@countryboy77351 the 7.3 idi ran from 88 to 94. its the same as a 6.9, only with an over-bore. in 95 they came up with the powerstroke 7.3, which, while very similar in many ways, was a different motor.
@countryboy77351 are you high? ford and international put over 2 million 7.3 powerstrokes in ford trucks and vans . if they werent good they never would have sold 2 million of them
@MrBrockberg the early 90s was the start of the "diesel revolution." more and more people looked to diesels for their towin power. the old cummins 12 valves, and powerstrokes were what got people in gear. the early idis, really werent that popular, thanks to black smoke and big-inch gassers that made similar power.
@MrBrockberg yea i am high i know ford put over 2 million 7.3 POWERSTROKES in trucks and vans and broncos. They never put that many 6.9 and 7.3 IDI's in trucks ,vans, broncos ever
@MrBrockberg how is it by the far the best?? before i get started i love fords and i love cummins but fords more . but 6.9s are a nightmare to make or get more power out of . they good low speed haulers at best. and they blow headgaskets eaily stock even more so when turbocharged and you gotta plug them in a good bit. thats why ford sold 2 million 7.3 Powerstrokes and not 2 million 6.9/7.3 IDIs
@fishnfreak18 an 86 is the best version of the 6.9 block so ur good there. They are good motors so long as you DONT turbo them. if u turbo em you NEED head studs... they can take a beating but they arent as durable as the 7.3 powerstroke. Make sure you check the oil and coolant!!! 6.9s arent as prone to cavitation as the 7.3s are, but its a good idea to check anyway. ask if they've used SCTs in the radiator for cavitation... You either love em or you hate em :) haha
@blackhawk8427 they are better motors if you DO turbo them. its often misconceived that you cant turbo an idi. the difference is, they cant handle the high boost pressures. a 6.9 or 7.3 at 10 psi of boost has the same compression as a 7.3 powerstroke at 30 psi. this is because the idis were designed as naturally aspirated motors, and have a 21:1 compression ratio, whereas a 7.3 stroke has only bout 18:1. you only need head studs if you plan on boostin over 10-12 psi.
@blackhawk8427 Dont turbo them? I have a 6.9 in an 85 that I've put over 500,000 miles on. Still runs strong. They had breathing problems in the exhaust. I installed the turbo in 91 when it had 40k miles on it. At the same time I put a 4" exhaust on it. I never run the turbo with more than 10 psi. I've never had to put head gaskets in it. It gets 28 MPG due to the 4 speed brownie box asside the stock 4 speed. Great engine! Not as good as a powerstroke but better than a chevy any day!
@fishnfreak18 the 6.9 is a great motor. if you tune your IP right, and dont get crazy, crankin the shit out of it, youll get years of great service out of it, and see 16-18 mpg. youll never make as much power as a powerstoke or cummins, but itll be reliable.
@wickedblackcamaro With a little modding those turbos are fine, but I still don't think they're worth the money. Buy an old beater 6.9L with a turbo, rebuild the turbo, do a little work to the truck, and sell the rest of the truck. Free turbo haha. You just have to have the money for the truck in the first place.
@86F250 haha well she did better later on.. and of course a z71 would beat the worlds 2nd slowest diesel (behind the chevy 6.2 of course) lol Put it up against a powerstroke, and well, THATS a different story! :)
Mine came from CA and I had to monkey with it to get it to move decent. The guy I bought it from said when he moved to Cali from Colorado, a shop had to mess with it to make it meet emissions for CA. I wouldnt be at all surprised if it was over 20 seconds before and now it does alot better.
He said when he moved there a shop did a bunch of work to it that was maintenance stuff and it never ran the same after that. I had to advance the pump timing a bit along with a few other small things. all I know is, it reached peak acceleration/power at 1/4 throttle and didnt smoke even a puff going through the rocky mountains. The thing wasn't getting anywhere near the proper amount of fuel.
I later cut it down to 16 (after some engine work), but I don't have the truck now cause I couldn't get a title, over $1,500 in fees owed to CA dmv that they wanted me to pay! haha yea right!
actually, just cleaned the air filter, new fuel filter, ran injector cleaner through it, and fixed the air leak on the fuel return lines. gained 15mph up the big hill too, before it did 55-60, after 70-75.
One thing that hurts your acceleration is that C6, they take quite a few horses to run. Not that an IDI 6.9 is fast, even with 4.11s and ZF 5 speed, but hey.
However, they're cheap, reliable/tough, simplistic, will run on almost any fuel oil, sound great and are armageddon proof. (All mechanical!)
My 6.9s odometer has flipped over still starts right up awesome motor it used to haul 4000 pounds of water in the bed every night
