I live not ten minutes away from her birthplace, 1 Bank Terrace, a modest end terraced house in Higher Walton, Lancashire, it has a lovely plaque on the wall with the comment that her voice gave pleasure to millions, a little further up the road is her memorial garden, each time I pass either a tear comes to my eye, Klever Kaff gave us a wealth of beautiful music, I remember when she sang for Sir Thomas Beecham and after her performance turned to him and said 'Was that alright love'?, RIP .
@zeppelinRULES44 Any relation?? Lucky you, just to have the same name as this very great artist, cut from life which she so loved, her life of music-making, by breast cancer that little by little insidiously took her from us.
This is some of the most sublime signing I ever hope to hear, captured in superb sound; what a shame you cut it off before the song finished! Is there any way you can share the entire song? it's not really that long, you know.
The pictures are nice and the voice is very nice. The song is also nice, but the fact that it gets clipped off in this video is a disappointment. I suggest you redo this video and either add more pictures, or slow down the picture changing rate and include the whole song.
@Pacabelle Agreed, and one of the greatest voices of the 20th (and probably any) century. Check out her "Agnus Dei" (Bach's B minor Mass) and be sitting when you put it on!
So proud to hear this Irish song dedicated to the great Kathleen Ferrier.May her great talent remain evergreen in our memories. Thanks for posting.....
how nice to hear a voice so well suited to this lovely song from the poem by W.B. Yeats.
I wonder did she ever sing another Irish song called "Kilkeel"Up in the mountains looking o'er the sea, thats where you'll find me,above Kilkeel.Lovely ballad of the Mountains of Mourne..here in Ireland.
The man in glasses who walks beside her in the street, smiling, is the Danish tenor Aksel Schiotz. They sang a lot together. But his career was spoilt by a brain tumour! The accompanist Gerald Moore (the plump smiling man in one of the photos) said that he was one of 2 tenors he had ever met who didn´t talk about himself all the time! (I wonder who the other one was?) Does anyone have a video with him?
Lathleen Ferrier will never be forgotten. How sad it was that she got cancer of the throat as such a young age. Thank you for sharing her music with us. I love her too.
I thought she was diagnosed with breast cancer (not throat cancer?) which then underwent metastasis and affected her bones. In her last on stage performance, Orfeo, before her death her leg actually broke and she was carried out on a stretcher. To her great professionalism and credit she finished the performance. She must have suffered agony!
As far as I know the only existing film with her is a silent short film where she sings and plays the piano in a funny song. She started as a pianist (as a very young person) and used to clown about at the piano, accompanying herself. (a bit hard to believe, isn´t it?) Someone put sound to this film. A home audio-recording with her singing a hilarious song!
Cancer of the throat, what terrible thing to happen to the greatest singer ever. I'm still hoping to find a Contralto her equal. I have all her records, many of the songs reduce me to a tear-sodden wreck and I count myself as man not given to showing emotion.
There are several books about Ferrier (one by her sister, Winifred, published by Hamish Hamilton Press in England in 1955, another a series of portraits of her by those who knew her (Benjamin Britten among them), and there are a number of remastered CDs of her singing. One is Decca "The World of Kathleen Ferrier" is its title, with a melange of songs (folksongs, standards, some lieder, ending poignantly with Mahler's Um Mitternacht. Decca 430 096-2.
que hermoso y grato momento, una voz realmente bella, profunda.. sin lugar a dudas la mejor contralto de la historia!, bella, diva y unica grande Kathleen Ferrier!!
I'd love to acquire this DVD. Any more info about it? Also, FYI there's a DVD of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson doing Handel's Theodora.
And finally, there are several old books about Kathleen Ferrier. One, by her sister Winnifred, published in 1955 in England by Hamish Hamilton......another a series of single chapters about her as remembered by others (Britten, etc.). There are a number of remastered CDs of her singing, as well.
I agree. How sad. It breaks my heart. Lorraine was even more communicative because her technique was so great and you could understand every single word. I love her.

57 years ago our Primary School Deputy Headteacher, Mrs King, told us that we would never hear a voice like this again - she was right!

Does anyone know: Did Kathleen Ferrier ever record Edward Elgar's Sea Pictures? It seems like such a perfect match for her voice.

Very nice - but with a sudden end. A longer period on each picture and a fade out at the end of the piece would make it perfect!

Her voice is unique. Deep, but full of light. And she was so beautiful. Why not the entire song? Thxs a lot.

As a third generation KF fan it's good to know that there are still so many followers fifty years on, wonder what she would have made of Youtube?
