Just because I'm an atheist bent on steering humanity away from the evils of religion doesn't mean I can't enjoy good music. I love Enya songs and Latin songs. It's a shame Latin is a dead language.
this song is hauntingly beautiful, but it's really different from all christian songs i've heard. christian songs are usually praising christ or thanking god for sending him. but this one is obviously from the point of view in time before christ, & has a decidedly jewish theme of mourning in exile, waiting for god to send a savior to take the chosen ones back to him.
@SicSemperTyranis The problem with your statement is that it is only partially true. You know, like in court we swear to "tell the truth, the WHOLE truth, and nothing but the truth." That oath eliminates all deception. We are saved as we open the door of our being to allow Jesus to enter our hearts and minds, but we would not know who He is or what He is like without the teachings of the Scriptures. How can Christians distinguish between the TRUE Messiah and a false one? Doctrines.
I'm not Catholic, I don't think you need to have a religion in order to see how beautiful and touching this song is. There will always be love for Enya, thank you for uploading 5/5
im not a religious person , i have little faith in anything these days, i adore Enya, so why do i burst into tears when she sings this and feel humble. stupid or what,
A friend of mine has performed Veni, Veni Emannuel in Latin for her church choir, I listened to a hand tape recorder version of the performance (this was back in 1995, mind you) and it brought tears to my eyes. Honestly, it still does almost 20 years later...thank you for sharing! Yeah, I'm an atheist BTW, but anything sung in Latin with such reverence makes me wonder what I'm missing...;)
This song is still powerful in our catholic church in the dense countryside of
Quidham in Norfolk England. And when its sang the hairs on your hands and neck will stand up even on the most hardest atheists. For the Lord is your breath and can touch your heart in such away your never forget the power of God. Alleluia Alleluia, Nomini Patris et Spiritus Sancti Amen
in 4th grade in a school called St Cyrils we practiced this song from 11-2-64 to 12 -24-64 and with the teachers help mrs bouchard we sounded like the living voices do at CHRISTMAS ITS SO LONG AGO NOW AT 57 I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M THINKING ABOUT THIS I HOPE THE GRIM REAPERS NOT COMING FOR ME HAVE A GREAT2012 ALL
Jesus is above this religion called Christianity and this song is reverence to His name in All Glory, Power, Honour The All of Our Source where we come and return and answer to.
We're lucky to have this beautiful song, sung to us by a truly angelic woman. So many great songs from this era have vanished into Time immemorial, since, at the time they were written, musical notation did not exist. She is saving the songs that do, and spectacularly so.
This is an Advent Carol, not Christmas picking nits, it's Christian and not belonging more to one denomination than the other. It takes it's queue and inspiration from Isaiah in the Hebrew Bible, the faith that Jesus tried to reform. It's for all humanity and not for a special group of us.
That the tune is chant like isn't surprising as Gregorian and Anglican chants were very popular when the translation took place. Enjoy, pray and be with God and Enya. There is nothing else to say.
This is one of my favourite Christmas carols and the singer on here has an awesome voice, absolutely fantastic. Thank-you whoever posted this. Alan. Peace & Love to you all.
Once again Enya transporting me to that tranquil, peaceful place where I can rest and enjoy the angels that surround me, she has that kind of magic in me......
This is beautiful - I also love the version by Clare College Cambridge - Although sung by a normal choir, it is very powerful. I am another non-religious person who finds some religious music very moving.
I am not a religious person if fact, it is my believe that religion has caused more misery, death and war in the world than anything else. But Enya’s voice is truly amazing, I have loads of Enya’s music I find it so relaxing and soothing simply the best. But this song and the voice is out of this world.
The English lyrics are different from the ones I'm used to hearing, which is a little distracting. But so lovely! As if Enya could sing anything but. :-)
@wajutiem08 Yes its 18th century Latin translated by John Mason Neale, the original version began, 'Draw nigh draw nigh Immanuel, and was published in Medieval Hymns 1851, it was altered by the editors of the first edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern which was published in 1861. The Tune, Veni Immanuel is of French origin.

