  • It's weird but it looks just like a sun dew plant which is also carnivorous. It uses those clear water droplets which are in fact sticky to traps insects.

  • @kodyperry13 no. Dont use humus for your plant. Hymus is Compost. It is a fertilizer and a must not for a VFT

  • That was a sundew. Keep it in another pot. And the same thing with your VFT. It has sticky liquid on its hair to trap insects. To care for it take it after about 2-3 weeks and transfer to another pot. Then put in a mixture of peat moss and pearlite and transfer it there. Same amount of sunlight. In winter months do the same thing to hibernate it.

  • You will notice it going dormant the larger traps and leaves will start to die off about now and will be replaced with smaller leaves and traps while they are dormant you dont have to keep there as moist but never let it dry out! when it is dormant stick it on a window sill that gets sunlight dont put them below 40 degrees! and in the summer do not let temp exceed 90 if it does out in shade!

  • It depends on if the plant wants to go dormant.

  • if i plant a venus fly trap from seed in the winteer will it have a dormancy period ??? PLEASE ANSWER!!! =)

  • I am using peat humus for soil if i am using a soil that will kill my plant please tell me!

  • Some of my traps are dying off i think this normal for dormancy but not sure. i am using distilled water for my watering and and they got some rain water last week. I am noticing a baby trap just getting it teeth also. I have another fly trap that has 3 traps and is very small it is not catching any flies and will not close when something is in trap. Im wondering if i should plant all my traps together. Please comment on what i should do!

  • HEY that thing that growing is a nother type of carnivorous plant look it up theres about three differnt kind of venus fly traps

  • The thing growing under is an other Carnivorous plant known as (drosera specie) aka octupus plant you luck got 2 4 1 #FTW !

  • 11 ppl did not follow this care tip and there fly trap died.

  • Can I just take a moss from outside and just rinse it out and apply to it?. Please reply back

  • Hi can I just apply moss from outside and rinse it out then apply to it

  • ummmmm im using bottled water it is kirland signature premium drinking water is that ok plz plz respond thank you :)

  • the other plant is another type of fly trap sometimes known as an octopus plant, looks like u got a 2 for 1!!

  • Strphen hawking?

  • how deep should i plant VFT seeds

  • thanks ! you really hepled me :)

    but i have 1 Q..

i read somewhere that if u wont feed ur VFT it will grow more traps..

but here, i can see that after u feed it, 3 more traps grew..

so my Q is : if you feed the VFT more often.. it will grow more traps ?

    (sorry for my bad english)

  • @im18plusok dont stop feeding theVFT i tried it if you do it dies:(

  • how long will the trap stay closed while digesting a bug

    Plz respond and thank you

  • @jaredclark22 It varies mate.. Depending on the size of the bug and the size of the trap thats eating, anything between 3 days to a week and a bit :)

  • I'm pretty sure that is a sun-dew. A sun-dew is another type of carnivorous plant. I think there is a symbiotic relationship between your VFT and sun-dew. Sun-dew gives off an odor that attracts insects, so your VFT is benefiting. You're lucky that a sun-dew is growing there. :D

  • @setheries Cheers for the confirmation, hope you enjoyed my video, I have now updated the end to let people know what the mysterious plant was.

  • YUM YUM

This video told me more than any other video about VFTs on YouTube... Really great video!

  • @STFUbelgium Glad you enjoyed :)

  • @sparko51

    again, Thanks, bro :)

  • um help me how do i feed it

do i catch the flies or does it do that its self

what if it doesnt catch a fly! :O

  • @PebbleBinder it will catch it's own, and can go without catching any for quite a while, so don't worry, but feeding a woodlouse to it once a week won't hurt.. Thats what I've always done, they love them yummy :)

  • um help me how do i feed it

do i catch the flies or does it do that its self

  • i need help my venus fly trap is growing smaller and smaller traps every week they are very little plz i need help

  • can i leave this plant outside in freezing soil at -20 C ?

  • @victorcelmare course ya can

and guess what it can fly!

  • I think that's a sundew plant growing.

  • Oh my gosh! A sundew plant!

  • looks like one of those sticky plants. maybe got mixed in with the venus flytrap. has the drops of sticky stuff that insects stick to then the plant absorbs it on the outside.

  • lol yeah that's the drosera that's growing. Guess you lucked out with some sundew plants!

