  • OK once again I see we are arguing over how the deck chairs are positioned...Ok you all argue about it.But while doing so plz find time to put on your life vests. You can have enviorment with out an economy ..you can not however have it the other way ......But as we are all More dependendent on the economy emotionally and as sense of identity ...it is quite clear ..most are gonna die in the decades to come wondering why the ATM does not work ...not about much more thought than that.

  • Gavin Schmidt's colleague John Christy stated that even if we build 1000 nuclear power plants by 2020, the net effect on global temps by 2100 will be a reduction of 0.07C below the UN's A1b scenario....

    Any thoughts?

  • It is a mistake to link glacial melting to global warming. Mt. Kilimanjaro is a prime example - it's not warming at all. The change is due to deforestation at the bottom of the mountain causing a loss of the moisture which cuased the snow. There are too many variables that have not been looked at and they need to do so on a case by case basis.

  • @4TIMESAYEAR Deforestation IS a factor in global warming. Loss of vegetative matter, especially forests, alters local environments. What is on the ground affects what is in the atmosphere. Global warming, like Big bang, isn't just a catchy name that entirely describes what is going on there is actually a lot more to it than that.

  • But that deforestation is caused by man on the local scale (people from the next down cut them down), while blaming that on Global Warming would suggest that deforestation was caused by CO2 or warming do to it's feedback effects.

  • That "local" scale we are talking about consists of thousands of miles of clearcut land, much of which turns into desert.

The South American rainforests are a prime example of desertification from humans. One can look at the globe and see the enormous browning spot like a growing cancer stemming from Brazil as forest is cut down.

Plants on land and in water that could have helped take out of the atmosphere some of the CO2 that humans emit, now gone. You seem to confuse things no one is saying.

  • Perhaps I do, but UAH data made manually from 46 stations show that the warming around Mt. Kilimanjaro is only about 0.02 degrees per decade.

If the cause of the melting is do to more local things like deforestation or such, then that change can only be attributed to direct man-made causes that are not affected by Global Warming.

  • @Finlandcitizen Melting can only come from warming temperatures.

I don't know what you are babbling about beyond this. Deforestation does not cause melting of snow and ice (logic). The amount of moisture in the atmosphere (or tree cover) does not cause structural change of the water molecule, rather temperature and pressure gradients do.

Your loop jumping to deny proven facts (like global warming) is pathetic and ridiculous.

  • Of course they melt in heat, but it is more complex with glaciers. I now hardly any glacier or ice sheet wich doesn't melt a bit during summer. Let it be Kilimanjaro or Greenland ice sheet, they all melt a bit during the summer. You can reduce a glacier by two ways: Warming the summer melt (wich can be also caused by differing wind conditions or reducing increasing factors of ice (such as winter cold or general snow fall).

UAH data proves that Kilimanjaro hasn't warmed.

  • @watercup123456 - "Melting can only come from warming temperatures."

That Kilimanjaro has not warmed is a fact. Google the articles "Don't Blame Kilimanjaro's Glacier Loss On Global Warming" and "Deforestation behind loss of Mt Kili snow"

By the way, Kilimanjaro is just another example of how the "warming" isn't "global". The lower 48 states can verify that it isn't either - and the "global average temperature" will not melt ice anywhere it's below freezing.

  • I like the fact that only the slides are shown. This allows for better resollution of the images which also aids learning.
