  • Just because I'm an atheist bent on steering humanity away from the evils of religion doesn't mean I can't enjoy good music. I love Enya songs and Latin songs. It's a shame Latin is a dead language.

  • this song is hauntingly beautiful, but it's really different from all christian songs i've heard. christian songs are usually praising christ or thanking god for sending him. but this one is obviously from the point of view in time before christ, & has a decidedly jewish theme of mourning in exile, waiting for god to send a savior to take the chosen ones back to him.

  • Enya captures the mournful nature of this song perfectly.

    O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.

  • @SicSemperTyranis The problem with your statement is that it is only partially true. You know, like in court we swear to "tell the truth, the WHOLE truth, and nothing but the truth." That oath eliminates all deception. We are saved as we open the door of our being to allow Jesus to enter our hearts and minds, but we would not know who He is or what He is like without the teachings of the Scriptures. How can Christians distinguish between the TRUE Messiah and a false one? Doctrines.

  • @barneysghost By knowing His word. and He told us not to swear Oaths. Let your yes be your yes and your no be no. :D

  • I long to hear enya sing some of my favorite worship songs!

  • superbe chanson !!!!!

  • I'm atheist ....

  • @zeldoxy Yeah...so?

  • Its Acually Called Behold A Tiny Baby.....

  • I'm not Catholic, I don't think you need to have a religion in order to see how beautiful and touching this song is. There will always be love for Enya, thank you for uploading 5/5

  • im not a religious person , i have little faith in anything these days, i adore Enya, so why do i burst into tears when she sings this and feel humble. stupid or what,

  • @TheShazvamp I also am in tears when I hear these beautiful songs...

  • @TheShazvamp When God visits you personally the quality is through the roof. His followers tend to spoil the dish. I do wish you well.

  • I second what PaulFelixSchott said. I pray that as well. :) Praise to God in the Highest, and on earth, peace, and good will towards men. :)

  • The picture at 2:58 ... My goodness, but that woman is gorgeous!

  • A friend of mine has performed Veni, Veni Emannuel in Latin for her church choir, I listened to a hand tape recorder version of the performance (this was back in 1995, mind you) and it brought tears to my eyes. Honestly, it still does almost 20 years later...thank you for sharing! Yeah, I'm an atheist BTW, but anything sung in Latin with such reverence makes me wonder what I'm missing...;)

  • brividi....cheers from italy

  • Chill Bumps <3

  • This song is still powerful in our catholic church in the dense countryside of

Quidham in Norfolk England. And when its sang the hairs on your hands and neck will stand up even on the most hardest atheists. For the Lord is your breath and can touch your heart in such away your never forget the power of God. Alleluia Alleluia, Nomini Patris et Spiritus Sancti Amen

  • my sister cried when see heard this song

    but i like it

  • @deardairymitjung I consider myself a man, and I cry when I hear this song.

  • LOVE DIZ SONG AS WELL..

    Praise The Lord..

    ^.^

  • This is very beautiful! Never heard this song until now.

  • Beautiful!

  • in 4th grade in a school called St Cyrils we practiced this song from 11-2-64 to 12 -24-64 and with the teachers help mrs bouchard we sounded like the living voices do at CHRISTMAS ITS SO LONG AGO NOW AT 57 I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M THINKING ABOUT THIS I HOPE THE GRIM REAPERS NOT COMING FOR ME HAVE A GREAT2012 ALL

  • Another beautiful presentation by Enya--a genius and master. Thank you.

  • Jesus is above this religion called Christianity and this song is reverence to His name in All Glory, Power, Honour The All of Our Source where we come and return and answer to.

  • thank you for the warm blessing from Ireland!

  • Immediately upon hearing this song its makes me want to kneel and bow my head in total submission to my God. All praise be to our lord Jesus Christ.

  • We're lucky to have this beautiful song, sung to us by a truly angelic woman. So many great songs from this era have vanished into Time immemorial, since, at the time they were written, musical notation did not exist. She is saving the songs that do, and spectacularly so.

  • Heavenly.......i love it :)

  • This is an Advent Carol, not Christmas picking nits, it's Christian and not belonging more to one denomination than the other. It takes it's queue and inspiration from Isaiah in the Hebrew Bible, the faith that Jesus tried to reform. It's for all humanity and not for a special group of us.

That the tune is chant like isn't surprising as Gregorian and Anglican chants were very popular when the translation took place. Enjoy, pray and be with God and Enya. There is nothing else to say.

  • This is one of my favourite Christmas carols and the singer on here has an awesome voice, absolutely fantastic. Thank-you whoever posted this. Alan. Peace & Love to you all.

  • Once again Enya transporting me to that tranquil, peaceful place where I can rest and enjoy the angels that surround me, she has that kind of magic in me......