@Jesusisyhwh According to 'The Music of The Methodist Hymn Book (1933 publication) and Companion to Hymns & Psalms (1988 publication) The tune is 15th century and belonged to French Franciscan Nuns. Thanks Alan.
@ronnymatt81 no it is ENGLISH to LATIN. This 8TH century MOST SOLEMN ADVENT HYMN was ORIGINALLY in LATIN and then it was TRANSLATED into ENGLISH in the 19th century from its latin text "veni, veni emmanuel".
@armando1955ifyThe Catholic Church is NOT the oldest Christian Church. The Orthodox Church is. There were 5 main hubs to the church, & the "capital" of the church was Constantinople. No... you're wrong too. The oldest church preceded our modern institutions and classifications of Christianity. It began with the 12 men who walked and talked with Jesus Christ. It was no collection of doctrines or architecture-- it was Christ Himself.

I am a devout Christian, but my grandmother was Jewish and I did go to temple a lot as a younger man and this song has always touched my Jewish soul - it is such a Hebraic Christian song.
@jhr459 Totally concur. John 3:16 loosely says "God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son (Emanuel) so that none may perish but ALL have eternal life. " The "all" means even Osama Bin Laden and Hitler. All.
@oAndJoegottago They may be resurrected from the dead, but they won't share eternal life with those that overcame the world through Christ Jesus. They will get to share outer darkness with Lucifer their Prince of Darkness in Hades.
@matteach2 agree. What is meant by that verse is everyone gets a chance to make the choice, but once you die, it's done. If you surrender your life to Jesus, you have eternal life. If you don't, you lose the gift. Pretty much assured that Osama and Hitler will be in the "smoking section" for eternity.
@oAndJoegottago For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever BELIVES in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Key words WHOEVER BELIVES. Everybody doesn't believe Jesus to be messiah. Osama was a Muslim therefore he didn't believe Jesus to be God's son. Hitler obviously didn't know God, if he had, he would not have been responsible for 6 million Jews murdered.
@1niftyjay Hi its not Irish Veni Immanuel is of French origin and Silent Night is of Austrian origin, written by an Austrian priest, Joseph Mohr for Christmas 1818.It was originally translated as Still the Night Holy the Night, then altered in 1927 to Silent Night Holy Night. Thanks Alan.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (Dec. 18, Advent 4), we sang this our opening hymn. It is #257 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
@digomonsterz The words are of French origin and the tune was 'contributed' to the words by Thomas Helmore in 1856. (According to the Companion to Hymns & Psalms.) Thanks Alan.
Immensely beautiful song, her voice and tone, the power of this song; goes even far beyond my atheism. Perhaps other should listen more with their ears and hearts, than with their discriminatory minds; maybe then they'll listen the same song I did.
Our congregation sings this in church sometimes. It is very magical, I sometimes just close my eyes and listen to the beautiful echoes of our voices singing this song. Enya sings this so beautifully, she captures the magic and breathes it out when she sings this.
@Sportymike good. people need to stop being so hateful and start practicing religious tolerance. i'm tired of youtube being a forum for such ridiculous arguing
@Soccerplayer04071 Why are you listening to a Christian song if you think this is all in our heads?
And it's not just a BOOK, it's a first hand account of happenings from the biblical era. The people who wrote it did not belong in an assylum, as you probably are thinking, as with writers of the torah and other holy books of other religions.
Maybe you belog in an assylum, since you think it's a good idea to post horrible things on a holy song.
@Soccerplayer04071 You don't understand religion at all then. I get frustrated with the church, but God is always with us. We should live as Jesus did, seeking people like you to help you understand that he is real, in our heart always. I do not go to church, and I am far from perfect, but none of us are free from sin, and there is no sin greater than another.
@Soccerplayer04071 hi you .....just open your heart and you will be in peace...its no question of religion or any written papers, its the answer if the heart which tells you the truth......love, GOD IS....you will never find him on papers or pictures....HE its there for you IN you and thetas private.....I do wish you a beautiful mind.....LOVE IS!
@Soccerplayer04071 you can no disporve something is not there soly bc you can not see it can you see air no but you "belive" its there and also restoring to swears to get see your point of view is a sad and point less and also if yoou dont like what mjcpirate0025 is seeing then dont read comments under songs that are holy in naturl or hymls just a though
, and Someday will answer "YES!"--at His Parousia (2nd Coming). Thus, the refrain of the hymn (which is not part of the liturgical antiphons): Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel (slightly different version Enya sings here). That is to say, simply, "Amen.--Yea, yea, It shall be so!"
The melody fits the attitude of mournful, penitent prayer.
Yo, people, this hymn is based on the great '"O Antiphons", used with the singing of the Magnificat at Vespers on the last 7 days before Christmas (Eve--the Festival of the Nativity of our Lord begins at sundown the 24th, so the Vespers of the 24th is the first service of Christmas itself). The antiphons are profound prayers of *Advent*--begging our Lord to come and be "Emmanuel"--God [in the flesh] with us, prayers He has already answered "Yes!", and still answers the same through Word and Sac
Chilling, haunting, absolutely breath taking. Emanuel (God with us). He is the new born King...He is the Christ, The Son of the Living God. May your lives be a dedication to the Lord. Thank you for sharing this exhilarating song/music....Shalom.
I hope to the spirits that it snows this year. Because when it does, I'll walk outside and listen to this hauntingly beautiful music as the snowflakes dance around me, in the unearthly silence.
Just because I'm an atheist bent on steering humanity away from the evils of religion doesn't mean I can't enjoy good music. I love Enya songs and Latin songs. It's a shame Latin is a dead language.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (Dec. 18, Advent 4), we sang this our opening hymn. It is #257 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

