@mazeman90 they shun her partly because she is old, but she was a glamour cat who left the tribe when she was young to explore the outside world. Because of that, they don't accept her as part of the tribe anymore. The two kittens, Jemima and Victoria, are the only ones who accept her and this song at the end of the story is the first time anyone else in the cast sings with her.

So, we're doing Cats at my school, I'm Skimbleshanks, and I've come to the conclusion that the easiest way to win my heart is to sing Jemima's part at 4:43. It's only 6 measures, but the vocals and the orchestration complement each other flawlessly. I'll admit, I hated Cats before I started looking at it in depth. It's not all that bad!

@thecherrimtree12 she was trying to embrace grizzabella! because victoria and jemima are ready to accept her back into the jelicle clan, but the other cats aren't having it!! grizzabella abandoned the clan long ago back and so all the other cats are taking it kind of personally! thats why the other cats wont let the younger cats like victoria and jemima hug or touch grizzabella! does that help..? :)

The trouble with this musical is that the actors/dancers/singers performing in it must be the cream of the crop. It was far easier to obtain those with the necessary talent for this movie than for the musical on Broadway--the actors/dancers/singers didn't sign on for a three-year run, and so a wider selection of people (and thus, talent) was available. I've listened to the original Broadway cast recording, and believe me, it's not nearly as good.

Some people say this ending is a cop out, "oh, she sings song and suddenly they like her again."

Its not like that, if you watch them closely, they slowly turn to look at her, realizing she was once part of their lives and they shared the same happiness. In the end, they're all looking at her, waiting to see who will be the first to approach her. They knew it would be easier to leave her, but they all knew that one of them wouldn't let that happen, they were waiting to see who it would be.

Its a metaphor for her life. If you havent seen the musical before:

Grizabella was once a normal jellicle cat, and had lots of fun and a happy life. This represents the "day" of her life, and is the memories she speaks of. However, she left the tribe long ago to seek fame and fortune, and these dreams are never realized (as evident by her appearance). This, along with her return and shunning by the Jellicles, represents the "night". The light of happiness has set on her life.

Admittedly, this is my 1st time witnessing this song. I had listened to the Original Broadway Recording when I was young...and remember getting words wrong but loving the music and the idea. And now...its beautiful art. Love, mistakes, hurt, regret and forgiveness. Jemima is sweet, I dont care if she's dubbed. So powerful that I couldn't help but cry. One thing I find interesting about this musical is there is character development

with every character just through the facial expressions and body movements of each character, even the ones who dont have their own songs and are just dancers. It takes real genuis to develop characters in this way.

But the advantage with a film companion is that certain camera angles can catch many significant details that would otherwise be missed in a live theatre production, depending on where the audience is seated. So with this video, we can get a better sense of the characters through close-up shots on facial expressions/body movements, etc.
