You wrote this?? WOW! I've heard other covers of it, but nothing compares to yours. The way you start off seeming to be out of synch and then crash all the lines together is amazing! It's as exciting to watch as it is to listen to! LOVE IT!
@jazzyedwin24 Thanks Edwin, I started of with the Blues (rock) in the seventies but now I'm mixing it with Jazz influences,a nice concept, did you recognize the Octotonics? saludos Vic.
Great quircky, intriguing harmonic/melodic content.Ah the ol' 1+2 scale(1semitone,plus 2semitone).Love it! And I believe you're playing a G&L? Why people don't use/play these more than Fenders is beyond me. Well done-Thanks-Glenn
@UnitedEffect Thanks, this is a total hybrid guitar and pimped by myself, the only thing that's original Fender is the old Body(from the 70ties) (which I sandpapered and varnished myself) Pick-ups are Seymour Duncans. I like working on guitars myself, greetings Vic.
@Jazzguts Nice work.It looks and SOUNDS great. There's something to be said about playing an instrument you've worked on or upgraded yourself...it becomes more personal. Happy pickin' :0)
Three words - strange beautiful music. You really got it going! This is the first time I heard this octotonic...weird sound, but wonderful! Respect! ~ Daniel
@acodaniel1 Thanks Brother, well that's the best compliment you could give, when I write own Stuff it should be challenging to play,no use copying Stuff that has been done a trillion times here on the Tube then I feel I'm not using the full potential of this medium,if every one had this attitude this would be a different place, greetings Vic.
Hi Vic - absolutely love this ! Love the groove - tone and feel - the guitar is reall cool looking too as well as the note choices onthe phrasing ! Illbe back to check out more ! like the solo at 3:03
I want details on your guitar and the amp you're using...Fender Strat of what derivation? What wood is that Strat made from? I just love the finish on that guitar...beautiful
@SIRONEDRAGON Thanks Ken, means a lot to me coming from such a good and passionate musician like you, we can call each other distant friends that's for sure, greetings Vic.
@NAUDORDS Thanks Naudo, I when I composed this I was thinking on several things: The feeling of the Blues, lovely Funk rhythm and sophistication of the Jazz, brother I think that's a good marriage,LOL,abrazo,Vic.
I've listened to this over and over. By reading the comments I see that is common for others listening to it as well. I don't think a challenging piece of work can be absorbed in just one sitting. You bring something to this that is rich in harmony and depth. Love it when you go outside and then come back into the funk. Controlled freedom. Don't know what more to say. So very good.
@archtopbrownie Thanks Lance, all my Cool Tube friends visited me on this one, I kinda like how this one came out. It's fantastic that you've listened 3 times in a row. All I can say is that it triggers other musicians Imagination and I'm very glad with that. I think John Scofield named this particular scale Symmetric diminished half-whole tone. I learned it as Octotonic,ah what the hell, what's in a name,it's the sound and creativity that matters, thanks again,Vic.
Well Victor, I listened to this 3 times in a row, and I can very clearly imagine Fagen's vocals on this piece; I have to email him again. It's a superb composition with a funky upbeat rhythm and sound that creates a cool atmosphere and vibe. Your original compositions are the best! Faved and featured. Thanks for sharing with us, my friend. Regards, Jeff
@SqwishTV Thanks Jeff, for always writing these uplifting and thoughtful comments, you definitely have great musical taste,I'm honored you favored me again Amigo,Vic.
Fine playing, Amigo! Has a cosmopolitan, earthy, jazzy blues sound that that particular guitar your playing has the perfect associated sound to produce. I love the symmetric octotonic scale myself. It's great to use over "circle of 5ths" chord progressions as it introduces the altered tones in an exciting way. It's also fun to use over a normal m7 chord using the "off tones" as lead-in pitches to resolve on the "proper" notes of the chord. Tension & release!
@DieselBodine Thanks Scott, great comment, for such friends I remain on YT, you in the moment analyze what you're hearing and that quality is not given to every one, only to the guys who have really done their homework, lol. I've been experimenting with what you mention using it over mi7 chords, also an interesting sound,I remember you doing a Video on this concept, interesting.Another interesting remark is the Earthy Blues sound,as a Taurus I'm rooted in the Earth but my intellect seeks expansion.
Hi Vic, now this is some special stuff to your listeners;-) And well done! Never had the idea to call it "octotonic" (half/whole tone and whole/half tone scale), thank you, good name, I didn´t know that name.
Your solo is very clever, as you play the outside stuff and the bluesy lines. That´s the right deal, mixing both worlds.
