@planetmormon Shows like this (and "Solid Gold" in the U.S.) were there to showcase a new album or song in a seemingly live atmosphere (audience & performance). Because it was new and being introduced, they WANTED people to hear the recording and get to know and love and buy it. Once a song is well-known then performing it live (w/o lip syncing) is more appropriate.
@Blink182isthesex I have a solution for you when watching this video or any of your other favorite vids: go to your favorite video, then click on the web browser address bar but highlight only the word "tube", then erase it. After that, type in "repeat", then hit "ENTER", and the video automatically repeats itself. It works! Trust me.
The Beatles are the greatest pop band Britain ever produced. The Smiths are the second greatest pop band that Britain ever produced. The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band Britain produced.
It's a close one between The Smiths and The Beatles. Different era and different time, so it's difficult to judge. The Beatles have a greater quantity of songs because they were around for longer, but The Smiths have a higher level of output for the short time they were together. Controversial as well, but I believe the Morrissey/Marr writing partnership to be superior to the Lennon/McCartney. The contrast is greater.
It's all personal preference, I prefer The Who to the Stones and never really got the whole Beatles thing. People's tastes vary, I mean, listen to the 'gopher' music as I call it teens eat up now
Aren't opinions great? Personal preference. I would just prefer to think about a private performance with T.a.T.u. rather than someone doing the reacharound with Morissey. Better enjoy your opinions whilst you can. As soon as the communist Obama is elected by the illiterate, you will not be allowed to have an opinion when he "fundamentally changes" America.
I'm just not convinced. Similarly with the Beatles, they're okay, I just can't see why they got so huge. With The Smiths though I quite like the writing but not the performance.
oh i totally agree, the Beatles were spectacularly over rated and still are, they're not even close to The Smiths, have you listened to all their greatest songs like william it was really nothing, what difference does it make, girl afraid, hand in glove, sheila take a bow, some girls are bigger that others, bigmouth strikes again? etc
Well, I had a 'best of' (yeah, not always a good idea) a while ago and the only thing on there I could enjoy was This Charming Man. I gave it a few listens and just gave up on them. So they're in the 'not interested' section now along with Radiohead.
i think that you dont find The Smiths, they find you. i was reccomended the band about 4 years ago and looked them up but didnt see anything i was ready to appreciate. but then 3 years ago, after a 2 year bout of hiphop (dreadful, i know that now!) and fell head over heels for The Smiths, but of course we are all different and thats why we like different things. oh and did 'karma police' really not entice you to like Radiohead, or 'creep' or 'no surprices?' - not even a bit? lol
Actually, I do really like the song 'Creep', but after Thom Yorke's insane arrogance when he complained about 'Creep' being popular and that he never wanted it to be a hit song (idiot) I've not particularly looked into anything else. I know No Surprises and Fake Plastic Trees, but I just find them dull (depressing) without the reasons that make Creep interesting to me.
when The Smiths first came on the scene 80s Media just did not get them. Morrisey amd Marr music was so unique. The camp act the tounge in cheek attitude. Such a two fingers on the electronic crap of the period and Thatcher's Britain

Not really my cup of tea. I prefer music...with singing...and I'm pretty sure that God would play music better than that, guys, come on.
God would dance better too...and play guitar better. I don't really like the playback either, I'd prefer it even if he had a mic and was faking. Of course, he's faking here, too.
First off, they aren't playing "live" in this video. Totally lipsynched. As for how you would get close to this on a guitar - you will need two trem units ... among other things.
if theres one thing i dont get about Morrisey is his horrible dancing or whatever he is doing, whatever happened to just singing into a microphone and getting just enough into it to make it look good, none of this arms flailing out business
That is one of the major problems with the music industry, music has become secondary to the money and marketing strategies...these days it seems as if actual talent is on the bottom of the list after all the other crap that they care so much more about! The music industry is killing music! Has any one seen the mtv awards lately? It's pathetic! I saw the first one ever, Madonna doing like a virgin! MTV is a joke now, it has turned into something that they hated back when they first started!
As much as I adore The Smiths, they made some horrific commercial decisions. Releasing 'How Soon Is Now' as a B-side and then releasing it a few months later as an A-side?Releasing 'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore' as the lead Meat Is Murder single over the sure-fire number one hit 'I Want The One I Can't Have'? Madness. I have to say that this video is when the lads looked their coolest though.

