  • Great J. Prine song. Nat makes it, but I can't help but notice how mike disses her the entire song. I don't like the word dis, but it seemed appropriate here. grow-up mike.

  • Joan Baez recorded this on her "Diamonds & Rust" album...this is a nice cover IMO :o)

  • lovely

  • Brilliant video!

I read that it was performed at:

3 June 1990 - Big Day Festival, Glasgow, Scotland

set: Disturbance At The Heron House (Stipe/Bragg) / Don't Talk (Merchant/Bragg) / Hello In There (Stipe/Merchant/Bragg)

So not in March 1990, but in June ;-)

  • Lovely prformances - 3 stars enjoying the glow of musical friendship - wish I'd been there...

  • come on....its not fair if I in fact am everything and everyone....can't natalie be my dream?

  • recorded in glasgow by the clyde

  • magia

  • I never heard this before. WOW!!! Natalie and Michael at their very best in this amazing song.

  • Hey Gyrkin:

What you so uptight about? Relax and enjoy. You don't need me to tell you what you're watching and I respect the privacy of people I work with.

  • Try reading Michael Stipe the Biography Rob Jovanoic. You can order it on Amazon. Plus it's a well known fact anyhow. Plus Michael sleeps with both men and women and those are his own words. He is not gay he is bi. He had dated a Frenchman for the past ten years or so but he has slept with women in the past including Natalie. Plus he had girlfriends in his younger days which he has stated openly. Do your research man! I have been researching the guys since 1991.

  • not an awkward moment between her and stipe...you are missing the whole message of the song! listen to the words! he's blowing her off "to show us what we do to our elderly"!!! then, when she's ingnored, she continues to find someone who will say HELLO ( in this case its billy)....geezez!

  • Michael and Natalie were lovers for a time

  • @fred6059 Right. Where'd you get that from? How about they're FRIENDS, since Michael's been pretty openly gay just about forever. Still a really great, relevant song.

  • @FoxIslandman

I've seen this video many dozens of times (I have the VHS since '92) and never noticed an awkward moment. Based on their personalities I've gotten to recognize over the years, they look comfortable and at ease especially since I think they are friends.

  • nom nom nom listening to this cleanses my soul

  • Love the original song and almost makes me cry - this really is an amazing video: Natalie, Michael and Billy.

  • I love this. Always have and always will. From a classic Maniacs VHS called Time Capsule!!!

  • I dont like this song, but I like them both

  • @FoxIslandman: that's what I thought at first, but when I watched it again it looks like she was trying to catch Billy's eye, not Stipe's.

Also, did you catch the part where she tears up on the last chorus and verse? Michael notices it and gestures to her.

  • love this!

  • Eu amo a Natalie e o Michael Stiper, eles são demais! Essa música então, sem comentários!! linda!!

  • I; had this a long time ago on a bottleg tape. What a blessing to find it on Yout Tube. Such a haunting, profound, song. It fits with R.E.M. especially there older work.

  • this is okay, two talented musicians singing a song.

When John sings it, whether today or 40 years ago, you feel it through your whole body. Bette did a good job, but some songs just should be left intact.

  • sorry, Bette does it 1000% times better

almost makes me want to slit my own wrists....good lord, this sucks

  • sorry, Bette does it 1000% times better

  • Love this song despite a recording environment nightmare ! Beautiful "sad song" expertly performed AKA FELT ..... Why Stipe crying at the end !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the BEST cover of one of the BEST Prine songs,, makes me cry...

  • micheal does not acknoledge her much in this? especially at the end.

  • @ivorbigonee If you listen really carefully, at the beginning you can hear her telling him the words. Maybe he got in a strop:)

  • Comment removed

  • @ivorbigonee -not so, he is just caught in the moment with the audience, then he looks to the right to his friend and then back at natalie at the end , all great moments

  • What is that Stipe move at 2:21? What the hell is that?

  • @twinoak170 you hae too much time on your hands

  • @123xyzSam I need an answer.

  • @twinoak170 you need a job

  • @123xyzSam You need to find a sense of humor.

  • Is this found on a recording anywhere?? On a CD or itunes? Just beautiful

  • @agbstar It's on a CD single that was released, with a few other tracks.