This is a Latin hymn of the ninth century the Gregorian melody.
digomonsterz 1 month ago
@digomonsterz The words are of French origin and the tune was 'contributed' to the words by Thomas Helmore in 1856. (According to the Companion to Hymns & Psalms.) Thanks Alan.

I am an atheist, but as long as god can inspire this kind of music I don't find religion as useless as before.

Maybe you belog in an assylum, since you think it's a good idea to post horrible things on a holy song.
xxXphishtacoXxx 1 month ago
@Soccerplayer04071 You don't understand religion at all then. I get frustrated with the church, but God is always with us. We should live as Jesus did, seeking people like you to help you understand that he is real, in our heart always. I do not go to church, and I am far from perfect, but none of us are free from sin, and there is no sin greater than another.

WHY IS THE BIBLE REWRITTEN IN ALMOST EVERY 2 YEARS?
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE CHRISTAMAS?
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE EASTER?
WHY DO WE HAVE CATACOMBS?
WHY THE CHURCH EXIT SINCE THE FIRST ERAS?
WHY DO WE DISCOVER ANCIENT SCROLLS TELLING THAT GOD EXISTS?
WHY DONT YOU SHUT UP AND THINK FOR A SECOND BEFORE SAYING STUPID THINGS???
THINK!!!AND ASK YOURSELF WHY ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS BELIEVED IN GOD!AND WHY WE STILL BELIEVE!

, and Someday will answer "YES!"--at His Parousia (2nd Coming).
DRM2193 1 month ago
Yo, people, this hymn is based on the great '"O Antiphons", used with the singing of the Magnificat at Vespers on the last 7 days before Christmas (Eve--the Festival of the Nativity of our Lord begins at sundown the 24th, so the Vespers of the 24th is the first service of Christmas itself). The antiphons are profound prayers of *Advent*--begging our Lord to come and be "Emmanuel"--God [in the flesh] with us, prayers He has already answered "Yes!", and still answers the same through Word and Sac
