Great vid, tragic, but rock and roll folklore right there. From what I have heard Keith did not know ithe drugs were animal tranqs thought they were something else. I believe it was possibly ketamine which is used to sedate horses. I have taken animal grade ketamine before and literally watched the whole party, including myself, from a corner of the roof. Thinking about it now very scary stuff, fun at the time though. RIP Keith.
I worked at so many Cow Palace shows. For some reason, it was always a rowdy venue. Industrial district.... Ozzy had to flee the stage due to fans throwing bottles and such. Looks like the vibe of the place got ol' Keith crazy. Looked like one of us wrestling with a typical out of control fan. Ironic to see a band member become like unto a bad fan!
that's a dream come true for any amateur musician. i daydream about that. if john entwhistle went down."can anybody play the bass?" i don't know if would have had the balls. i would have been too messed up anyway. top three rock drummers in no particular order 1) keith moon 2) jon bonham. who's three?
@MrNategriffin IMHO you've got it a bit off. 1 of all time has to be Ginger Baker as he was incredible and got the entire drum solo style going with his 20 minute solos with Cream. Next, Bonham probably. But there is Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Deep Purple and so many others before you even exit the 60s. I would put Keith Moon in the top ten though.
Also, what courage to come up on the stage, and play THE drum set that Moon played. It is hard to believe the Who had no drum tech, roadie, etc. at this tour who could have played, but makes for one of THE greatest moments in rock history.
One can only imagine the sheer panache of an amateur playing with one of the all-time great bands, The Who, plus to fill in for Keith Moon, my goodness, what an honor!
I came across Keith Moon when I was reading Graham Chapman's book, who was a very close friend of his, and Keith WAS on the road to recovery. He just went too far and apparently swallowed 32 pills which he took with alcohol. (Well that's what I read. I'm not really sure.) He was a great musician :/
I was at this show. I was sitting on the side and could not see Keith. Both times he collapsed The band finished the song they were on. The first time we didn't know what was happening, (the drums just stopped) until the song was over. When they came back the first time Keith didn't make it through the next song.
I thought the story was not so much that he had taken an animal tranquilizer as that somebody had slipped one in his drink or something. But I am not sure, really.
@briteness According to Pete, someone told Keith, "If you take half of this elephant tranquilizer, you'll get a good buzz." Keith's response was, "Half of one? I'm Keith Moon!" GULP!
I was at the concert. They tried to set up the Cow Palace for quadrophonic sound, so they had amp stacks in the balcony, and I was sitting too near one stack. The result was as tragic as Moon's performance. I heard nothing but a tuneless dirge blasting from the amps and ended up leaving early. Too bad. I'd heard they were great in concert. I would have liked to HEAR them.
@satweavers Bad luck mate, it sucks ending up next to one of them, had a similar problem at a festival recently, must of had 5000 watts of bass guitar and drums pummeling me.
I've heard from people who had friends at this concert. It was really cooled to watch the kid play. I wish there was more of it.
I saw the Who in Dallas in 71 and Roger Daltry was swinging his mike like he does and hit John Entwhestle on the head. He was stunned, Daltry was concerned and he kept playing.
Feel bad for kids today who have to settle for Vegas style choreographed lip sync contrived pretty faces rather than substance by real artists who write and perform their music.
i completely agree with u, but thankfully i am raised in a houshold that showd me real music. i saw roger preform the tommy albam this past october, and he was AMAZING. and i listen to quadrafenia on our record player. if u want, go to my channel, cause i have 5 vids from the concert
Keith Moon without a doubt influenced many young drummers that grew up in the 60's and 70's,I was one of them. His style of playing gave me a vision of putting in fills and rolls and off beats where they normally would not be.To this day I still incorporate some of his style into my playing.Influences come from many styles and drummers and as we individually combine the styles together unique styles are created to influence someone else. Thus that is why we have the Pearts the Portnoys and so on
Thanks for the upload! I was at the show! In fact I was 2nd in line the morning of November 19. I remember it well! Lynyrd Skynyrd opened. I was at the front of the stage, and had a fallout shelter symbol on the back of my green army jacket. Keith was able to get through "Bell Boy", then something was wrong and Keith's head is bouncing on his snare drum. Then, the people's band my idols were, Pete pulls Scott Halpin out of the crowd to finish the set. A truly history making moment in rock!
Keith Moon definitely left his mark in the history of rock music ,without a doubt ,because of his musicianship (he actually served the song ) and also his outrageous antics. However I always feel that Moonie became trapped in the role of 'the clown' and that he was sad in his spirit.I believe that he became more and more stressed -out as he tried to maintain this image to the world .
Thanks sooooo much for posting this - I have read about this show in various places - but I have never seen the footage before...big smile here - any new (to me) footage of the golden era of rock is awesome- but of my favorite of all favorites - Keith - I needed a smile today and this did it!

All the cool rock stories go out the fuckin window when you see this shit. These dudes were an inspiration to me like millions of others & it kills me to see this.....the man was dying before the worlds eyes.Something could have been done to maybe, just maybe deter the bad behavior.

@41CLA what do you mean no?there is a picture of it proving it.it shows them having dinner together that night.after seeing the buddy holly story movie.
@jayfey77' the last man keith saw before he died was paul mccartney', everything you say is correct except that statement. surely he wasn't the last man to see keith alive? what about how keith got home? taxi? someone must have driven him. what about in his hotel or whatever, no door men? nobody around?
(i'm reading too much into it sorry. you were right, i'm just being picky)
Wow that guy has/had a story to tell for the rest of his lifetime. I hope the who sent him some money or something else to say thanks. That would be a dream come true to play drums for the who at that time. More bands should let ppl from the crowd jam with them.

He was a nut...and an immense talent and influence who did far more in his life than most who live far longer.
Why are there so many likes on this video? It is kind of funny until you realize this kind of stuff is what killed him in the end. Then, it's just sad. RIP, Keith.
This isn't the way it happened in the Cow Palace in 1974. He passed out between the second and third songs. Pete said 'He's got a bit of an upset stomach. He might be back, and he might not.'. @jhenager His name was Scot Halpin, who afterwards became a professional drummer and composer. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 54. @jhenager No, that is not the way it happened. First of all, the concert was in 1973 at the Cow Palace in S.F., not 1974. The Who were about 70 minutes into their concert, not three songs, when Moon first pasted out during "Won't Get Fooled Again." Pete made some comments to the audience and Moon revived enough from his near fatal overdose on horse tranquilizers (Special K) and a bottle of brandy. He then passed out for good during Magic Bus. That is when Halpin came up and made history.
thats what he said, a guy had horse tranquilizers and told the band that 1/2 to 1 gave you a nice buzz, Moon said "i'm fucking keith moon" and took a handfull