  • Billy looks so young.

  • Billy Bragg's name should be in the title of this post, too.

  • @friendlier

Should they also include the name of the keybord player in the back?

  • this song gives a new and fresh look at John Prine.. It is a tribute to a great songwriter... I love Natalies voice.. she is great...

  • las dos mejores voces que he escuchado

  • I first knew this song by Joan Baez, and I always shiver every time I listen to it.

I think we're all potential candidates to spend a lonely old age.

This version is just as great as Joan's, although neither of them wrote the song.

    This duet's performance was great!

  • One of my all time favorite duets.

  • Absolutely a Young Billy Bragg on guitar. Don't give up on the elders!

  • Is that Billy Bragg playing guitar on this?

  • @JaxMusicSupply It is.

  • @JaxMusicSupply Sure is! What an amazing trio.

  • Wow, they both sound great on this.

  • say hello they would have made beautiful musical babies

  • Natalie's voice and persona are 100,000 times more effective, beautiful, and moving than Stipe's. Should have just been her. He bring her down.

  • @LillyBunnyBoo You're talking about the frontman of the most important American band of the 1980's. Certainly 10000 Maniacs can't compare to REM!?

  • @ogdocvato ROFL!!! You're kidding, right? Natalie Merchant is a fabulously talented SINGER. Michael Stipe is merely passable...not talking about the BAND. The individual.

  • bragg stipe and the goddess, caan it be be better than

this? nothing belongs to my my nat

  • @zamumbel Isn't Natalie Merchant what Italian-American rock divas should be like instead of Madonna or Lady Gaga?

  • @ogdocvato to be honest, i realy like madonna and gaga. but i like to infect people with natalie`s live performances. like most of my friends i like guitarmusic, but who cares-she is the most gifted artist i know.

she wrote her last album for her child. must be a hard childhood if natalie lullabys you to sleep.

  • What a breath of fresh air from the slicked-up, glossed over, over dubbed artificial mannequins running around singing on mainstream. Real people, real music. Great video. Wish I was there jamming too.

  • Is that Billy Bragg on guitar?

  • Nice Job on this great John Prine song! This is a few years before I worked with Natalie (and Michael Stipe joined us on one leg) on the "Our Time in Eden" Tour; her farewell tour with the Maniacs! Quite a rich experience for me.

  • @Scottfb1028 Glad you had that experience... but aside from telling us all about you, what does that have to do with the tune/video?

  • @Scottfb1028 Lucky you what were you doing on the tour?

  • I was there and you can see me in the front row at the end, Glasgow, some city, some culture!!!!!

  • great john prine song, bette midler actually does a heartbreaking version...

  • great!!!

  • I met him once and he was a not so nice. This moves him up. He owes Natalie big thanks.

  • First, you got to give Billy Bragg his due, the man has chops. As for to coment that Michael stipe seems amaturish ,listen to the textures of the music, It's about layering.....Listen to Billy Bragg's last words and you'll get it.

  • Stumbled upon this GEM. Thank you for posting. A performance both perfect and touching.

  • Why isn't Billy Bragg given credit?

  • @feline13x

I know, right? I was asking the same thing in the first 2 seconds. Bragg deserves to be in the description at least!

  • so glad to have the memories that go along with this moment in time, here's to the friends who have gone. Maybe we should all just say hello now and again.

  • Please don't change the lyrics to a John Prine song...otherwise very good !

  • Yeah. Wow. Beautiful. Thank you.

  • Life has been good for me and the future looks even brighter. However if I had a chance to jump back in time, I would jump back to this point in time at this concert on this day. Awesome song, and artists. Makes me feel so good inside. God bless you you Natalie and Michael.

  • She makes Michael seem amateur

  • @Diddlen Only the very, very best can hold the stage alongside her.

  • She makes Michael seem amature

  • Check out Michael's face at 3.26 as Billy knocks out an REM riff :D

  • beautiful girls that sing help me believe in god

  • What a great trio singing a fantastic song

  • I love this version of this tune. I've had it on audio for years but this is the first time I've seen this video.

    Coolness.

