Calling it plagiarizing or stealing sounds so legalistic. It's called quoting, sampling, montage, cut-ups, mash-ups, allusion, interpolation, homage. It's done in reggae music (and other styles too) all the time, especially live performances, where improvisational elements are often used, commonly variations on popular melodies.
Frank Zappa did this often in his guitar solos, musicially quoting his own prior work and pop songs of the day...
I can imagine Bob laughing his ass off at that show while high. I've known a few Jamaicans that think cartoons are way funnier than they are :P could be the pot, could be the sense of humor from the culture, could be both idk :)
Who cares Bob made some cool tunes who cares if he did steal it and im not saying he did but so what i mean its not like he got famous for the one song so the banana splits dont have a reason to be anrgy if they are
The Banana Splits were never "underground". If you were a around in 1969/70 you knew the song.
It's called cryptomnesia - you come up with something you think is original but isn't. My Sweet Lord is a great example where someone famous got nailed for it. Bob should have been sued.
Why is it so far-fetched for Bob Marley to adapt part of the tune from the Banana Splits? I'm not accusing him doing it, but why not?
I know that Buffalo Soldiers was written long before its release, but couldn't the "Wajaja" part have been added much later?
If he did decide to use it, I wouldn't classify it as stealing. I would almost give him props for using it in a different way. I think it's kind of cool that they are so similar.
Bob wrote Buffalo soldier very early in his career, it was just never released, during his lifetime. his wife rita put together the whole confrontation album, which buffalo soldier was released on. im pretty sure thats the facts, not positive though. I believe buffalo soldier came first.
Thank you for presenting the evidence. Awesome job with the side by side. Yes, it would appear that Bob Marley was the 5th Banana Split. Maybe he worked at that amusement park one summer?
it was common to incorporate other sounds and medleys in ska & reggae, its not really stealing. in the 60s theres songs that had the same instrumental as louie louie but with completely different lyrics. was common in the garage rock scene. also its a part of American folk tradition as well, pete seeger did it..so has bob dylan. still cant excuse P Diddy...now thats what you call stealing.
Yeah. He might have been watching the splits one morning after the wake and bake, then in the studio later that night forgot where it came from. But the song is original thus I dub Nesta NOT a thief.
I watched Banana splits when I was five or six, ('70, '71) and the first thing that hit me when I heard "Buffalo Soldier" was "That's the banana splits song!" But it would never occur to me to call Bob Marley a rip off artist. Buffalo soldier is an original enough song that there's no justification for that.
bob was sayin yoi yoi yoi yoi way before these banana bitches came out. and if you dont believe look at that get up stand up concert he did at the ending he said woi yoi woi woi yoi
if you are a real man you can say that every new song that is going to be released sounds the same as an older song bob marley isn't the only one and bob marley was the only one who made this song big because the other song you let us here is a dum song who has never been a number one hit.
so then you can't blame him for being a smart man;)

