Best recording of this piece. The way Sofronitsky keeps the tension from begin to end is unique. He does wonderful things with pedal, note the use of middle pedal in measure 111. But he also respects the rests. Beautiful voicing and pp accompaniments against the main voice. Andante in beginning rather slow but he accomplishes it to be convincing. Great example of creative tone palet together with respecting the notes and meaning with no rhytmical disturbances.
ethereally beautiful! for some reason, sofronitsky made my eyes wet again, after the rachmaninoff prelude in d. what with his carefree and simple grandeur.

In characteristic style he starts out sober and gradually inebriates.I like the luxuriant torpor here.
But this is way too chaste for me.Liszt and Chastity go like pickles and marshmallows together.Great earth moving tone.

Are there any footages of Sofronitsky playing the piano?

I've never seen any...

So pictures are all we have? Is there not even a short film or a family tape or anything of Sofronitsky?
caijpp 3 years ago
I wish such film would existed...
I just don't know! ;(

I'm sure it does. Except that its not sold or something. Probably just one in the world, possibly destroyed. :(

@Sinfoniette Probably somewhere stashed in the kremlin archives collecting dust.

@caijpp Don't worry, because we all know the man like family through his music....

@caijpp why then you don't ask whether there is a short film of Liszt himself playing his piece? Music first, man!

Marvelous - another hidden treasure. Viewers might be interested to compare this to Claudio Arrau's rendition.
