I found the answer:

Leave the Gradiant Map @ 100...

On my screen Value is best set to 70.

Now I just need to find out how to get the old icons back :P

In MAX 2011 the "Bind to Space Warp" and most of the select icons

and are almost impossible to see after doing this, any clue on how