  • i have 2 plants (actually one as i believe theyre connected by the roots) but they have 20+ traps, i keep them all closed at once so it can get its maximum amount of nutrients. If you do that you can get a new trap to form fully from sprouting to opening its trap in about a week! also that plant you saw in there with your venus flytrap was a sundew plant, another carnivorous plant. These mature in about a year and are very beautiful. Grats on a free plant!

  • ok wow im glad to know moss endicates healthy conditions becus mine is growing moss and i thought it was a bad thing but now i knw its not thank you very much

  • I've got mine all set up, living in a nice plate of water and everything, and I fed it last week, but...it opened it's mouth again today, and I noticed a big chunk of the bug (either that the whole bug, not sure; it's not fully open yet) was still in there. :/ Isn't the bug supposed to be completely gone?

  • its too fussy about soil,water,weather conditions,food,sunlight

  • Not listening to a robot for 5 minutes.

  • @Amcacs5654 yeah, dead venus flytraps are loads of fun there amcacs! really worth it huh? :)

  • i heard that vft have flowers in which seeds grow in

  • How to make Venus Flytrap traps turn red?

  • @Donciulis they turn red on the inside of the trap if they recieve alot of sunlight. Try keeping it outside in a very well lit area or under some t-5 fluorescent bulbs. 12-14 hours is a good amount of light

  • it is a sun due

  • damn, that is not moss, that is a Drosera Capensis (cape sundew), another kind of carnivorous plant!

    google it!

  • i think those two watever thing is some kind of strange but i dont have them when i grow my own vft.

  • I have a very healthy flytrap which seems to have sent up a flower shoot from the middle the stalk is about 6 inches long and has a little tight ball on top. Has anyone else seen this on their plant? Also my plant seems to rarely catch flies although I do think it attracts them!!

  • hey, for the thing growing, its a sundew. grow it the same as vft and it will be fine

  • i think it growing a dick dud

  • gay voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That plant is the Sundew (Drosera) plant. It's pretty cool it's a canivorous plant that attracts pray and then captures them with the resinous coating on its hairs. The insect will hit other hairs during it's struggle for release, and get stuck even moreso. Lots of info on them out there on the net!

  • the other plant is another type of carviverus plant. it uses sticky nekter to catch food anb wraps around it to digest it. it then open again to catch more food.

  • Don't put your plant in the frigde even though its dormant its still photosynthesizing for its spring growth spurt

  • that is moss bro

  • but i growing some

  • at green thing kills your plant give it water and it would hopefully go so for your info

  • no, that is moss, which is very important for your plant to live

  • It is a Sundew plant (Carnivorous)

I have one growing next to my VFT too.

  • that is a sundew plant : ) it is another carnivorous plant!

  • maybe

  • can u still get venus fly traps? if so then please tell me where

  • safeway lol

  • E-bay

  • 99 cent stores (california) often has them. Osh (gardening) and even home depot. you can also order them online.

  • Your VFT brought a friend! xDD they are both carniverouse plants, That ones got sticky dew on it to trap bugs

  • could be fungus I jus watched some utube videos bugs can transmit diseases? But i think it's fungus they have some tablets u mix in wit water and u spray it on the plant and it should go away

  • chemicals kill venus flytraps. they are more sensitive than most plants

  • I had similar plant as at the end of the video. You have two carnivrous plants at the same place :)

  • thay look like another tipe of trap .. dont worrie thay wont be harmfull to your VFT just re plant them in simmalar earth like your trap ans watch them grow .. thay mostlikly hitched a ride .. good find

  • thats a sundew. in the end a different carnivores plant the seeds must of flew in the pot the the plant store

  • these little two things at the end looks like Drosera but I'm not sure

  • I bought 2 of these plants, and have been giving them tap water, because I didn't know! One of them has some of the traps turning black, but the other one has the traps all the way opened now, almost inverted, and seem to be unresponsive to touch. Any info would be helpful! Thanks for the video, too!

  • firstly, why are you touching the plant? okay, to help the plant, simply flush it very well with distilled water and it should be fine. also is your plant getting dormancy? is it getting enough light? for more help, please email me (i would be glad to help a fellow flytrap owner) and also, for beginners, i recommend sundews, they are much less hard to take care of, and some dont even need dormant! (plus they look plain out cool!!!!!)

  • I wasn't touching the plant; the insects were. They were crawling on it and the plant had become completely unresponsive. Thanks for your offer to help, but my plants died 7 months ago, soon after I wrote the comment that you responded to. I think I'll try a sundew later, though. I'll keep you in mind for advice. Thanks.

  • why do you put yr venus fly trap in the fridge?

