Great J. Prine song. Nat makes it, but I can't help but notice how mike disses her the entire song. I don't like the word dis, but it seemed appropriate here. grow-up mike.
Try reading Michael Stipe the Biography Rob Jovanoic. You can order it on Amazon. Plus it's a well known fact anyhow. Plus Michael sleeps with both men and women and those are his own words. He is not gay he is bi. He had dated a Frenchman for the past ten years or so but he has slept with women in the past including Natalie. Plus he had girlfriends in his younger days which he has stated openly. Do your research man! I have been researching the guys since 1991.
not an awkward moment between her and stipe...you are missing the whole message of the song! listen to the words! he's blowing her off "to show us what we do to our elderly"!!! then, when she's ingnored, she continues to find someone who will say HELLO ( in this case its billy)....geezez!
@fred6059 Right. Where'd you get that from? How about they're FRIENDS, since Michael's been pretty openly gay just about forever. Still a really great, relevant song.
I've seen this video many dozens of times (I have the VHS since '92) and never noticed an awkward moment. Based on their personalities I've gotten to recognize over the years, they look comfortable and at ease especially since I think they are friends.
I; had this a long time ago on a bottleg tape. What a blessing to find it on Yout Tube. Such a haunting, profound, song. It fits with R.E.M. especially there older work.
this is okay, two talented musicians singing a song.
When John sings it, whether today or 40 years ago, you feel it through your whole body. Bette did a good job, but some songs just should be left intact.
Love this song despite a recording environment nightmare ! Beautiful "sad song" expertly performed AKA FELT ..... Why Stipe crying at the end !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ivorbigonee -not so, he is just caught in the moment with the audience, then he looks to the right to his friend and then back at natalie at the end , all great moments
@ogdocvato ROFL!!! You're kidding, right? Natalie Merchant is a fabulously talented SINGER. Michael Stipe is merely passable...not talking about the BAND. The individual.
@ogdocvato to be honest, i realy like madonna and gaga. but i like to infect people with natalie`s live performances. like most of my friends i like guitarmusic, but who cares-she is the most gifted artist i know.
she wrote her last album for her child. must be a hard childhood if natalie lullabys you to sleep.
What a breath of fresh air from the slicked-up, glossed over, over dubbed artificial mannequins running around singing on mainstream. Real people, real music. Great video. Wish I was there jamming too.
Nice Job on this great John Prine song! This is a few years before I worked with Natalie (and Michael Stipe joined us on one leg) on the "Our Time in Eden" Tour; her farewell tour with the Maniacs! Quite a rich experience for me.
First, you got to give Billy Bragg his due, the man has chops. As for to coment that Michael stipe seems amaturish ,listen to the textures of the music, It's about layering.....Listen to Billy Bragg's last words and you'll get it.

@FoxIslandman Oh yes!! can u see it also?? The way she looks at him (in other videos where they sing together also) that's not only for a friendship...
@rhapsodier78 I believe it's the last woman he dated before giving in to the fact that he's gay. I'm sure he loved her too, just didn't want to admit it for fear of getting hurt, but you can sure tell she cherishes him. I love their duets. Her voice is so dynamic, almost overpowering to his, although he's one of my favorite performers of all time. His voice has really improved with time. I like that he's announciating more
@inknerb Great post-I've seen Natalie solo many times and voice is piercing-she sounds magical-I love her so much. I was in the lobby at the St. James theater and heard her sound check-man she sounded like an angel.

Natalie Merchant sings this with such ease. Her vocals are impressive. Good vibe from this performance but, it does make me want to cry as well as smile.
Both great artists, Natalie looks gorgeous, like a radiant gemstone, the artista. If Stipes is or was bi, I hope he loved her up. He sings REM's end of the world song so fast, i dont think anyone can match it. In 93 they were two peas in a pod at the innaugural ball utube video. Savor all this Natalie footage amongst the finest footage of music history!
Stipe and Merchant were in a relationship at one time they both did an interview in the independent on sunday where they described how they met ...this was filmed at the bandstand by the river clyde in Glasgow as part of the "Big day" festival
Not true. Stipe came out of the closet for the public around 2001 . Before that he had relationships with both men and women. Natalie Merchant herself have said in a interview that she and Stipe were lovers for years. I think they started around 1987. In 1990 they were still together, so to speak.
Great J. Prine song. Nat makes it, but I can't help but notice how mike disses her the entire song. I don't like the word dis, but it seemed appropriate here. grow-up mike.

You want to cry? Listen to the original version by John Prine. It blows this waste of time away( and ordinarily I really like Natalie Merchant).
