Cry of Love, with Kelly on vocals, should have dominated the 90s. "Brother" is a classic. This live video is spectacular. Audley manhandles the Strat.
in 1993 I turned 21, opened for Paul Rodgers, Bought my 1st BRAND NEW CAR. This band CRY OF LOVE was the BEST thing going. This song will ALWAYS remind me of getting out on I-44 in my Berretta Gt andcranking the radio up.
great girl named deb ford introduced me to this group on the early 90s.seen them i think it was either ft myers beach or it was in naples ....i was 21 at the time can remeber..l.ol........ and they toured with zztop great shows and great times thanks deb!
This is as close to your God as you're gonna get! They wipe the floor with nearly every rock band Ive ever heard and definitely at the top of the list of Blues rockin' bands. Tight arrangements, over the too vox and rhythm section.. then there us Audley Freed. Nuff said
This was, and is one of my favourite albums of all time. Almost criminal that there is no more from Cry Of Love, but at least they gave us Brother. I`m a drummer by trade so for me to say the guitar tone is sex is sayin` somethin` !!!
What a shame this band is not together any more. Saw them in Peoria on the Brother tour and was blown away. I was and still am blown away by their first album. It's the one CD that still finds it's way to my CD player regularly.
The kids that played at last years Glastonbury garbage should watch this and see how it should be done. Audley the man with the golden tone! Probably the coolest band to ever use the "love" word.
I saw these guys with my wife in Myrtle Beach a long time ago. I have never forgotten them, I share this music with any one that will listen to it. Right on comment about the closest thing to Paul Rogers we will ever get and in few ways even better. What a soul in that voice. If anyone heres of this voice playing up in N.C. post it I would love to see him again...
In my view ones of the best bands ever..certainly the best I ever got to see (Borderline -London '93, Esplanade-Southend '94). Gifted and tasteful. Don't know why Kelly left but would love to see a reunion one day.
Kelly left for family reasons and its just a strange thing but some people just are not cut out to be on the road and tour and he hated it. They have gotten together a few times in Raleigh, NC but its been very rare. Jason still plays with bands around eastern NC, bass player is playing with Skynyrd, Kelly sings with a small local band in Raleigh, Audley.. well he is all over. Fortunately I live in the area and probably see Jason more than anyone. Nicest guy you'll ever meet.
Thanks for the reply. Being on the road is a dream for some but the reality of it is just loads of sacrifices. I saw Skynyrd in London a few months ago and did'nt realise it was Robert Kearns on bass til later!-his hair 's no longer curly-wonderful bass player who I also saw in London with the Bottle Rockets some years after Cry Of Love. I met Kelly at the Borderline gig and he was very friendly and polite to put up with me and my drunken ramblings. Seeing the band really inspired me.
I am about the same age as these guys and actually took guitar lessons briefly from Audley. Man is a monster guitar player! Jason is actually a good friend of mine and we go see him play about once a month with whatever band he might be with. Super drummer but the most down to earth person you'll ever meet. His stent with COC was a pretty good run over in Europe but that's been a while now.
About Kelly leaving COL; that's what I read initially, but other stories popped up too on the former Cry Of Love/Audley Freed forum...
One story was he got sacked by Audley (who regretted it almost immediately).
Another story is Kelly's wasn't comfortable with the role of being frontman/lead singer (in particular how the record company saw this). He'd rather be a drummer. (he's been drummin' with Crush for years now)
Plus I second what u said about Jason! Very nice guy indeed.
I didn't read it, I asked him. Crush plays in my hometown about every weekend. He said it was due to family reasons at the time which made him uncomfortable as lead man, and yes Audley wanted to press full steam ahead but he just didn't. That's why it was "written" so many different ways. Its a very very old story and no one here ever talks about it any more.
Saw these guys in the Cat House in Glasgow touring the Brother Album ,out this world .Never got to see Free at there best ,but would imagine it would have sounded something like this .Singers the closest ive heard to a young Paul Rodgers .p.s some guitar solo on carnival if you can get to hear it you should ,wah wah heaven.fantastic post cheers
I have loved Cry of Love for well over a decade now and was in North Carolina this summer. What I wouldn't give to see you play LIVE. I've been waiting so these videos will do just fine. Thanks.
Cry Rules..A Reunion is in order..Radio suckes and really sucked when Cry was coming out..They busted there asses and the radio was really moving mainstream..I really like their format, style and songsmithing..Miss you guys..Can I pay you to get back home?
A reunion would be awesome. It's not to often you come across such a rounded band. Great singer, great guitarist, great bassist, great drummer. I can't believe they didn't get more radio play.
Won tickets to see this coolest band ever in Chicago at the Cubby Bear back in '93. The only problem was you had to be 21 to get in and I was 20. So I scratched of my birthdate on my drivers license. Got pulled over shortly after I did it and the cop asked me what I did to my drivers license. I explained to him why and he let me off. I would do anything to see them then and to see them back together again.
Caught them on this tour at a club where you right on top of the band like this(this isn't from 616 is it?) and they had all kinds of chops and power to how Cry of Love played.
Coldest day of the year to that point, "Too Cold in the Winter" was HOT!
This song rules nothing like it out to there to sing and drive with.
Lawd Have Mercy! I wonder if Audley is still playing with Peter Frampton? I really wish this band would've had a longer career. I would love to hear more albums from them. Audley has done well with Black Crowes for a while too. Hell he got to play with Page and Frampton and most people have never heard of him. Shame!
Fantastic vid, I caught these guys in a club here in SC when this album came out. They flat out killed! Audley was laying it down just like this and KH had a set of pipes that just didn't quit. Thanks for posting.
This band just plain kicked ass Live!!! Not bad in the studio either. Audley Freed is in the top 10 guitarest no question! He can play anything at all and make it look easy! Regroup guys, the rock world needs you!!!!!
This is great!! ,, it's a sad sad world when bands like this don't become big , instead the RC's fill the charts with soulless corporate puppets .. *sigh ....

Didn't Audley Freed play with The Black Crowes and Chris Robinson (solo)?
He's an awesome guitarist. Reminds me of Jimi and SRV

@Kingsnake77
Yes that is correct.
He is on the Black Crowes album Lions. And Chris Robinson's solo albums New Earth Mud and Magnificent Distance.
He's been touring with Jacob Dylan, Peter Frampton and many others.
