  • The '81 race was a great Daytiona 500. Blackie was a cool dude!

  • I haven't talked to him for a few years but he still IS a cool dude!

  • @3338MAN TYPO DAYTONA!

  • do you have the rest of this race? this was one of my favorites!

  • I bet.

  • Yay another Minnesotan in NASCAR!!! YAY!!!

  • Blackie took some wild rides. If I remember reading correctly, he flew over the wall at Michigan two years before.

  • Yes, he did go over a wall but I can't remember which track it was at. He almost died in that crash!

  • I agree! I haven't seen him in about 5 years but he always had a great sense of humor!

  • There is a once in a blue moon driver in the CTS named Troy Wangerin, is there a relation? cuz I cannot imagine to many Wangerins in NASCAR lol

  • Yes, Blackie is Troy's dad.

  • Awesome, thanks for tellin me.

  • Thanks for posting. This is great stuff!

The '81 was always one of my favorite D500s also. I wouldn't have even remembered Blackie Wangerin was in that race though.

I never got to see this on ESPN Classics.

LOVE Harry Ranier's '81 Lemans. What model was Blackie driving?

  • This was probably recorded back in 1999 when ESPN Classic did "Daytona Week". They showed two hour versions of '79, '80, '81, '84, '85, '88, '90, and '91.

  • nvm, missed the previous comment.

  • do you have any more videos from the '81 500 its really interesting to watch it esp since it was the first race with the smaller 110 inch wheelbase cars, kind of a car of tomorrow for them

  • No. This is the only footage I have from that race. It was recorded from ESPN classic on the night before Dale Earnhardt died. I was flipping channels when Suddenly I realized it was the 81 500. I always wanted to get this race on tape so I fumbled for a tape, got it into the VCR an pressed record and this is all the footage I got. Luckily, it's the footage I was looking for.

  • Hmm, I've always wondered what Blackie Wangerin looked like. Thanks for posting!
