  • I finished something similar to this at OGC yesterday. Basically, I just went north-south and put my head to the mat instead of sitting up like that. Works too.

  • @ChandlerDonati Dude, I do the choke the same way you described, by turning north-south and planting my head to the ground and sometimes tripod-ing. Any idea what the choke is called? I know there's a clip of that version online.

  • gayest submission ever

  • this is falcatrua

  • note to self dont hold this for 5minutes this time LOL

  • Cant wait to try this!

  • This Is Forbidden In some Competitions though... XD

  • @chavamma What competitions?

  • @HBwhitebeltninja Many, depending In what state your in and what you're competeing in, they've different tournament rules. Ie: Can't hold same side of your gi or opponents for 5 seconds. It's just one of many.

  • @chavamma That rule is mainly used in Judo competitions though from what I've seen.

  • This is about to become my new favorite choke.

  • Jean Jaques a true legend!!!!

  • He is a great teaher. Very good at explaining details of techniques...

That is a great choke...I land it quite often.

  • NICE!

  • best teacher ever

  • Nice technique. Very useful. Thanks

  • I loved it.

  • so its the knee in the throat??

  • nop

  • In the last 3 seconds he says "It's my shin and the gi, right here"

  • Love this choke! If the guy is resisting, its still distracts him so much you can just hop to mount. Try it out

  • vicious choke

  • it looks like a nice choke, I'm going to try it tommorrow

  • if you can get your gi lapel around his neck, the "ninja" by shaolin is a sweet finish, look it up.

  • Well in place it looks like an effective gi choke, but to get all the way to the finishing 'position'/'hold'? It looks like you would have to have a bit of luck to get there... I'll just have to try it for myself, won't I.

  • I am a purple belt bjj, and I do a lot of no gi normally, but I threw my gi on tonight and truthfully one thing about bjj is being able to come at an opponent from unexpected angles, and unexpected ways. Like they say in boxing it was the punch you didn't see that knocked you out. I think grapping your own gi is fine, because it is unexpected, or using your own gi to pin a body part is also very effective. Actually the ezekiel choke requires no use of their gi, and it is a very basic choke.

  • @nhbgryphon My lil' brother loves the nogi ezekial, he just grips his forearms and he's good at making it work. I personally love the nogi bat choke from side control .. Gable grip and pull one elbow down and one up and get the tap.

  • clever technique. I'll have to try that.

  • Clever, but I'm not a big fan of this. How much further can you go with the usage of your clothing? I wouldn't call it cheating, but if this is allowed you can do about anything - Can you untie your belt as well and make a snare too? If not, why?

  • You can't untie your belt and "hitman" choke him. However, if your belt is still attached to your body you can use it to choke your opponent. Anytime your Gi/Belt is attached to you (like Jean Jacques has his gi jacket on him here), it can be used against your opponent to hold and/or submit them.

  • I have never seen this kind of choke used in competition, in neither bjj or 'regular' jiu-jitsu. Must be a reason for that?

  • Using the Gi is a part of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. And the guy below me summed it up, you cant take off you belt and lynch somebody.

  • It's not even close to cheating. Using your gi to choke someone is regular technique.

  • Pulling your gi out of your belt like that is too much of a modification of the clothing, for my taste. You're wearing a gi to wear and grabbing it, not taking it off. Choking your opponent with his own gi is much more natural I think.

However, just how often do you see someone (tori) choking an opponent (uke) with his (tori's) own gi? I never do, and I've watched many bjj matches. I still think there are good reasons for that.

  • what reason do you think that is? i see people do this stuff quite often. where do you train?

  • The potential reason I can come up with is that it seems a bit complicated to succeed with this (this kind of usage of your own gi), in action. Also, pulling the opponent's gi out a bit is generally a normal move, but pulling your own out looks a bit weird. I know I would feel uncomfortable undoing mine, especially to a crowd (in competition)! :)

I train Dokan Ryu Jiu Jitsu, which is a relatively sparring orientated style. Not BJJ, but I'm pretty interested in the newasa part. And you?

  • it might also be because pulling your own gi out like this could endager yourself also. if your opponent manages to grab your gi you have just released for them then they can counter. i think thats probably one of the main issues with this.

  • There are no real counters from the bottom position there. The guy MUST escape side control before the gi even becomes a danger to the man performing the choke. I don't see a problem here. Remember this isn't just a sport, it's self defense, it's nice to have this up your sleeve, or should I say, in your lapel? I crack myself up. Anyway, anyone who thinks gi chokes are not used in real life, I beg to differ.

  • ive used a similar gi choke a few times (by feeding it up with my mouth to the hand behind the head) can be very effective as an option against someone who doesnt see it coming.

  • watch my vids... I won a championship with almost the same choke!!

  • i had that done to me it hurt

  • good choke!! awesome

  • Thanks guys...I'll be signing back up real soon
