What Derren is doing here is he is giving this guy the "Hypnotic Stare" which basicly means that you "Look through" the person, pretending that they arent there. The next thing Derren does is he goes intop a trance like state himself. You'll notice that his face is very relaxed and he seems to by hypnotized. That actually puts the guy into a state of hypnosis, now more then likely the induction that Derren performed was editted out.

@MagicMaddy He doesn't just look through the guy, but looks at one eye and then the other back and forth which often times creates a confused or suggestible state. Of course, non of these things are working alone, but in context with many other suggestions going on. In other words, Derren truly is the Anti-Christ!

not fake. this is very highly possible and I've read a lot of Derren Brown and studied this technique of NLP myself, and I have been able to hypnotize someone to not see me, so there's no doubt this could work in NLP as well. and as far as I can see in the video he does everything right, so i don't see why it should be fake. listen how he subtly shoves the direct command "and you simply don't see me" into his sentence at 01:22 ;D

By toutching them he makes a connection between them, getting there full attention. It also puts darren in a state of control as he is holding his wrist, as a parent may do to a child. As he leaves he gives the comand "You simply dont see me" leaving that to play on his mind why darren gets dressed up. If you make eye contact with someone try not to look at his eyes but through his eyes, you know , fuzzy ! Look up Rasputin to see how his eyes look! He did not look at a person he looked through a person , what happens is people will make more eye contact with you if you don't look in their eyes but beyond so the information will be sent with more ease to them being more influential (NLP)

So to give information to the other person (making him belive anything) you must use 4 senses (taste is excluded obviously) effectively ! If you know a bit about hypnosis, then you know that hypnosis works in all kind of levels.

A person that tends to be more suggestible can reach a level that he don't see the person or thing in front of him although it still there.

It's not so amazing once you see it happens with other "victims" and with other hypnotists.

I myself saw something that isn't there and also the opposite, so it's possible and it's even not one of his big sequences.

Then, at 1:22, he very sneakily and subtlety says "you simply can't see me", implanting the suggestion. When he comes back out, notice that none of him is exposed and the film student simply can't see him. Because of the way Darren asserted that same sentiment, the film student now believes it to be true in his trance state, and as Darren slowly reveals himself the student continues to not see him.

In hypnosis the suggestibility of a person help a lot to accept the inducted commands. In this case the person doesn't see Derren, although he is standing there. he sees things moving with no one touching them. I have been hypnotized couple of times and in one of the sessions, I didn't see the hypnotist only could hear him.
