@h1smadness Nein, dumme Leute machen dumme Kommentare. Lies mal die Info, es geht nur um die Teilnahme an der World Solar Challenge. Nebenbei gesagt, das Teil hat in seiner Kategorie gewonen. Kann also nicht wirklich braun sein!
Just rent a damn car when you're planning longer trips. It's less money than buying this proprietary thing, makes less noise pollution, produces less smog and won't be holding up traffic.
@OpCzar You haven's read the description. Purpose of this combination was the Greenfleet category at the World Solar Challenge in Australia. And btw. it has won in its category!
The gasoline engine is ridiculous. If it is indeed a two-stroke then it pretty much pollutes just as much as a Trabant. It would have been nice to engineer a generator that runs on bio-diesel, that way, pollutions levels would have been reduced and there wouldn't be the inefficiency of a fifth wheel on the Twike.
I can't believe he pulled up to a gas Station with a TWIKE and put gas in it! Stupid. That thing is Anti Gas! If you want extended range make an electric powered pusher and then quadruple the battery capacity and it will go 3 times further. No Gas needed!
Great Idea!A guy could use homemade Bio Diesel with a small diesel engine on the range extender. How fast is it with the range extender?Does it charge the batteries when the gas engine is running?
I think it could only charge the battery through recuperation via the wheels/street(if the twike has that at all) wich would not be as efficient as if the ICE would be aligned directly with a electric generator.
But that would be a little more wheight and you would need a clutch to use it at will.
This concept is not like the known range extenders wich can only produce electricity from a rotation, transfering it throug a wire to the electric engine, where it is used to create a rotation again.
Part 2: This method, to bring the rotation directly to the street rather than converting it two times, is more efficent, but you can not drive hundreds of km without recharging the batteries & still having the ability to drive without noise through the city or having the extra boost to pass a lame farmer.
That could only be possible with a serial hybrid, wich can be run with gas.
The charging through recuperation is not as efficent as a generator on the axle, but that would only make sense
Part 3: with a clutch wich both would mean more weight & higher cost & complexity.
But in future it is an option.
And maybe the recuperation is efficent enough that it is already a good way to recharge the batteries if the driver tells his car that he needs a full battery even if it means more fuel-consumption & would be not good for the environment.
At all it would be much better to have battery-swap-points where a system takes your empty battery out of the car & replaces it with a full one.
My apologies. I indeed hadn't see the justification for putting the outboard motor on. Of course I encourage participants of the Greenfleet category at the World Solar Challenge.
Yet I still basically think I have a point: Seeing a Twike with a 2-tact combustion engine is just weird to say the least :) I was immediately taken a back.
I have no better idea: The simple fact is that humanity has increasingly high demands on mobility and this is hard to realise with zero-footprint...
the range extender does not take away from the TWike. It merely makes it a more flexible/pratical vehicle for a broader range of transportation needs and conditions. The electric motors and batteries continue to be available.
the range extender maintains it original environmental integrity, and at the same time makes the TWike a more flexible/practical vehicle for a broader range of transportation needs and conditions.
Why not put a small diesel generator in a trailer. Then you can run the motor at its optimum speed and not have to worry about traction issues.

So that's how you turn something green... into something brown!!!!!!

@DeLorean4 it's a for stroke engine run on bio fuel. The twike is a three wheeler, therefore the range extender is the fourth wheel.

I think this addition defeats the object.
If your going to run a motor you could get better mileage if you take out the heavy electric motor and batteries!
Therefore it should just be a human/electric vehicle in my opinion.

@STUCASHX Ya right buddy, the original idea is lost. What sense does it make to have a dirt spilling motor on a clean vehicle? :-((

By the way this Twike has cool 'gullwing' doors which the normal Twikes don't have. Looks much more practical to me

My opinion is that this solution is not good.
It goes completely against the purpose and philosophy of the TWIKE, namely to be an environmental friendly and silent mode of transportation.
(Kindly do not delete this comment).

This a cool idea, although it does compromise a bit on the idea of the Twike as a silent and environmentally friendly vehicle.
