I don't know if a WW1 game would be much too exciting. Besides fighting, the harsh conditions in the trenches were also a major problem, so there would be a lot of sitting around, waiting for orders. The battles would be charging into enemy trenches with a rifle and bayonet, screaming. The main FPS genre is based on Guerrilla warfare. I think they should make atleast one really awesome WW1 game but don't get your hopes up.

A good developer can make any theatre of war interesting. I'd love to see a WW1 game. It's not all about the trenches and no man's land, either. You could have aerial battles, the Turkish campaign, tunneling missions under enemy lines, forest battles (like in The Last Battalion), etc. I'd buy a great WW1 FPS. Activision, are you listening?
Only the Western Front was largely static, but during 1916 the Entente DID make some serious progress into the German lines. The Germans were smart though and backed to a line which was easier to defend. The German 1918 Spring Offensive was also very mobile. The 100 day Offensive by the Entente was anything but static. Had the war gone on, Germany itself would have been invaded in 1919. That was the plan, but the armistice ended that.
I just wish that either CoD or MoH would release a game that's realistic in it's size and scope. I seriously doubt 4 men including yourself would be able to break through Omaha beach and take out an entire bunker yourself or land on Iwo Jima and claim mount surubachi with you and a half dozen men.

If you do flight sims check out the "Rise of Flight" game videos. The graphics are awesome. People are starting to make W W I documentaries with this game's captures. Check out "Rise of Flight The Death of the Red Baron". Pretty impressive stuff!

As such my concern with CoD doing W W I is that they may "jazz" it up the way they did with Black Ops. May be a great game but it "feels" more like a modern (read: mercenary ethic) cartoon version of the 1960's. Historical accuracy and atmosphere are every bit as important as game-play to this gamer.

@Zebred2001 it wouldn't work unless they made servers that can host hundreds of people simultaneously. the way trench warfar worked was mass-number pushes toward the forward trench. with the amount of people servers host now (no more than 30-40 on average) it wouldn't be the sort of game you would invision. with 50 on each team - and DM style respawn it could be a game.

There was nothing remotely entertaining about World War 1. There is no way you would want to relive it-it wasn't like 'call of duty', your great great grandfather certainly wouldn't approve of your naive attitude to it. Read Sassoon or Wilfred Owen, they will show you how 'bad' it was. Shellshock, the futile attack methods ending in slaughter, the rotting corpses of your friends that you would have to live and sleep next to day and night ...you would want to 'play' that?
@Slypaperclips WW2 was far worse, since the brits and americans started mass bombing cities and culminated in 2 nukes being dropped on Japan. Because of this the total dead was even worse than in WW1. Certainly no war games should glorify this insanity, but hey its the world we live in, you shouldn't be surprised.

Infinity Ward? Even they can't change history. Think about what happened in WW1. Not a lot of variation, in any way. You'd have the same gun all of the time, and all of the level'd be basically identical. Not to mention unless they're planning on skipping 7/8ths of the war, your character should end up dead at the end of every fight.
Not to mention that American's only turned up very late in things, and American's want to play as Americans.
A world war 1 game would be great. All the pioneerin technology of the day such as the BAR, an ancestor 2 the MP40, early tanks and planes, an early german night viseon sniper scope, countless shotguns. Think, all the bold action rifles of cod WaW (excluding ptrs) were in WWI. Also, they could put USA in, because they had a war during the first half of WWI with, i think, mexico
USA only turned up right at the end. The thing with mexico was a plot. The Axis powers offered Arkansas, Texas, and the other section that used to be Mexico's terrotory back in return for support, Mexico turned them down.
Any all of this technology doesn't mean much. Bolt Action Rifle A is used pretty much the same as Bolt Action Rifle B. For every 1 other gun, you'd have 100 einfeilds. There's very little gameplay difference.

@rangepawner4 tanks gas and flamethrowers were pretty much invented in world war 1. they called flamethrowers 'liquid fire'. tanks were pioneered by the Brit's to break the stalemate of trench warfare. gas, was the most terrifying new weapon which, if my history is correct, my great great grandpa died of.