  • hello, i love the advise of how to make a halthy VFT.but i have a ?.if there is some sunlight in my house and my FT does not get enoght sunlight, what lights should i by or use? and yes, those are just sundews dont worry about it. PLZ relpy ty

  • just put your plant outside, it will be alot healthier. and if you need any help caring with dormancy or anything just email me

  • where can I buy all of those stuff

  • Sorry for the delay mate, went to bed lol.. Your best bet is here on the net.. Either ebay, amazon or look around the various gardening centers that offer online shopping. Personally I would try ebay. Karl.

  • i know what the thing at the end is. it is ecsactoly as venus ply trap but the lines that sticking out of the plant is like glue, and every insect that flu on it it will be stuck and the plant will roll slowly on it. just search for planttraps

  • i found it, search for Carnivorous

  • @crossbones1100 flytrapstore com good plants and great prices.

  • what else shood i put in my pot besides moss?

  • Horticultural grade sand, such as silver sand, and horticultural grit. In the ratios Moss 50%, Sand 25% and Grit 25%. Karl.

  • but i looked on google and it sed u can use bottled water is that trew?

  • No that isn't true.. Because of the added chemicals we humans put in water to clean it i.e Chlorine etc, and the added minerals.. These are all toxins to the plant and they will eventually kill it.. It's easier than you think to collect rain water, the perfect liquid for these plants. Hope this helps. Karl

  • where can i buy moss?shood i put soil in it to? and if the pot is bigger will it grow better? and wen u buy 1 it comes with a plastic container shood u leev it in it

  • Firstly, I found ebay had a selection of the correct moss which is also pretty cheap.. Do not put normal garden soil in with this plant, due to its high nitrogen content, it would be like you drinking bleach. The pot not being big enough for the plants roots will eventually stunt its growth, so as the plant grows out to the edge of the pot, move it to a bigger home.. The plastic container would help keep in moisture which these plants love, so its a good idea, provided its large enough. Karl.

  • the little plant is the sundew and its stick olny to insect not humans

  • Thanks, I found that out eventually.. Nice little plant, even better that it was free =D .. Karl.

  • Hi i just bought a venus fly trap and i dont know what soil i should use i know now that i shouldent use tap water bekose it will kill it am saving up rain water before am going to plant the seeds but i dont know what soil to use should i go out to my local garden shop and buy some soil witch you use in normal plants ???

  • No. That'll kill it dead. Half of the soil should be peat moss, a fourth should be silver sand, and the rest should be horticultural grit. Look it up if you can't find any of these things.

  • SSXtrikE has hit the nail on the head. Karl.

  • The plant is a Drosera (capens or capens alata) in know that, because i have this plant, too. It is very helpfull for catching little (very little) insects, wich are incredibly catched by a venus fly trap

  • The plant you are asking about is definatly a sundew which is commonly mixed in accidently with live moss.

  • hi the plant u are confued about is also a carnivorous plant, im no expert but i saw it on this tv program and they catch insteccts becaue the stick little balls on the end are so stick it catches instects like a spiders web but i dont know how they digest them but thanks for the vid it helped alot.

  • One thing you should perhaps point out in this video... I was told to NEVER use tap water as is. I'd run the water through a filter first. Or boil it, but then obviously leave the water to cool down before using it to water your plant.

  • Boiling the water increases the concentration of the salts, and may temporarily malfunction any substances. Tap water can be used once in a long while, only in emergencies. Regular tap water usuage makes a buildup of salts and the nitrogen within the salts will kill it, so do not use tap water regularly. Anyways, NICE VIDEO! One Question, none of my traps open now, what should I do?

  • plenty of water, nutrients, and sun. Other than that, it needs time to open. Be patient.

  • That looks like sundew. I think OBSESTINKS is right.

  • umm.. that might be moss...that is very bad for the plant and can kill it..it might start to get deformed ect...the best thing i can say is cut the leaves off... wen it is a little bigger.. and u start to see a baby version.....take it out of the pot and ull see its a another plant...pot it in a different pot and...ummm.. dont let the moss get to close..=p..best of luck!! =]

  • thay look like sundues (another kind of carnivoris plant) if not thay may be the seeds

  • Hey does chrystal clear contain minerals?

  • well the part you said that stuff about the shoots you dont know about...im sure its bad it would be either a fungal infection or a pest infiltration reaction so either way its bad but until you know you should do nothing. Ask an expert search the web or just give it pest stuff(pest meicine) or fungal stuff(fungal medicine.

  • i just got my vft and how do i know when it needs to go dormant? thanks.