  • This is beautiful - I also love the version by Clare College Cambridge - Although sung by a normal choir, it is very powerful. I am another non-religious person who finds some religious music very moving.

  • Wonderful ! Merry Christmas !

    Season's Greetings from Romania !

  • I am not a religious person if fact, it is my believe that religion has caused more misery, death and war in the world than anything else. But Enya’s voice is truly amazing, I have loads of Enya’s music I find it so relaxing and soothing simply the best. But this song and the voice is out of this world.

  • The English lyrics are different from the ones I'm used to hearing, which is a little distracting. But so lovely! As if Enya could sing anything but. :-)

  • One word...no wait, there isn't one word that can describe this song, for one word alone isn't enough...

tell me why, when i say those words in my head, they sound rather redundant..

  • I think it's half English half Gaelic

  • @cmaggiore Actually, it is half English and half Latin.

  • @cmaggiore the other part is latin. The song is originally CATHOLIC. It is one of the MOST SOLEMN ADVENT HYMNS of the CATHOLIC CHURCH.

  • @wajutiem08 Yes its 18th century Latin translated by John Mason Neale, the original version began, 'Draw nigh draw nigh Immanuel, and was published in Medieval Hymns 1851, it was altered by the editors of the first edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern which was published in 1861. The Tune, Veni Immanuel is of French origin.

  • @alatterapy thanks for the info. I did not know that. :)

  • @wajutiem08 Hi, thanks for your message, I'm a Church organist and posess 2 books, one is 'Music of the Methodist Hymn Book'(1933 edition) the second is companion to Hymns & Psalms (A later Methodist Hymn Book (1988 edition) These books give the origin of tunes and words in the books, they are very useful indeed. Alan.

  • I just saw this played on an Erhu, (Chinese fiddle). Search youtube for betti xiang o come emmanuel, It was absolutely beautiful!!

  • omg!!! LOVE this!!! th e transition between english and what i am assuming is irish was flawless!!!

  • @ronnymatt81 The other part is Latin.

  • @Jesusisyhwh According to 'The Music of The Methodist Hymn Book (1933 publication) and Companion to Hymns & Psalms (1988 publication) The tune is 15th century and belonged to French Franciscan Nuns. Thanks Alan.

  • @ronnymatt81 no it is ENGLISH to LATIN. This 8TH century MOST SOLEMN ADVENT HYMN was ORIGINALLY in LATIN and then it was TRANSLATED into ENGLISH in the 19th century from its latin text "veni, veni emmanuel".

  • @wajutiem08 cool. thx.

  • Such greatness and purity! The best songs are those with a religion of goodness!

  • Catholic and Christian are all Christian's! The Catholic Church is the oldest Christian Church 2012 years old! God Bless you

  • @armando1955ifyThe Catholic Church is NOT the oldest Christian Church. The Orthodox Church is. There were 5 main hubs to the church, & the "capital" of the church was Constantinople. People came from all over to see the icons and relics. When the Holy Wars broke out, the church collectively decided to get all the artifacts as far away from the war as possible. That was Rome. After the war, the church wanted everything returned, Rome said no, and started the Catholic Church.

  • @MARIVERA106

No... you're wrong too. The oldest church preceded our modern institutions and classifications of Christianity. It began with the 12 men who walked and talked with Jesus Christ. It was no collection of doctrines or architecture-- it was Christ Himself.

  • @SicSemperTyranis Okay, I'll concede that point. =)

Just to clarify though, I'm not of either denomination.

  • Thank you Sportymike:and thanks for this beautiful song!

  • I am not Christian or Catholic..the bigotry is usually fanatism in religion..I happen to think this is just a beautiful work by Enya..you may have have the ability to block but not alter one's personal beliefs..think before you speak for the God you believe in..thou shall not judge lest you will be judged in heaven..once again this song is sung beautifully by Enya..no more , no less

  • Regardless of it being a religious song or not, it touches the spirit. Hopefully it would open a part of you, to be thankful for being alive and appreciate what we have.

  • i looooove this song , me and my friends said it sounds like someone would play this after many wariors died in a movie (; btw loove the song were doing it at our christmsas special at church were having a famous choreographer dance to it . vid soon to come

  • ¸¸.•*¨*•♪♫•* beautifuul....

  • O Come Emanuel is one of the most touching spirited songs proclaiming HIS coming. You did good. I wish I was the girl in your vid. Merry Xmas to you.

  • Agreed, a fine work

  • I could (and do) listen to this song over and over again. It's so beautiful.

  • very beutiful

  • This made me cry, so beautiful.

  • I'm a pagan and I enjoy this song, what of it.

  • @corbanado12 - God loves all his children, maybe especially his pagan ones.

