I crewed for Blackie for several years in the 70's. We raced IMCA mostly dirt tracks in WI. MN. and MO. We were only three and so poor that sometimes we slept in the pickup. With inferior equipment Blackie would typically finish behind the big dogs of the day, Ernie Derr and Ramo Scott. Broke and exhausted Blackie tought me the true meaning of determination. Go hard no matter what. He was always fast, bull headed, and controversial. I miss you, Patrick
This was probably recorded back in 1999 when ESPN Classic did "Daytona Week". They showed two hour versions of '79, '80, '81, '84, '85, '88, '90, and '91.
do you have any more videos from the '81 500 its really interesting to watch it esp since it was the first race with the smaller 110 inch wheelbase cars, kind of a car of tomorrow for them
No. This is the only footage I have from that race. It was recorded from ESPN classic on the night before Dale Earnhardt died. I was flipping channels when Suddenly I realized it was the 81 500. I always wanted to get this race on tape so I fumbled for a tape, got it into the VCR an pressed record and this is all the footage I got. Luckily, it's the footage I was looking for.
GEEZ the guys do it in under 15 seconds now

Blackie took some wild rides. If I remember reading correctly, he flew over the wall at Michigan two years before.

Yes, he did go over a wall but I can't remember which track it was at. He almost died in that crash!

It's funny as hell the way he says well be back.

I agree! I haven't seen him in about 5 years but he always had a great sense of humor!

Thanks for posting. This is great stuff!
The '81 was always one of my favorite D500s also. I wouldn't have even remembered Blackie Wangerin was in that race though.
I never got to see this on ESPN Classics.
LOVE Harry Ranier's '81 Lemans. What model was Blackie driving?