  • @petelee67

    Word

  • Nice work.

  • Prine is best on this song but this is VERY nice! Merchant is good and so beatuiful!!!!!

  • I like at the beginning when she tells him the words to start the song. Her extrovertedness compliments his introvertedness well :D

  • don't forget billy bragg on guitar!!

  • Love it and twenty years later I still love it... Brilliant.

  • How in love were they then!

  • Comment removed

  • classic

  • Wow, amazing! Makes me want to cry a tear or two. The year of this performance takes me way back to one of the happiest times in my life. A pretty interesting point in history, because a few years later the internet would proliferate into peoples lifes. Such a beautiful song, performed by 3 amazing people. I wish I could jump back into time and revel in this performance. dookdawq214, how lucky you are.

  • That's Billy Brag on the guitar. It was great seeing them all together on stage. I watched that live.

  • I didn't think anyone could sing that song as well as John Prine, but these two come close.

  • make Mr Prine proud, kids!

  • Hi TP ;) Hello there =)

  • Natalie all the way! Listen to that voice! wow! She deserves a Grammy

  • Best post on You Tube ever...in any category. Thanks a lot

  • Gods, THIS is what YouTube is for! Where else do you find these wonderful performances -- is that Billy Bragg playing guitar? Holy Hannah! I adore all of them, and this song is a classic, heard it when I was a teenager (and that was better than 30 years ago). John Prine FTW!!

  • Beautiful rendition of a great Prine song.

  • Beautiful rendition of a great Prine song.

  • Wow, how powerful. Need I say more?

  • That was...brilliant. Wish I had been there.

  • @ecosmart123 i was at this concert it was for glasgow big day it was down at the clyde river quay so many bands were playing all over glasgow that day but the day belonged to natalie and michael and billy amazing performance

outside lots of people could not gain entry as it was packed solid

  • A TREASURE of a song this is!

  • HELLO!

  • @birksandbluejeans you tube "natalie merchant&michael stipe-hello in there-live

  • For such a moment to be captured, I am thankful. Beautiful.

  • I watch and enjoy this most days.

just i would say this is bliissfull music.

  • And Billy Bragg on guitar. Legend.

  • Michael's voice is just fantastic in this clip. And I love him yellow jacket, sunglass and hat. :-)

  • Absolutely mesmerizing! Two of the most amazing alternative singer-songwriters ever....

  • her voice gets me every time. :)

    and who can resist Michael?!?!

  • Beautiful. The John Prine original is really great, but this is sublime.

  • Thank you for the song John Prine. You are a treasure.

  • My 94 year old grandfather passed away last week , and we laid him to rest sat. This song just came to mind today , and am glad I found this version . I play it on an acoustic but this version was really good . Thanks for sharing .

  • @FoxIslandman Oh yes!! can u see it also?? The way she looks at him (in other videos where they sing together also) that's not only for a friendship...

  • @rhapsodier78 I believe it's the last woman he dated before giving in to the fact that he's gay. I'm sure he loved her too, just didn't want to admit it for fear of getting hurt, but you can sure tell she cherishes him. I love their duets. Her voice is so dynamic, almost overpowering to his, although he's one of my favorite performers of all time. His voice has really improved with time. I like that he's announciating more

  • @inknerb Great post-I've seen Natalie solo many times and voice is piercing-she sounds magical-I love her so much. I was in the lobby at the St. James theater and heard her sound check-man she sounded like an angel.

  • Am so deeply in love with the voice of Natalie, she looks so damned beautifull in this video. I LOVE her, 4sure....

  • I remember being here it was a gorgeous day in Glasgow and i cried when i heard this song x it was a very emotional atmosphere x thanks to natalie merchant ,michael stipe an billy bragg for this beutiful memory x

  • I'm in this video, was right at the front near the stage and you can see me at the end standing up and cheering, it was an amazing day and such a fantastic vibe from Stipe, Merchant and Bragg!! Memories!

  • i can never get enough of stipe and merchant together.. they are priceless and a gift to humanity..

  • So awesome. I wish the sound quality was better.

  • @BananaHurricane Hey! you can watch the video on natalie merchant's homepage under the section "blind man's zoo" in a better quality.