  • @jhr459 Totally concur. John 3:16 loosely says "God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son (Emanuel) so that none may perish but ALL have eternal life. " The "all" means even Osama Bin Laden and Hitler. All.

  • @oAndJoegottago They may be resurrected from the dead, but they won't share eternal life with those that overcame the world through Christ Jesus. They will get to share outer darkness with Lucifer their Prince of Darkness in Hades.

  • @matteach2 agree. What is meant by that verse is everyone gets a chance to make the choice, but once you die, it's done. If you surrender your life to Jesus, you have eternal life. If you don't, you lose the gift. Pretty much assured that Osama and Hitler will be in the "smoking section" for eternity.

  • @jhr459 i like this, y no all christians think this way?

  • A Very Good Song and Video ! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

  • May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Light up your world and warm your Heart this Christmas 2011.

Help save the lost tell all about Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    As did St. Nicholas (AD 270 - Dec 6, 343) and St. Francis (1182 - 1226)

and as did all the Staints.

  • @PaulFelixSchott The "lost"? More like the sane*.

  • In the year of our Lord 1223 Saint Francis

started building the Manger Scenes for all the world to see the way it was

on that First Christmas Night. All time on Earth Started New then, as the

Angels guided the fist visitors a Shepherd Boy and Three Wise Kings. To see

our Lord and Savior as a baby at The First Christmas Manger Scene.

    The Lord's Little Helper

    Paul Felix Schott

  • And do I have to be pro-Catholic, pro-Christian and other things to say that this song is absolutely charming? Even more so when done by Enya?

  • @GodmyX I guess it would help ;)

  • Praise to you oh Jesus Christ!!!Lovely...Indeed,a Lovely Song

  • I'm a Pagan, but even I love this song.

  • @WynterSong so you worship many gods

  • @WynterSong I hear you!

  • @WynterSong

Turn to Christ my friend, he welcomes all.

  • @Watts527 Been there, done that. I've found better, in my opinion.

  • @WynterSong

    Good luck w/ that!!

  • It makes me worship Immanuel. It's Irish, I suppose. Her irish version of Silent Night is a winner, too.

  • @1niftyjay Hi its not Irish Veni Immanuel is of French origin and Silent Night is of Austrian origin, written by an Austrian priest, Joseph Mohr for Christmas 1818.It was originally translated as Still the Night Holy the Night, then altered in 1927 to Silent Night Holy Night. Thanks Alan.

  • This is exceptional, there is none like Jesus, there is none like The Father who sent His Son.

  • We sang this in Church, and I cried.

  • What a voice, what a song so pure so calming so haunting so angelic so lovely and kind. this song sounds like heaven its so peaceful it makes me feel clean

  • @Sesshomaus1fangirl I so definitely agree with you.....Enya has the same effect on me....Her voice is a gift from heaven.....

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (Dec. 18, Advent 4), we sang this our opening hymn. It is #257 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

  • Comment removed

  • @mkl62 ELCA Ohio

  • This gave me goose bumps. I know, I'm a sentimental slob.

  • This is a Latin hymn of the ninth century the Gregorian melody.

  • @digomonsterz The words are of French origin and the tune was 'contributed' to the words by Thomas Helmore in 1856. (According to the Companion to Hymns & Psalms.) Thanks Alan.

  • also, the song kicks ass

  • I am an atheist, but as long as god can inspire this kind of music I don't find religion as useless as before.

  • Immensely beautiful song, her voice and tone, the power of this song; goes even far beyond my atheism. Perhaps other should listen more with their ears and hearts, than with their discriminatory minds; maybe then they'll listen the same song I did.

  • I met Enya a few years ago when she was in New Zealand... It was such an honour !!! AWESOME Lady and artist !! :) <3

  • @purplerainez OMG really ?!!?!? what was like did you two talk alot? omg i envy you

  • Our congregation sings this in church sometimes. It is very magical, I sometimes just close my eyes and listen to the beautiful echoes of our voices singing this song. Enya sings this so beautifully, she captures the magic and breathes it out when she sings this.

  • august burns red made me check on this song

  • So hauntingly beautiful!

  • Sportymike...Thank you for posting such a beautiful version of this song. God Bless You!

  • Immensely angelic...so beyond my comprehension.

  • It does not matter who is Catholic or Protestant or Anglican, God is in us all

  • @Marko59850 thank you fore saying that.

  • @Marko59850 well said.

  • Amazing!

  • It reminds me of the Mass when it was celebrated in Latin-I love that. Thanks.

  • Anti-Christian, Anti-Catholic or any other bigoted comment will be deleted and you will be blocked.

  • @Sportymike I don't like them either but why?

  • @Sportymike :)

  • @Sportymike What about anti-Semitic?

  • @SuperTaiji Bigoted includes Anti-Semitic I'm sure!