And: once again it´s an original, -- I like originals;-)
@FrankRMusic Thanks Frank, gladly given my friend, I'll tell you a story: I had lessons from my former teacher,he was a self made man and not talkative,he would just sit and play,so I took a little recorder along to record the lessons, I asked hey can you tell me the name of that interesting sound, the scale or something? He looked at me and said: Listen to Coltrane. That was it. So I bought this book called" Thesaurus of Scales by Slonimsky. The next lesson I said the scale's name is Octotonic.
@Jazzguts Nice story, Vic, yes, listen to Coltrane, good advice. Funny, when I was in my late teen, I bought LP´s of Pass, Peterson (piano), Coltrane, Miles, Getz ...not the guitarist, more the solo Jazz greats on other instruments. And that´s what I still prefer - though I´m a guitarist;-)
My wow-effect was the" Leigh Powers scale book for guitar and any melody instrument" in 1979. It helped me to understand the idea of scales when I was a little younger;-))
good to see you... I like the cool sound and the my feet can't stand steel... Really a groovy performance and of course fantastic playing my friend!!! I really enjoy listening to you!!! Hug Sarah :-)
@sguitar Thanks Sarah, glad you enjoyed my little composition " Orleans Funk" Sabine asked if I ever went to New Orleans, well I know some darn good Music came from there like: Dr John the Night tripper, and the legendary " The Meters" (great Funk) check them out, New Orleans is high on my priority list (even though it was heavily struck by Hurricane Catrina some years ago). hug Vic.
Very inventive note selection and a great groove. I wonder if the "octonic" has anything to do with "October" both having an eighth root in it? Just kidding. Very nice original arrangement, showing off your versitality in inventive compositions too.
@sunriverperson Thanks Rich,ha ha nice little joke, it's a very interesting scale used effectively by many in the Jazz world, Coltrane, Michael Brecker, many interesting combinations can be made with it,have a great weekend and thanks for your visit,Vic.
Hi Vic, Man this tune using the Octotonic Scale really sounds funky in your playing. It's a whole different approach then the Major & Minor scales which contain seven different notes whereas the Octotonic uses eight with a whole-step, half-step pattern wile many might think this sounds spooky. I have been studying this scale a wile also named eight tone or octatonic scale wasn't really easy but assume once dominated you can make some really interesting
@JAZZFLEX09 Thanks John for your fine reaction, much appreciated. I didn't know you studied this scale as well anyway it has great potential as an altered scale,I love it, my former teacher at the Utrecht conservatory was a master in this scale, his playing was full of tension and release in those days I took a little tape recorder to the lessons and recorded what he was doing, he was a self made man and didn't know the name of the scale,he only told me that Coltrane used it, great scale,Vic.
@dieWeiseBanane The feet react to Groove, a dancing rhythm, once a friend said to me: Vic you can play the most complex Stuff once the Groove is appealing,I guess he was right, Miles Davis knew this secret like no one else. Sabine I've read a great deal about New Orleans and it's very high on my priority list to visit there, even though it was devastated by Catrina (Hurricane), a hurricane won't take the Music out of the people, that's for sure,Vic.
@dieWeiseBanane Now there's a creative comment, with the greatest compliment a musician can achieve, heavy Stuff made comprehensible ,not totally but you know what I mean. Time for expansion, time for thoughts I'd say,Vic.
Mr. V. Kampen, this is brilliant! It should be a hit around the world! Octotonic!? WHAT? :) Never hear of. But, then again, it's not used in classical music... I guess...'
@AndanteLargo Now this is interesting monsieur Per, A lecture on Octotonic: Maybe you know diminished? Well take C Eb Gb A and place a leading note in-front each tone B-C D-Eb F-Gb Ab- A voila eight notes in the scale, and studying this scale in depth brings us to countless melodic possibilities, by the way who says it cant be used in Classical? Didn't Debussy use the whole tone scale, another very interesting devision of the octave. abrazo Vic. (PS. No hit, too much use of the grey cells) Vic.
The theme has a fun groove. Nice hook. Another master class in improvisation.
I like the tension in your improv. I have listened to this a few times and I hear something new each time. Normally blues bores me pretty quick. This keeps my interest. It's hard for me to think of this as blues. Whatever it's called it's good.
@carvetop01 Allen when one starts betraying the world of countless possibilities it might seem overwhelming but the discipline is still to focus on ONE thing till it's fully memorized (while knowing there's so much more out there) When reading your comment I get the feeling you're looking at an abstract painting, every time you look at it,it reveals something else. Slowly I'm starting to achieve my objective, abrazo Amigo Vic.
@carvetop01 Allen,Reading your comment again I think maybe I shouldn't call it Blues, only the solo on the G7 vamp maybe but the rest is getting quite abstract, you're right in that perspective, now I don't know what to name it, LOL,greetings Vic.