  • that thing is a sundew. you are lucky to have 2 carnivorous plants in one pot. there rare and cost like 15$!

    :P

  • WERE DO YOU BUY ONE

  • Hello, I'm French, and I've got 3 carnovorous plants.

I think I can answer to your question (something like "what is the baby plant in my pot?")

It's a baby "drosera", another kind of carnivorous plant !

    Maybe more especially "drosera capensis"

You're really lucky ! You have two differents species whereas you bought just one....

    Good luck !

    Bye

  • there the venus fly traps seeds

  • so sparko i got a venus fly trap from shoprite and none of the traps were closing was it stunned??? and where do i get some food for them

  • The same thing happens to me and my plant...im an expert but the only thing i dont know about the trap is why they do that.

  • thnks austo but i didnt stick my finger in the trap i used a toothpick

  • You really shouldnt do that, it takes the plants energy away and will sometimes cause that portion of the trap to die.

  • hey i got a venus fly trap from shop rite and none of the traps were closing on me does any 1 no why

  • Usually if the traps dont close it may be an indication they have been triggered without anything in the trap. Like someone triggering the trap with thier finger.

  • they are called sundews, a kind of carnivorous plant of the venus fly trap family

  • Those are sundews.I have some to growing with my vft and I separated them, mabye you should too.

  • thos are sundews

  • Couldn't you use distilled water if chemicals in tap are a problem?

  • i got one of these in the summer it started with about 6 traps now its got about 30,was just wondering should i put it in the fridge now for the winter ????

  • those little shoot thingies look like sundews

  • yes they are sundews. maybe some seeds were dropped into your pot accidently. be happy, now you got another kind of carnivore, why don't you put another vid of their size now?^^ I have 2 VFTs and 2 sundews, but mine are still babys...

  • if you use soil from your garden the trap dies ?...and i think they look like sundew plants :S

  • they're adapted to nutrient-lacking soil. that's why they adapted to their environment by finding another way to get nutrients...

  • yes i think it's drosera i was think to buy one of those but then i change my mind and bought venus fly trap.

  • That thing at the end of video seems a little Drosera. Anyway I'm not this good with this kind of plants. You'd better search on the internet a good way for taking that out and plant it again (maybe is better to wait until it will grow a little bit more).

    (sorry for the bad english!)

    Luca Dod3.

  • it looks to me like a form of meat eating plant i have a plant that looks like that one at the end probly some seed from a different plant at the company made its way in keep it it will catch bugs to

  • i agreee with stormfur they need humid air...also, are you sure you can't use tap water? mines on steroids or something because it grows new leaves every like...2 days and i've been using tap water ever since i got it =]

  • Ive had my vft for about 2 months now, and i think its gone into dormancy. skinny leaves and smaller traps. But there seems to be a root system starting to grow on top of the soil. now i kn0ow that they have very small root systems so im concerned abotu what this may be. any help would be greatly appreciated. great vid too.

  • I think that the tiny thing will grow into lots of stalks with red bulbs on it. If these bulbs are very sticky, then it is a sundew plant, another carnivorous plant that catches prey by luring with the sweet smelling bulbs and digesting it by pulling it in. It is pretty cool but I'm not sure if it will interrupt your VFT. :)

  • ahaha you're VFT's new plant is another type of carniverous plant. I don't know the name, but catches insects by releasing a sweet scent, and when the bug comes near, it gets stuck to the sticky balls on the ends of the plant's frongs. They digest the bug as well.

  • that stuff that you pointed out in the end is moss. It means that your soil is in good condition for growing your VFT ... considering that venus fly traps live in very poor soil conditions. hope this helped. :)

  • i had one for several weeks maby 2 to 3 months now and stil is alive and i live in Ventura california. it is very healthy and you should clip off the dead traps.

  • I'm sorry to bother you, but I noticed two things that I found...well, wrong.

First, I highly advise growing outdoors if possible. It's the best thing do to. If you HAVE to grow inside, you should use a small space and use some T8s fluorescent lights (and don't put them in bowls, they tolerate low humidity)

Second, you don't really need to put them in the frige unless you live lower than zone 7 probably.

How big is the Drosera Capensis (the shoot). AKA Cape Sundew. Octopus plant...pfft

  • I live in southern California, Chula vista to be exact. I'm asking if I should get this plant because in the video this person is recommending you don't use tap water or bottled water. And in southern Cal, it does not rain a lot :| Please help.

