don't have to complain.
the problem of the task pane is, that there isn't space to show enough Pane titles as text. You replaced the text by icon's in this prototype. But icons always mean a slower learning curve, because text is more descriptive.
The second problem is that some Impress functionality can only be accessed via menus/toolbars&dialogs and some other functionality can only be accessed via the task pane. This is not logic!
thanks for your comment. Don't worry, the old dialogs will stay where they are and will still be accessible through menus and keyboard shortcuts.
I trust in users to learn new things and I think the 'do not improve anything' attitude does not help anyone.
If you think the task pane is broken by design please share your arguments why it is broken and if you have alternatives other than 'stick with the status quo' I'm happy to hear them.
the new slide layout menus are quite cool, but the task pane is broken by design. You should not try to improve it, it's better to remove it and to move the functionality into the standard dialogs which the user know from everything else in OOo.
I don't believe that many users will learn the meaning of the new graphical buttons. I'm sure, the most users will try always all five buttons until they find the functionality they need.

Better if the buttons are in the top not on the right. It makes me feel the icons take up horizontal space.

And it's different to any other OOo application!