i dont see why it matters, maybe it did inspire Marley's Chorus? but back then there were no laws saying you couldnt use anything that inspired you to make music? just think of how many times artists have used "La La La"? do you think people could really put a claim to such ridiculous things?,& Lordrufus, maybe Marley was a marginal song writer, but how many artists do you know, could put a paragraph into one sentence? come on people, forget the politics & just enjoy theh music! :)
Well, these two songs definitely one thing in common: They both sound like they took about three minutes to write. Come on now. Marley was a passionate, intelligent and charismatic artist...but he was also a marginal songwriting talent at best.
Actually I've heard plenty of Bob's other songs. I don't mean "marginal" in a negative way necessarily. Now if I had said "mediocre" that would be a different matter entirely. But people shower praise on him as he he reinvented the wheel or something. He was a decent enough composer within the aesthetic confines of the reggae genre. He wrote some fine melodies and he was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to be noticed on an international level.
I noticed this too about a year ago when I heard the theme on boomerang TV for the first time in 25 years. No you are not crazy. It is the SAME. Bob Marley had young children when this cartoon aired. There were times I am sure, when he spent time with his kids and I am sure he heard it and it stuck. Bob did have a sense of humor.Ziggy, Cedella and Steven would all fall around the right age to have been watching Banana Splits when it aired. And Bob spent some time in the states too.
I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking "Hey it's the Banana Splits song" In fact I remember reading Bob liked this cartoon and freely admited "lifting" the "Banana Chant" he called it...good stuff
How's this for an eerie coincidence. Jeffrey Winkless, who played Fleegle, died of a cancerous brain tumor, just like Marley. His brothers played two of the other characters, But they were all credited under fake names. They were the sons of the writer of the Banana Splits song, Nelson J. Winkless!
Buffalo soldiers fought in the United States, which is itself a republic (contrary to popular misconception, it's not a democracy; just remember the pledge of allegiance: "..and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands..."). Just as long as you remember that 'under God' is one of them modern _alterations_ to the original intent of the Pledge---whose author, was a committed socialist (an actual socialist, not a slightly left-of-centre corporatist with yahoo enemies).
has ever experienced the munchies will tell you that when you're stoned, it's nearly impossible to turn down a banana split! "Banana republic" is a common term for a small government that rules by military force, or the use of SOLDIERS, usually on tropical islands, not unlike Jamaica!
end there! The word "split" actually rhymes with the word "shit!" (again, please excuse the vulgarity). But there's still more! Bob Marley was born in Jamaica, which is a tropical island, and banana trees grow wildthere! He was also known to smoke marijuana in a large cigarette known in Jamaica as a "spliff," a word bearing a remarkable resemblance to the word "split." Most people experience increased appetite when smoking marijuana, an effect commonly known as the "munchies," and anyone who
The uncannily similar sound of these two songs has plagued mankind for decades... but the connection doesn't end there. Do you realize that the abbreviations for both "Banana Splits" and "Buffalo Soldier" are "B.S."? Now, as we all know, "B.S." is commonly understood to stand for "bull shit," (please excuse the vulgarity) and a bull is a very similar animal to a buffalo -- in fact, the male buffalo IS referred to as a "bull!" But the connection still doesn't
fact...this song bob did not released it... back in 1979'it was cut off from the recording sessions...but later after his death it was released with other bob's unreleased songs by his producer in 1983...
apart from that i would say that such things happens from elvis to michael jackson or tom jones...singers might pick some melodies from other old songs...to bring some thing new or different...
Definite similarities, Hardcore Marley fans need to get their head out of the clouds and look at it from a cool level headed point of view. Bob Marley made great music and there is nothing wrong with sampling!
It was common in jamaican music to incorporate melodies..verses..quotes or even what was on the newspaper that day. you can find this in american music, rock..r&b..etc Example: song louie louie, theres quite a few singles with the same exact instrumental but different title and lyrics. even the other famous and great Bob. Mr Zimmerman borrowed from other songs. its not a rip off its tradition
I don't think Shakespeare had an original plot in all of his plays or poems...these days, he'd have been silenced, or in gaol for copyright violation---I guess we'd be better off that way, at least Sacred Property Rights would still be extended far beyond what the State of Nature, or a truly free civilisation, could ever allow.
wikipedia "Buffalo Soldier (song)"... It has been widely observed that the refrain is ALMOST identical to that used in the Banana Splits theme song ("The Tra La La Song" ). Almost, get it right! That means not exact!
i dont even know y i thought this was interesting i thought u may have something there but i just gotta say who ever did this its aa its aa how can i say this fukin idiot
Hey, Bob was dead for two years before he released Buffalo Soldier? 1983? What year are you talking about? An error as gross as this makes one wonder where YOU are comin' from!
Hey, Bob was dead for two years before he released Buffalo Soldier? 1983? What year are you talking about? An error as gross as this makes one wonder where YOU are comin' from!
this is stupid, the two songs are completley different except for the part that isnt even real words, also im pretty sure that bob didnt listen to this bannana song very much
And only seven which are generally used, arranged in any fashion possible.
Think about this in terms of probability - if every songwriter can only use seven notes for his/her melody, eventually there's going to be ones that are the same.
Seriously people, I'm sure it's no conspiracy, just a stroke of odd luck.