  • i had one for several weeks maby 2 to 3 months now and stil is alive and i live in Ventura california. it is very healthy and you should clip off the dead traps.

  • well, all you need to do with tap water is leave it sit somewhere for a couple days, and the chlorine will dissipate from it enough for it to have no effect on your plant. Or if you don't want to do that, you could get bottled spring water, just make sure it doesn't have any extra nutrients/additives in it.

  • those "roots" do you see the little hairs? if they grow red then its possible its an octopus plant. it wraps around mosquitos and fly etc. and kills its prey. devouring sometime after.

  • that little plant is another kind of bug eating plant if you look cloesly at it you will see small hairs that look to have a little drop of water on them whut happens is win i bug lands on it the little drop on the end of the hair trap it (think of it as fly-paper) and then the hairs suck the juice out of the bug. i have 3 difrent bug eating plants and i have one like that.

  • you acutlly can use dissled bottle water

  • them lil thingz ur growin r "sundew" another bug eating plant :D

  • ....and stored it on a shelf in my room. The instructions that came with it told me to do exactly that so i did. It has been 2-weeks now since i got it and nothing's happening, i is still just soil can anyone give me advice on what i haff to do to get it growing?

    PLEASE REPLY

  • Hi, Im sorry to burst your bubble, but if your growing a VFT from seed, you have a long wait ahead of you. From seed it can take a VFT between 4 and 12 weeks to show any sign of germination. But in the end, I believe it'll be worth your wait, best of luck, Karl.

  • okay thanx anyway, do'you reckon i shud take the plastic bag of and put it outside in sunlight??

  • Flytraps need lots of light, if you want to keep it inside it needs to be under fluorescent light (less than 12 inches from plant) or in a window that receives direct sun most of the day. If you do move it outside then yes, take the bag off or it will retain too much heat.

  • thanks for the tip:D

  • i'm trying to grow one i've had it for about two weeks now, i got a small pot and i put INsoil and put the seeds on top. i then put the pot on a saucer and i put like a lil bit of water on the saucer and put the pot on top daily. i kept it with a plastic bag over it.....

  • holy fck is dat steven hawkings! nah only jkin

  • It's not his voice. It's a voice from MAC laptops. It's a feature of mac's reading text with different voices.

  • ur voice is weird!! lol. but i love the video!!!

  • microsoft sam BEEOTCH

  • The tiny shoots are droseras (aka sundews;) they are carnivorous plants that use their sticky dew to catch bugs and slowly curl around them. They grow in moisture conditions that allow them to form the dewdrops that they need to catch the bugs.

  • Another comment said that the tiny shoots were drosera capensis, they are very hardy sundews. I have one and I think that it might be one.

  • that is a octopus palnt, another carnivore plant, i have one, science centers sell them

  • XxmastabuckxX was right, it is also a carnivorous plant. The dew on the end of the "teeth attract insects and when the come into contact, they curl inwards trapping the prey. Most of these carnivorous plants grow in the same area so it wouldn't be a surprise if two species ended up in the same pot. It is called Drosera capensis.

  • its also a trap but its like a plant with sticky bubbles on it, it catches flys with it , must have been a mostake of the seller

  • for me these little plants are drosera capensis..

  • those little shoot thingies look like sundews

  • this plant looks abit like fungus doesn't it?

  • idiots he dosent have throat cancer... everyones computer can talk like this if you know were to look.. just type in words and it says it.

  • LOL

  • In addition to pushing the boundaries of physics, Stephen Hawking also cares for venus fly traps..........

  • hahahah

  • Your voice scares me. You should have recorded when you have a clear throat instead of recording with a sore throat. And haha, the previous post under mine is really funny. Do you have throat cancer?

  • You find that funny? id bet my left bollock yr american! fruit cake!

  • Well, your wrong! I'm not american. The way the guys wrote it. If you get it, and think about it, its actually funny. But I still know that the voice is the result of the numerous computer edits.

  • Oh yeah, so you lost your bet... so the arrangements on receiving your left bullock, will you send it by post?

  • ...DO YOU HAVE THROAT CANCER

  • its asundew or peat a moss sprut

  • thank you!in our country the venus fly trap doesn't grows but this plant is quite interesting..

  • Your plants are too ugly..

But BTW: The little plants you shown at the end and you don't know what they are, they're also Carnivorous Plants, Sundews, you're lucky you have these too. It has some very strong sort of glue and if insects touch it they're trapped.

  • it takes 1 or 2 weeks for it to open i bought alot like 10of them and i got a box that says that it takes a wweek or 2 to open
