I wouldn't recommend a bloodhound as a family pet. Reuben is pretty much a one person dog and that person is my ex-wife. I knew a guy who had a bloodhound several years ago and he said the same thing, but the dog chose him over everybody else. It is true about the drool flinging. I swear that Reuben can fling his drool and hit whatever he is aiming at.

I have a bloodhound puppy and she's hands down the best dog I have ever owned.Also some bloodhounds are aggressive.Very few are but the ones that are you gotta watch out.The rest of them are extremely kind hearted,clumsy,extremely smart,stubborn,and very lovable.They are handfuls though and will put just about anything in their mouth that they think smells good.So you gotta watch them!
They have the best noses and can be great for tracking anything, but they're not agressive dogs, so they'll lead you to the game, but they probably won't help you kill it.
I heard police used to use them for tracking criminals, but had to stop and use other dogs like the German Shepherd, because, while the Bloodhound had a better nose, they wouldn't hold the criminal or attack them. THey'd just wag their tails and lick their face LOL

I have witnessed this with my own Bloodhound after the tragic end to a search. Be careful and be advised as to what the breed is capable of. @TheAdrenalineEffect I know they're great hunting dogs and would probably be good for tracking down big game, but I don't know about actually bringing the animal down. I really don't know, but they're great for smaller stuff such as deer and fox.
@tmacguy I have two cats (plus a newborn kitten) and a bloodhound and Basset. My cats like my Basset better because (I think) that she is not as intimidating. HOWEVER, when the cats run, both dogs scramble after them, much to the cats dismay. They do let the Basset close, but if the Bloodhound even looks in the momma cats direction she chases him clear across the house. It is rather entertaining tho - a three pound cat chasing that 100 pound dog. LOL

My grandparents have a Bloodhound and he's my favorite dog of all my family's pets! It's such a shame though because I have a kind of phobia with spit in all it's forms (I can't even stand to kiss that often). So my grandparents have to clean him up before I can play with him, and I might only get 10 minutes (or less) before he's all globby again! But he's so sweet and I hide things all over the house for him to find when I visit them.
Something very appealing to this breed. Not the most intelligent dog -people say- but who said that intelligence is the most important thing anyway...

We just got two bloodhounds from a woman that couldn't take care of them. And it was obvious. Poor things are skin and bone; covered in fleas and ticks. But we've bathed them; got rid of the ticks, and are working on improving their eating habits. They'll be a healthy weight soon enough =3 And they're very sweet dogs!
We have a rescue Bloodhound, Miley, and she is a pain. Don't get me wrong I do love her but I can't say the feeling is mutual. Theres an old myth that the white spot on the Bloodhound chest is where the devil went in. Miley has a BIG white spot.
Trusty! love the character in lady and the tramp especially when he tells his old reliable story. When i first saw the movie i almost started crying because i thought he was dead. Love this breed and trusty who actually represents the breed really well lol.
I reckomend Bloodhounds for anything they are good Guard dogs, Protective, good with kids, hunting dogs, vacational dogs. @devonbrahm Ahh, hell yeah. We got a blood hound for a County Police Department, but we don't use her for hunting, but they are good bird dogs. I think that labs would be better though.
@devonbrahm I don't believe they would. I own a bloodhound, and I can't keep her nose off the ground. For a bird dog, you would need a pointer. I recommend an Irish Setter. If you want a tracker though, a bloodhound is perfect.

i used to have a bloodhoud and wow i loved tht dog so much but the problem was , was tht we recued him...and well aparently he was visiouse and he ended up biting my sister in the lip and my family is a dog loverrr family so we had a heart of gold to keep him (his name was duke) well a week later he bite me yep we were about to put him down after tht but the vet said in 10 days well he was a good dog soo we dicided not to put him down but then he bite my brother in the same spot he bite me
and my sister but tht time we had to put him down....bloodhouds are known to be great loving powerful dogs but if u dont treat them right they will bite...and it will become a habit but i was still so sad tht we had to put him down i loved him so much and i can sit here and tell u details of what i loved abut him but..yeah...so im, not saying they are bad im basically saying give them lots of love not hate!

I reckomend Bloodhounds for anything they are good Guard dogs, Protective, good with kids, hunting dogs, vacational dogs. They are awesome they are also cute they are awesome family dogs or a single owner too i reckomend them or a german shepherd those are like the same but the bloodhounds bigger and stronger they are smart too so please looking for a dog? german shepherd or bloodhound they are the best!!!!

Bloodhounds are not good guard dogs, but they are great watch dogs. They love you to death, but they are wimps and scare easily.

@devonbrahm Ahh, hell yeah. We got a blood hound for a County Police Department, but we don't use her for hunting, but they are good bird dogs. I think that labs would be better though.

@devonbrahm I don't believe they would. I own a bloodhound, and I can't keep her nose off the ground. For a bird dog, you would need a pointer. I recommend an Irish Setter. If you want a tracker though, a bloodhound is perfect.

one day i was walkin in a forest with my bloodhound we were in there for a while on different trails i stopped to look around for a bit then i said 'lets go home' and my dog led the whole way out of the forest on the exact trails we went in on

I love Bloodhounds!!! i have a 10 month old female black+tan Bloodhound. she is 28 inches tall and wieghs 125 lbs. shes a big girl!!! her names Ginger. her fav thing to do is steal food off the counter!!!shes got biscuits, sandwiches, eggs!!! if u get a Bloodhound anyone, dont leave food on the counter or table!!! they will get it!

labs are nice but have no character. get a bloodhound but be prepared to work! most folks arent so it isnt the breed for them!

i used to have a bloodhoud and wow i loved tht dog so much but the problem was , was tht we recued him...and well aparently he was visiouse and he ended up biting my sister in the lip and my family is a dog loverrr family so we had a heart of gold to keep him (his name was duke) well a week later he bite me yep we were about to put him down after tht but the vet said in 10 days well he was a good dog soo we dicided not to put him down but then he bite my brother in the same spot he bite me

and my sister but tht time we had to put him down....bloodhouds are known to be great loving powerful dogs but if u dont treat them right they will bite...and it will become a habit but i was still so sad tht we had to put him down i loved him so much and i can sit here and tell u details of what i loved abut him but..yeah...so im, not saying they are bad im basically saying give them lots of love not hate!
