The word "faggot", regardless of what it means to anyone, personally, is almost always attached to violence- even when that violence is implied and not actually physical. Even when people say it out of pure ignorance, they are using it BECAUSE they are homophobic. Most ignorant people have the basic understanding that something is "faggy" because it is gay-like and therefore bad. Free Speech does not cover someone's "right" to violate another human's right to exist.

I think as long as we have people we'll have degrading terms used to refer to others. I've lived long enough where I now see that words like fag, nigger, dyke etc., are used by people who feel insecure. They use these disparaging words to make themselves feel better about who they are. The word fag is used as a disparaging term for a homosexual man. Sounds ridiculous to me, actually all profanity sounds silly to me but sadly I think I will not live to see those terms a thing of the past.

Hmmm...interesting. It's one of those issues where do we take a word that is used to degrade us and make it a positive term? I mean I went to a "Queer Youth Lobby Day" when I was a kid in California. I know some who use the "F" word as a term of endearment. *shrug*