  • @Sportymike good. people need to stop being so hateful and start practicing religious tolerance. i'm tired of youtube being a forum for such ridiculous arguing

  • @Soccerplayer04071 Why are you listening to a Christian song if you think this is all in our heads?

And it's not just a BOOK, it's a first hand account of happenings from the biblical era. The people who wrote it did not belong in an assylum, as you probably are thinking, as with writers of the torah and other holy books of other religions.

Maybe you belog in an assylum, since you think it's a good idea to post horrible things on a holy song.

  • @Soccerplayer04071 You don't understand religion at all then. I get frustrated with the church, but God is always with us. We should live as Jesus did, seeking people like you to help you understand that he is real, in our heart always. I do not go to church, and I am far from perfect, but none of us are free from sin, and there is no sin greater than another.

  • @TanNTom im pretty sure murdering a baby is a greater sin then lying to your son about santa clause. but both are sins.

  • so hauntingly beautiful!!

  • @Soccerplayer04071

WHY IS THE BIBLE REWRITTEN IN ALMOST EVERY 2 YEARS?

    WHY DO WE CELEBRATE CHRISTAMAS?

    WHY DO WE CELEBRATE EASTER?

    WHY DO WE HAVE CATACOMBS?

WHY THE CHURCH EXIT SINCE THE FIRST ERAS?

WHY DO WE DISCOVER ANCIENT SCROLLS TELLING THAT GOD EXISTS?

WHY DONT YOU SHUT UP AND THINK FOR A SECOND BEFORE SAYING STUPID THINGS???

THINK!!!AND ASK YOURSELF WHY ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS BELIEVED IN GOD!AND WHY WE STILL BELIEVE!

  • @Soccerplayer04071 hi you .....just open your heart and you will be in peace...its no question of religion or any written papers, its the answer if the heart which tells you the truth......love, GOD IS....you will never find him on papers or pictures....HE its there for you IN you and thetas private.....I do wish you a beautiful mind.....LOVE IS!

  • beautiful

  • @Soccerplayer04071 prove to me that he is not real with saying one swear or are just anther cry baby out looking for some attition

  • @Soccerplayer04071 you can no disporve something is not there soly bc you can not see it can you see air no but you "belive" its there and also restoring to swears to get see your point of view is a sad and point less and also if yoou dont like what mjcpirate0025 is seeing then dont read comments under songs that are holy in naturl or hymls just a though

  • @Soccerplayer04071 you are a sad person.

  • forgive him for he does not know lord @soccerplayer04071

  • but this is a calming song, and amazing singer

  • @Soccerplayer04071 hey u have your rights to believe to your own religion if you have one, but dont go around talking crap about other ppls religions

  • , and Someday will answer "YES!"--at His Parousia (2nd Coming). Thus, the refrain of the hymn (which is not part of the liturgical antiphons): Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel (slightly different version Enya sings here). That is to say, simply, "Amen.--Yea, yea, It shall be so!"

The melody fits the attitude of mournful, penitent prayer.

  • Yo, people, this hymn is based on the great '"O Antiphons", used with the singing of the Magnificat at Vespers on the last 7 days before Christmas (Eve--the Festival of the Nativity of our Lord begins at sundown the 24th, so the Vespers of the 24th is the first service of Christmas itself). The antiphons are profound prayers of *Advent*--begging our Lord to come and be "Emmanuel"--God [in the flesh] with us, prayers He has already answered "Yes!", and still answers the same through Word and Sac

  • Love Enya.

  • bro... thats in latin...

  • sounds like the women from Lord of the Rings... O.o

  • @TmgTplayers i'm pretty sure it is her

  • @TmgTplayers She is from The Lord of the Rings. She sang a number of songs in the first movie, The Fellowship of the Rings.

  • @TmgTplayers It is. Our Co. Donegal singer Enya

  • @TmgTplayers it is Enya. She is from Co. Donegal in Ireland and did do the music for Lord of the rings..

  • I hope to the spirits that it snows this year. Because when it does, I'll walk outside and listen to this hauntingly beautiful music as the snowflakes dance around me, in the unearthly silence.

  • @Randomvids243 It doesn't snow much in south Texas where I am, but Emmanuel is alive here, too! He is come!

  • so beautiful!!!

  • Emmanuel - GOD with us.

  • Feel like i'm in one of those rustic-ish movies with dungeons and fire torches

  • Enya must be an angel.

  • demonic doesn't come to mind, otherworldly yes (in a good sense). As I understand it she is a devout Catholic.

  • @res89p6gk no it isnt, she isnt even religious, shes spiritual only.

  • Gorgeous... Just.. amazing...

  • Ethereal; takes us back to ancient times and ahead into the unknown future

  • Enya is so beautiful!

  • It's the the kind of singing that reeeeeeally gets me in to deeep thinking...
