Several years ago, my husbands band warmed REO up in Wisconsin. My sister and I had backstage passes. When REO showed up in their limo, their bouncers came over to us and said the band would not get out until we left the stage area...serious...They have to remember who bought their albums and put them where they were...
Bruce Hall's masterpiece here. He wrote it, lead vocals on the studio album and in concert. In early 1973, I bought both albums at once - REO SPEEDWAGON and the best rock album of all time, REO TWO. Just 16 songs. Gary did both albums. Kevin did TWO and created HIS masterpieces and bolted. Didn't see him perform live until 1976 when he returned better than ever. ALL lineups from 1971-2011 are WORLD CLASS musicians, but many fans dislike the songs after 1982. Those first 16 may be all we need.
my hometown band... urbana,il. they used to practise in a shop on lincoln ave. next door was a fire house with an old reo firetruck nicknamed the speedwagon. hence r. e. o. speedwagon
I remember hearing Bruce Hall (the song writer and bass player for REO) do this song with the Jesse Ross Band at the Red Lion in Champaign before he joined REO. They also performed his song, Mid-State Illinois Blues, a much better song in my opinion that REO never screwed up by re-arranging it,.
I grew up in Peoria Illinois and I know Gary Richrath and his sister and his mom. They are normal people that loves to do what they do best. Gary is a very accomplished guitarist and even thougfh some members may be gay...what the hell, you've got a us senator posting on twitter and not even getting arrested, had been one of us we would be on the sex register...for life..screw this country and all you who are hypocrites
@MH88881 Hey there - - - I'm a big Gary Richrath fan, alot having to do with the other-wordly monster riffs rules on B.O.T.R.A. ... *I was just wondering: How is Gary R. nowadays? Is he still playing or producing any music at all? I had read somewhere that he was experiencing some health / personal problems which kept him from ever re-joining with his old bandmates in REO. *Could u give me any update / info on his present activity? That would be great. Thanks! J.H.
@MH88881 I grew up there, too. Actually, Gary was from EP and Eric,, his kid,, was a great guy, too! My sis went to school with Gary, I went to school with Eric.
I don't think anyone in REO is gay(literally)....I read that Neil Doughty is the only remaining origional member of the band. Can anyone confirm this?
Cronin is a total "jerk" for kicking Gary out. The only way for REO to return to their glory days of rock royalty is to let Gary rejoin the group which Cronin has refused to do.REO "WAS" ROCK!!! Now REO is just another 3rd rate washed up band living on the glamour of the Richrath era. Cronin, your glory days are OVER.
dlew71662, that is the BEST summation of the current state of REO that I have ever heard. It is most assuredly a crumbled shell of it's former self without the "R". Come out of hiding Gary.

@beyondtheveilofdeath My favorite song from REO as well. Richrath and Cronin had genuine chemistry majic, it was evident on all the songs they co-wrote and performed before the pop-glam mode kicked in in the 80's. Too bad they parted ways, would love to see Gary back with the band. It probably needs to happen for REO to ever get back on track, even though I think their current guitarist is great. Just with Richrath there was a balance that does not exist now.

Its not even a contest, Mustangs could talk that shit ass camaro anyday. Have u seen the new camaros, the front looks like a fuckin teepe. THE BEST CAR EVER : MUSTANG SHELBY, camaros suck balls
at 2:18 - 2:22 looks like he was hittin the toots a little hard before the show... saw these guys dozen? times, always rocked , saw them in tiny place in phoenix, then couple years later at a show in L.A. at the Coliseum - with Cheap Trix, BlackSabbath (and it stormed and was lightning just as Sabbath came on-so bitchin dude) and who else ??? either way those shows were all amazing, everytime you went to see a band back then you were blown away. they'd be your favorite til next band showed up!!
Believe it or not, I'm listening to this on the very same 1968 vintage Packard-Bell stereo I heard this on for the very first time...the stereo sounds better than the Bose surround sound system I bought two years ago, at least on the pre-1985 stuff. Too bad the lead singer of REO was such an asshole. The band was fantastic!
Saw these guys many times. Very professional, great sound. Saw them around "69" or "70" in Marion , Ohio, at a movie theater. The crowd crashed the doors , REO tore the place up. you knew they were going to be around for awhile. Our luck.
like I said, if it was not for the Mustang, then you would not have the shibox camaro, ...and stop saying faggot, I dont want to hear about your personel life.
camaros are for guys hung like a flea & fat girls.
Hey xoffie that's Gary Richrath who made that intro riff on "Back on the Road Again" from Reo's "Nine Lives" album. Yea i remember when Jackson's "Beat It" came out in 83, thinking Eddie Van Halen copied Gary's riff from BOTRA. You got a good ear for music to mention that.
after joining YouTube had this tune in my head for ages but couldn't remember who sang it. Good old YouTube came up trumps again. Loved the riff an guitar solo. Great to dance an headbang to lol.
Hey, I once heard a song called "Back on the Road". I'm searching that song but I don't know the band's name... They wearing white suits and the singer had a silver face(mask or make-up). Does anyone know this band? Please reply!
I saw Reo with Styx and Def Leppard in Atlantic City and they were all amazing! Can't wait to see them again!Bruce Hall was actually in the waiting area with us!
REO is gonna be at the Zoo Ampitheatre on Mothers Day and I'm taking my Moma. She enjoys REO. She took me and some friends to see them about 30 years ago when we were young teens and just loved them. That's where I met my wife to be, now I mean. She really loves this song, hope they do it.
I think thats the greatest guitar riff ever- the dunt donnu dunn nu. The guitar you first hear at the beginning of the song. Obviously created by Gary Richrath. Even though its Bruce Halls song.
Ah...REO. Probably not many here who have been listening to REO since the early 70s...yes, I'm old! ;) My fav back then, as was with many of us, was Riding the Storm Out. I don't recall ever listening to Back on the Road Again, & didn't even know who it was when I heard it on KSHE-95 the other day. Shameful, I know. But anyway, I know now, & am going to dl it to my music player. Old Rock'n'Roller & proud of it! Kay
My favorite REO song and lo and behold Kevin isn't singing it.

Saw these guys many times. Very professional, great sound. Saw them around "69" or "70" in Marion , Ohio, at a movie theater. The crowd crashed the doors , REO tore the place up. you knew they were going to be around for awhile. Our luck.

You got a good ear for music to mention that.
eewright2001 3 years ago
Intro riff sounds like riff in Beat It , not Dirty Diana!

This song reminds me of Cruising around Marquette Park back in the early '80's long before the neighborhood went to "hell".
If you grew up on the South West side of Chicago you know what I'm talking about.

OMG you lived around Marquette park, I grew up in that area..

Also my favorite REO tune. K Cronin made them famous but never did much for me.
nhammerh 3 years ago
Exactly, like Steve Perry from Journey, Outsider Leads to Fame, Becomes Demise of Band... (even though they both rocked for a second)...

Probably my favorite REO song ever. Thanks for the post.

Yeah. I'm from Cali and I'm 25. When I heard this song when I was little, I didn't know who it was by. Now, REO kicks ass!! Thanks Bruce

after joining YouTube had this tune in my head for ages but couldn't remember who sang it. Good old YouTube came up trumps again. Loved the riff an guitar solo. Great to dance an headbang to lol.

Does anyobody know where this song is from?
The guitar riff in the beginning is exactly the same as in Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana.
Cetramarius 3 years ago

Kay