Don't think when you hear the superficial, commercial music of today on the radio that thats the music of our generation. Wise words Ray. I'm 49 this year and I've loved music from all the decades I've passed through. Zep,The Specials,Joy Divison,Bauhaus, The Smiths, Primal Scream...The Libertines...The trouble is the industry is controlled by too few people and that stops invention and creativity rising to the surface. It's still there though and you are more likely to find it on the net or the small gig scene than on any of the larger commercial organs.Try Milburn & The Cribs. Keep enjoyin your music Ray
I'm 17, and i think people should stop bitching about the quality of music today. I love The Beatles, The Clash, The Smiths, The Velvet Underground, and more musical artists than I can name. But I'm sick of people who neglect today's music as plagiarized, semi-decent crap. Our musical revolution has come over the past 20 years in the form of nirvana, blur, the white stripes, radiohead, the libertines and other bands that make great artistically relevant music for our generation.
im 15 and I think that the only decent bands (not solo artists, morrissey ftw)split up (or had their golden years) sum 20 years ago i say, Britpop to the people!
fucking sweet hair. the 80s > 00s. who is pregnant. that is all anyone cares about now.. back then people had coke problems but still made good music. fuck e-merican shit-popand shit-hop
It's not just those of us over 40 who think today's music is very ordinary or sucks...it blows me away to see so many comments from 13, 14, 15 year olds who get nothing out of 21st century popular music and find solace and inspiration in artists like the BEATLES, LED ZEP, STRANGLERS, the CLASH and the mighty SMITHS.....I love music too much to want to see it die, so I hope there's a musical revolution in the next year or two, but right now it's not in sight!
The Strokes first album was great, I'm really not into Nirvana, and I haven't listened to enough Bjork for me to comment. Anyway, I didn't say I don't like any modern bands/music, all I meant was that I prefer listening to older music, mostly 60's stuff - and the Smiths of course!
I will give anything to be reborn and be old enough when the Smiths were still together--is not that I dont like Moz I love him but this era was so special! I wish I was born so I could have been there.
I was 15 in 1983 and it was a magic time : every EP of the SMITHS was an event , the cover was usually a fine artwork and the music was always magic !! good old times !
this song IS 80's at its best. a lot of the smiths other songs are way ahead of their time though and do sound like they were made in the early 90's. its just brilliant music.
I just finished reading the book "Songs That Saved Your Life," about every Smiths songs ever recorded. In it Marr says that they could never play this live very well because the bulk of it (the grinding sound) was a studio trick. He also said that this Top of the Pops version was them miming to the recorded version. Morrissey refused to use a mic so that it was obvious that it was just a lip-job
That performance was hilarious! I love how fucking retarded Grohl's drumming looks and how he puts his arms in the air when the guitar for the first verse starts! TV gem.
Did they edit out the part where he machine guns the audience? (0:40) Could have sworn I saw a version where it was much more obvious.
discountlionsafarii 1 week ago
I love Morrisey's microphone and Marr's backing guitar parts at 0:35. I think that audio doesnt come from the live version.

Agreed! I think music was half decent in the 1990's, but has sucked arse for the most part of the past 10 years.

I'm only 19, and i think everything sucks. There are only a handful of decent bands at the minute, none of which come close to the Smiths.

what about the strokes? nirvana? bjork?
al3jandro 4 years ago
The Strokes first album was great, I'm really not into Nirvana, and I haven't listened to enough Bjork for me to comment. Anyway, I didn't say I don't like any modern bands/music, all I meant was that I prefer listening to older music, mostly 60's stuff - and the Smiths of course!

I will give anything to be reborn and be old enough when the Smiths were still together--is not that I dont like Moz I love him but this era was so special! I wish I was born so I could have been there.

I was 15 in 1983 and it was a magic time : every EP of the SMITHS was an event , the cover was usually a fine artwork and the music was always magic !! good old times !

the smiths una banda lejendaria de los 80´s son buenos pero t.A.T.u. multiplico por 100000 el valor de esa cancion

no puedes comparar para nada la version original con la de TATU la de TATU es patetica comparada con esta obra maestra.

i agree. but doesn't that have a lot to do with the new wave of music that's surging through at the moment?
great song anyway.

mmm the 80's. this song sounds more like a 90's song then an 80's, oh well. its amazing nonetheless
Cocaineandoreos 4 years ago
you are so wrong this is the 80`s at its best....you shut your mouth how can you say.....it`s 90`s music
Yorkshiregirl1967 4 years ago 3
this song IS 80's at its best. a lot of the smiths other songs are way ahead of their time though and do sound like they were made in the early 90's. its just brilliant music.

Morrissey is a god, but his dancing is well shameful
kamelion7 4 years ago 5
that's the appeal of moz though.
he can dance like that & easily get away with it because lyrically, he's god-like.

ive read that book aswell its good, he started trying to use a pedel with prerecorded functions but the timing was alway difficult!

Go to "The Smiths-How soon is now" by "danielearwicker" and this all becomes clear!

I just finished reading the book "Songs That Saved Your Life," about every Smiths songs ever recorded. In it Marr says that they could never play this live very well because the bulk of it (the grinding sound) was a studio trick. He also said that this Top of the Pops version was them miming to the recorded version. Morrissey refused to use a mic so that it was obvious that it was just a lip-job
cdayton11 4 years ago 5
wow, thats really interesting. First artist I've seen lip-sync and blatently not hide it.
repsect +1

WHO CARES about Nirvana !

Regardless of how you may feel about their music, to doubt their influence on the genre of rock is a very ignorant thing to do indeed.

That performance was hilarious! I love how fucking retarded Grohl's drumming looks and how he puts his arms in the air when the guitar for the first verse starts! TV gem.
