I know a few of you are doubting the authenticity of this recording, but based on the phrasing and tone, this is definitely early Metheny. Listen to the early ECM Gary Burton recordings with Pat and Mick Goodrick, and you'll hear what I mean. If this was indeed recorded in 1974, Pat would have been 20. His playing at the time wasn't completely polished, which may be why it feels like something is lacking. But for a kid of his age, it's pretty damn good.
@TheRealKurtJames Quite true. Music education is much more effective and streamlined than it was 30 years ago. I have a lot of students who are just out of college, and many of them majored in music. I'm only 5 years older than these students, and I have a lot of experience, but I tell you, I have a damn hard time keeping up in the technique department. My heart sinks every time someone wants to learn sweep picking!
@TheRealKurtJames The problem though is that young people are way to focused on technique. Shredding, tapping, sweeping, etc, have become extremely boring to me and are not really impressive anymore. That's why this early Metheny recording is a lot more appealing to me than, let's say, Malmsteen. Sure, 20 year old today could play circles around 20 year old Metheny, but I doubt that most of them could write a piece like this.
Bien sur que ce n'est pas une vidéo , a ma connaissanse en 1974 il n"y avait pas encore de camescope, mais je suis deja bien heureux d'avoir ce document en audio
Pooh's Pub! I remember that place!... Maaannn, I haven't heard that name since the early 80s when I was living in Boston... I just got hit with a flood of memories, and all of them good... except the massive cockroaches :)
Thanks so much!Pooh's Pub!! I gigged there in '76-80 while @Berklee.This is the sh&t!These are the cats!Do you have more? What a great trio and record Bright Size...! Thank you again!!
I'm not entirely convinced this is for real. I could be wrong of course. It just sounds like something is missing.......it doesn't feel alive or authentic.
i heard somewhere that the cd version was a little disappointing on their part now i understand why they said their live versions were at times better this is good do you have this on cd?
Merci pour le commentaire et des moments comme ça je les partages avec grand plaisir , j'ai moi même attendu très longtemps avant d'avoir l'enregistrement j'en rêvais ,donc j'aime en faire profiter
You can find this tune on "Bright Size life" (ECM, 1976). Here, it's a live "cover" recorded at club Zircon (Boston or Somerville ???) in june 1974. I don't know if a "bootleg" record exists of this concert.
Merci, Monsieur "Nono" de m'avoir fait découvrir cette merveilleuse version que je ne connaissais pas. L'as-tu trouvé sur un album du commerce ou c'est un truc qui circule "entre musiciens" ?
Thanks So Much! Been wanting to hear this for so long. I think from Pooh's Pub. While attending Berklee School of Music these tapes were legendary! Wonderful thanks for sharing.
This is a trip to hear! He was probably about 18 at the time of this recording, so he'd been playing for 4 years or so - and already sounding completely unique. Also cool to hear jaco at this point too.
Merci. Metheny's voicings are out of this world. Impro totale. Quel concert cela a du etre!

@daschwarjazz Actually, I was being facetious! This composition and its interpretation are among the greatest ever recorded, regardless of age.
Don't be afraid of all that shredding B.S. These guys ruled!....unsurpassed...

Yes I have 2 concerts " live? Zircon Boston 1974 and live Pooh' S Pub 1974 7 titles and the other 10 titles
nono83666 2 years ago
It's no rehearsal - it's a gig. Those people clapping at the end give it away.

Excellent find - very enjoyable. Thanks. I wonder if any other rehearsal takes exist, like Are You Going with Me, for instance...

Nice find, nono...yes, it's a rehearsal recording for the album Bright Size Life. Great stuff!

It's quite inferior for those famous musicians. But if it's made by the amateurs, nice listening.

Que j'aimerai bien jouer au moins comme cela
nono83666 2 years ago
Maybe they are just rehearsing or trying new things.
The phrasing is quite pat metheny to me.
Remember, its the 70's, they must have still been kids and just started out at the time; they don't play as well as they are now.
