Duran Duran just played a lot of funk after the first album while Japan though more interesting split after making their most arcane album. Duran at it's most artistic had Arcadia and that was simply baroque yet still big beat new romantic club pop
Depeche Mode being signed to Mute, a smaller label, allowed them to go under the radar of Warner Brothers Records, and with 50% control of their records, and a higher profit percentage, after expenses, they could afford to be the band that they wanted to be, while Duran Duran morphed into something more and more fragmented, and less focused, ultimately becoming a parody of themselves in many ways. Hopefully we will never see Justin Timberlake & Timberland writing horrible songs for DM.
All their peers went either, full on commercial pop, or pop-rock, as a response to the "Abrams Report" that suggested that every song should have a certain sound to sell TVs, or refrigerators, and or cars, in terms of advertisers on Radio. If you didn't have the sound of Eddie Van Halen's guitar, or the sound of Led Zeppelin's drums, they refused to play your music on the air. I know this sounds crazy, but John Taylor talked about it in for the DVD "Album Classics: Rio: Duran Duran"
...that Japan was out glamored, and out imaged, musically by Duran Duran--a band that they had directly influenced, however, DD consistantly wrote bigger, more danceable songs, with bigger and better hooks than Japan, which was more jazz fusion/funk influenced.
Regardless, Depeche Mode bested the rest of these bands by being consistent in their music, and never counting themselves as being a part of a scene-- rather, they simply focused on their expression of music as they saw it.
...tell record execs who would dare tell them to change their sound, or image, no! Duran Duran went pop, Spandau Ballet, the Culture Club, Flock Of Seagulls, Tear For Fears, Billy Idol, Talk Talk, etc., and the only 3 New Wave bands that survived the American record company push to force New Wave band to go pop, are DM, The Cure, and U2, but even U2 went pop--so to be exact, only two bands, DM and The Cure.
To the other extreme, Japan stayed so committed to not being commercial...
If you notice, they were under attack in this interview? Goodman was very hostile here, in tone. I am from America, and many Americans, at the time, those especially with a mid-western attitude, were threatened by New Wave bands, and would not play the music on the main radio stations, save for selected hits. Depeche Mode is the only New Wave band to survive, as a result of not sell-out their sound to pop. DM owned 50% of the take from its records, thus, they were in the position to...

Haha, Martin at 2:36! He's just too intelligent for all these interviewers. Probably writing a song in his head during the interview.