Yeah, and with those small number of notes, think of how many songs that DO NOT sound the same. There's more math than the 12 notes, the arrangement of notes due to rhythm also creates more patterns. I'm not sayin' hang Bob high, but this one was dead one. Hey, even John Lennon said a Corn Flakes commercial inspired him for a song. In real folk music, you could borrow snatches of melody and add different words and meanings.
I think when Bob Marley was touring in the U.S. and probably read and learned more about the Buffalo soldiers in the U.S. he must have caught some saturday morning television and heard the song.
i assume it was an innocent thing...maybe he used to watch that show and the melody stuck inhis head and just came out as a good filler for his song.i dont think of it being a terrible thing....it should betaken as a compliment really...
Bob marley copy banana Splits? jajaj or banana split copy bob marley? im going to buy banana split CD. banana slipt never listened bob marley?? ahh yeah banana split smoke ganja to. YOU suck man.
man i wasted alot of time on this video to not hear shit. even if bob marley did hear that ja la la la la la and wanted to copy it, which i doubt. i mean its not like its the whole song or n e thing. those banana splits are kinda fruity lol
Seawoolf, don't listen to the haters. You're right. I'm a musician, and i totally agree with you. Hey, Marley was brilliant, but not infallible. Why wouldn't he have heard the Banana Splits song? Did he live in a cave?
get a life dumb fuckers. Trying to disrespect the Greatest that ever lived? dumb stupid fuckers. mind what you say about Bob marley- ass holes with a wacked out comparison of a legend & some dumb fuck video. Freaking pricks & cunt faces.
Hahahahahahha "Buffalo Soldier" is an other video and "Banana Song" or something like that is other song. Difference between these two songs is VERY VERY VERY VERY BIG.
i must say that i didn't see very many facts here. hearing isn't enough to judge, but i whole heartedly believe he did not steal anything from that 'banana splits' song.
lol that show looks retarted... i must have missed that show by a few years. the only part that's similar is the la la la part and marley isn't saying la la la
just for the record - bob marley's dad was "white" and bob died of cancer, so...take your anger/hate somewhere else. and take some wailers music with, maybe you'll listen to the lyrics and realize that this kind of thinking is pointless and destructive.
lol that is very funny...watch this video...everything is similar especially a simple melody. who cares...bob marley is awesome [youtube] watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM
First of all if you know about jamican culture you would know that all our music consist of chants are such for example when beenieman man says ''sim simmer'' and local people in jamaica have been using these adlibs so to speak before bob marley knew what a guitar was. second out of all the things said in this song of importants you choose to make a discussion out of this chant
Copyright law requires two criteria to prove infringment. Access and similarity. I think you'd have a hard time proving either of these. But then, why would you bother trying?
just the lalalalal part sonds like it every body uses a little somthing from every body song he took a hot line and made it a hot song lalalala bitches
i think they are similiar but its not like its some masterpiece of a melody that couldnt be reproduced by chance. think about it, you are simply singing la la la over a chord progression. if the chords are extremely similar then the la la las might end up being. i was in a band and we use to write songs and just look at each other and say "what song is that? are we ripping something off" oftentimes a month would pass before it hit us that we had actually ripped some song off accidently.
NOT exactly the same melody. In music theory terms, The Banana Split theme does not include the IV note employed by Marley in the last phrase. Yes, it IS similar - and not identical. Any claims of melodic plagarism must involve exact matches for a minimum of 2 consecutive measures of music. Case closed...and this was horsecrap.
lol...fools....MUSIC IS A GLOBAL phenomena!!!. tiz bout SHARING DA INSPIRATION INTERMINGLING ACROSS DA GLOBE.One lil boy invents a rhythm for da first time on a rock in Iceland while another invents da same in Hungary singin in da shower.People gotta feel it all da same rhythm.Humanity crax me UP!RELAAAAAAAAAAX! Marley owns and so does banana splitz lol
A few corrrections. One, Marley actually died in 1981, not 1983. Two, by the 1970s he wasn't spending all his time in the slums of Kingston but was doing a lot of touring.
As for whether its ripped off from the Banana Splits theme - it's possible he got the melody line subconsciously (it bores into your head like an earworm). He might not have meant to take it, but it's awfuly similar. It could be likely that his kids were watching an episode somewhere and it seeped in.
i dont think that marely stole this melody at all. you can't compare the two one is a trivial childrens song melody and one is a serious soul cry from a man who studied pasionately about african culture and about his rots. however i do see where you could be comming from but the man had originality in everysong he wrote so thats my two cents
It's an awesome tune, I bet Bob heard it in the background in some hotel or something and it seeped in subconciously. Marley died in May, 1981. The Splits started in September 1968, so less than 13 years.
I've always argued that he did his own "version" of that Banana Splits number. He could've seen the show in 1973 when touring the U.S. with Sly and the Family Stone or Bruce Springsteen. That show was syndicated for decades - I saw it as late as 1993 still on rotation on TBS. And it was on in the UK too well into the '80s. As far as the melody goes, it is the same, note for note. Bob was getting high in a motel room and watching the Banana Splits - no question!
Yow, first Bob wah dead 1983. Second, the beat's not the same. Third, the la la la is the same. Fourth, this Marley chune's still good, I jus need to get dem fluffy animals out ah mi head. Fifth, thanks for the interesting clip, but I wonder if the chune come from someting even earlier?
First of all, buffalo soldier is by no means "one of his greatest tunes" as you put it. secondly, I seriously doubt Marley ever heard a song for an amusement park living in the slums of Kingston, Jamaica.
Yep, I used to watch the Banana Splits when i was a kid. When i heard the Marley song, that's what immediately came to mind