I would like to play a first world war game it would be ace ma great great grandfather faught and died for my rights on flanders fields i would love to relive the battles of ww1 one of baddest wars look it up and learn how bad they were

There was nothing remotely entertaining about World War 1. There is no way you would want to relive it-it wasn't like 'call of duty', your great great grandfather certainly wouldn't approve of your naive attitude to it. Read Sassoon or Wilfred Owen, they will show you how 'bad' it was. Shellshock, the futile attack methods ending in slaughter, the rotting corpses of your friends that you would have to live and sleep next to day and night ...you would want to 'play' that?

@Slypaperclips WW2 was far worse, since the brits and americans started mass bombing cities and culminated in 2 nukes being dropped on Japan. Because of this the total dead was even worse than in WW1. Certainly no war games should glorify this insanity, but hey its the world we live in, you shouldn't be surprised.

@sid8980 yes I know but World War 1 involved barely any 'running and gunning', it was just a slaughter, whereas it's more easy to make a realistic WW2 game.

How can ww1 have been boring? From what I've learned in school and on my own ww1 was damn brutal possibly more so than ww2. You'd be lucky to not find your self in a trench full of blood,rain water,mud and bodies.

world war 1? are you insane? all that world war 1 was, was just people sitting in trenches waiting for the other group to run in and try to kill them, hence the most boring game in the world. i'm sure that it would be very graphic, but i'm also sure that you'll be tired of the same old crap. games are games buddy

well if it involved a bit of histry ad true condition itl be awesome. just imagine germans runing across no mans land with bombing shlls and its all chaos, u go on the old machine gun and u shoot the shit out of everyone. if it involves a good, sad story then the game will be really good

Infinity Ward? Even they can't change history. Think about what happened in WW1. Not a lot of variation, in any way. You'd have the same gun all of the time, and all of the level'd be basically identical. Not to mention unless they're planning on skipping 7/8ths of the war, your character should end up dead at the end of every fight.
Not to mention that American's only turned up very late in things, and American's want to play as Americans.

A world war 1 game would be great. All the pioneerin technology of the day such as the BAR, an ancestor 2 the MP40, early tanks and planes, an early german night viseon sniper scope, countless shotguns. Think, all the bold action rifles of cod WaW (excluding ptrs) were in WWI. Also, they could put USA in, because they had a war during the first half of WWI with, i think, mexico

USA only turned up right at the end. The thing with mexico was a plot. The Axis powers offered Arkansas, Texas, and the other section that used to be Mexico's terrotory back in return for support, Mexico turned them down.
Any all of this technology doesn't mean much. Bolt Action Rifle A is used pretty much the same as Bolt Action Rifle B. For every 1 other gun, you'd have 100 einfeilds. There's very little gameplay difference.
The missions'd be very repetitive, as WW1 was.

Sure, there would nearly be as many weapons as WW2, but WW2 is boring and we've had too much of it.WW1 would be even more awful, more modern games I say.

Maybe. WW2 has definetly been done to death, and wannabe-hardcore modern warfare stuff is getting like that as well. Way to many games catering to the armchair operators who want to feel badass. Screw realism, lets get some decent game design and difficulty levels back. Tribes, TF2, and Quake 3 all the way.

@rangepawner4 tanks gas and flamethrowers were pretty much invented in world war 1. they called flamethrowers 'liquid fire'. tanks were pioneered by the Brit's to break the stalemate of trench warfare. gas, was the most terrifying new weapon which, if my history is correct, my great great grandpa died of.

u know, the only WW1 game i played was the darkest of days,it wasent completly WW1 because u would transport from certury to decad practicly in the midel of every mission and sometimes a dude would give u a gun that is in are time. I remember I was playing a level at the time of B.C I think and i found a M16. the every one was saying WAT KND OF WEPON IS THAT!!!!!! IT WAS REALLY FUNNY.