  • Wish I knew where i could get a version of this......can't find it on itunes....!

  • @cookewitch The on'ly place I've ever seen it is on The Laser Disc version of 10000 Maniacs "Time Capsule" It's like a greatest video hits anthology. It's got some really great stuff on it.

ps. Look on Amazon for Time Capsule re-released on DVD

  • Can't stop listening to this song, can't stop marvelling at Natalie's voice, gesture...

  • magnific performance! yes!!

  • Sometimes older people enjoy being in hospital because they meet so many people and socialise a lot there. It is tragic really that you have to be sick/dying to meet people, that the last of your days could be the most enjoyable days that you have had for a long time.

  • say hello,

    wave good bye.

  • what a beautiful cover of john prines song

  • wow...that's sheet power

  • What a great trio ! Simple and wonderful performance.

  • Natalie will b on Jay Leno show - april 21,2010 !!!

  • is Billy Bragg invisible?

  • when stipe used to sing..he growls now!

  • Wow, really nice song! I've never heard it b4 now. This is the dude from R.E.M. right? Summing i'm correct (about REM), is this an REM song or is it just Michael Stipe's? Like from a "solo" project/album?

  • @gjc82071 It is by the legendary John Prine.

  • I WAS THERE!!!!! Amazing day.

  • Thank You

  • Wonderful Billy Bragg on guitar!!!

  • Their voices go so well together.

  • Good, but just doesn't have the passion and soul of John Prine

  • Comment removed

  • Agreed, but it's still such a sweet version and anything that might lead people back to the original can only be a good thing.

  • ..and there's good ol Billy..strumming along

  • What a tremendous song and this performance is simply magical.

  • @ChesterFanningChorno

This may be a recommendation difficult to take if you are into these guys, but the definative version of this song has the be the Bette Midler (I know I know) one for the debut album. Give it a shot it may surprise you lol

  • @ChesterFanningChorno I want to cry now...

  • @ChesterFanningChorno you are so right...i have this video....

i saw michael well up and it always brings a tear to my eyes

you know..michael and natalie dated for a bit!... crazy

  • great !

but a stupide behaviour of stipe

nice like Natalie was passing him... :-)

  • There are no singers like Stipe nor Merchant anymore. Maybe only people with class like Thom Yorke or Eddie Vedder

  • i love u nat

  • He he Natalie had to remind stipe of the tune, he always forgets

  • Natalie Merchant sings this with such ease. Her vocals are impressive. Good vibe from this performance but, it does make me want to cry as well as smile.

  • Dear Ida-Mae,

Glad Paul and I got to visit you and say hello. I'm happy you are in a really good place.

Thank you for the hospitality you have always shown Paul and myself when we would visit.

You have a wonderful family and have done a great job!

    Thank you

  • Poor old Billy Bragg doesn't get a mention on guitar no?

  • @door32 No doubt! Great song, but Billy needs a tag eh?

  • I dont think anyone outside UK knows who the Bard of Dagenham is.

  • Yes, they were lovers for years. Natalie herself have said that in a interview.

  • Joan Baez does a great version of this.

  • so does John Prine.... hehehehe

  • 1:47 the guy walking in the background didnt even care to look at them once......

  • Absolute favorite!

  • GooD Day

  • Both great artists, Natalie looks gorgeous, like a radiant gemstone, the artista. If Stipes is or was bi, I hope he loved her up. He sings REM's end of the world song so fast, i dont think anyone can match it. In 93 they were two peas in a pod at the innaugural ball utube video. Savor all this Natalie footage amongst the finest footage of music history!

  • truly beautiful

    makes me want to cry

  • stipe has been out of the closet since the 80's, where have you ppl been

  • Stipe and Merchant were in a relationship at one time they both did an interview in the independent on sunday where they described how they met ...this was filmed at the bandstand by the river clyde in Glasgow as part of the "Big day" festival

  • Not true. Stipe came out of the closet for the public around 2001 . Before that he had relationships with both men and women. Natalie Merchant herself have said in a interview that she and Stipe were lovers for years. I think they started around 1987. In 1990 they were still together, so to speak.
