A cute song showcasing one side of Mccartney's musical personality. I maintain, however, it is a fish out of water on the Back to the Egg album. Being what it is and last on the song selection reveals they had as much trouble fitting it in as I do. One can say this about alot of Paul's songs (She's Leaving Home, Sally G.). Cross-capability was (one of his) massive strengths. But Wings was a light Rock band, and this kinda stuff belonged on B-sides.
one of many "all-time-favourites" - can't stop whisteling it all day whenever I hear it! And there's not a single cut in this video I guess? They got it all in one take! great
Dance hall and nightclub music were Paul's first musical loves from his childhood and his dad Jim's jazz piano playing.
He had planned on composing these types of tunes for the likes of Sinatra, but rock and roll came along, and the rest is history...
One of "Back To The Egg's" highlights, from Laurence Juber's jazzy opening on an electric archtop, through Paul's smooth lead vocal and Linda and Denny's harmonies, Tony Dorsey's trombone solo and a classic finish, it's sweet !
Bill Black's stand-up bass is today owned by ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, who received the instrument as a birthday present from his late wife Linda McCartney in the late 1970s. The bass can be seen in the video clip to McCartney's song "Baby's Request". In the documentary film, The World Tonight, McCartney can be seen playing the bass and singing his version of "Heartbreak Hotel".
I like this song (maybe even a lot) but was this video really necessary? Wasn't there also an 80's McCartney vid with a pointless military theme? Pipes of Peace, maybe?
This song was my first love, at the age of about 5 or 6. Does or did anybody else have an absolute adoration of this song? Many of Paul's minor album tracks (minor in key as well as popularity) are often his best, e.g. "Letting Go" on Venus and Mars, which is strangely never talked about as being among his best most energetic songs, or the divine "Don't let it bring you down" on London Town.
@thesubtleface Where did you come up with your "divine" lyrics to "London Town?" The lyrics are: "Silver rain was falling down, upon the dirty ground of London Town."
@03201952shy My comment was about a song on the album, not the title track, and I did not mention lyrics. Paul is notoriously not primarily a lyricist. I believe in the feel of a song, which transcends both melody (still very important) and lyrics (decidedly less so).
The bonus track of this on Kisses on the Bottom made me discover this. It's a real gem, I don't know which version is best. Both are great.

The Pipes of Peace video wasn't pointless at all... It actually had a good meaning.

This is a perfect song - the quality of Paul's voice, the lyrics, the words, the production.
One of Paul's great "old time" songs - same ilk as When I'm sixty-four, Honey pie, You gave me the answer, Your mother should know, English tea...

the beginning of this song sounds like Paul McCartney's unreleased song Suicide which is really good by the way...