Just a note that the song was co-written by Noel G Williams, perhaps he wrote the "Split" bit!?
irishmusicdotcodotuk 4 years ago

There are 12 possible notes:
C, C#, D, D#, E, F, G, G#, A, A#, B, B#.
And only seven which are generally used, arranged in any fashion possible.
Think about this in terms of probability - if every songwriter can only use seven notes for his/her melody, eventually there's going to be ones that are the same.
Seriously people, I'm sure it's no conspiracy, just a stroke of odd luck.
xxBOESExx 4 years ago
Yeah, and with those small number of notes, think of how many songs that DO NOT sound the same. There's more math than the 12 notes, the arrangement of notes due to rhythm also creates more patterns. I'm not sayin' hang Bob high, but this one was dead one. Hey, even John Lennon said a Corn Flakes commercial inspired him for a song. In real folk music, you could borrow snatches of melody and add different words and meanings.
maddymud 4 years ago
no such thing as b#. you left out F#. he ripped it. no biggie

Marley was herbalist and he was probably high wathcing the splits on tv, and probably got some inspiration.

Short'nin Bread, short'nin' bread, feed my chillun' on short'nin' bread . . .
It's public domain and not protectible. Talk about horsecrap!!
bobdevo 4 years ago
no.
cwallen19803 4 years ago
i think they are similiar but its not like its some masterpiece of a melody that couldnt be reproduced by chance. think about it, you are simply singing la la la over a chord progression. if the chords are extremely similar then the la la las might end up being. i was in a band and we use to write songs and just look at each other and say "what song is that? are we ripping something off" oftentimes a month would pass before it hit us that we had actually ripped some song off accidently.
PhilCommander2 4 years ago
NOT exactly the same melody. In music theory terms, The Banana Split theme does not include the IV note employed by Marley in the last phrase. Yes, it IS similar - and not identical. Any claims of melodic plagarism must involve exact matches for a minimum of 2 consecutive measures of music. Case closed...and this was horsecrap.
hapbarb 4 years ago
Funny how preconceived biases can influence something so mundane as recognizing whether 2 things sound the same.
if it wasn't bob marley it would be obvious to more people that the tra la la part is exactly the same.
BTW, I really like marley and I don't really care but a fact's a fact.

broxy18 4 years ago
The two songs have absolutely nothing in common... except for that tra-la-la/hyoi-yoi-yoi part, which is damn near identical.
SailorBarsoom 4 years ago
A few corrrections. One, Marley actually died in 1981, not 1983. Two, by the 1970s he wasn't spending all his time in the slums of Kingston but was doing a lot of touring.
As for whether its ripped off from the Banana Splits theme - it's possible he got the melody line subconsciously (it bores into your head like an earworm). He might not have meant to take it, but it's awfuly similar. It could be likely that his kids were watching an episode somewhere and it seeped in.
ttwnrancon 5 years ago
Are you kidding me? You made it seem like the whole song was copied. That's only one part of the song, and I highly doubt it.
ReadyReady 5 years ago

GodsDaughter19 5 years ago
i dont think that marely stole this melody at all. you can't compare the two one is a trivial childrens song melody and one is a serious soul cry from a man who studied pasionately about african culture and about his rots. however i do see where you could be comming from but the man had originality in everysong he wrote so thats my two cents
GodsDaughter19 5 years ago
George Harrison got busted for "My Sweet Lord" on less similarity than this.

magicisland 5 years ago

Bob was getting high in a motel room and watching the Banana Splits - no question!
buzzchimney 5 years ago
he totally did, stop denying it

Yow, first Bob wah dead 1983. Second, the beat's not the same. Third, the la la la is the same. Fourth, this Marley chune's still good, I jus need to get dem fluffy animals out ah mi head. Fifth, thanks for the interesting clip, but I wonder if the chune come from someting even earlier?
