Just plain sick! This was the song was the 2nd reason I bought this CD when it came out, Kashmire and Gallows Pole are 1st and 3rd respectively the other reasons.
This is a traditional gospel song. As far as I know the first recording is the Blind Willie Johnson version from about 1929. While the version on Presence was more like an original rock tune that ripped off the lyrics from Blind Willie Johnson, this version is much closer to being a straight cover of the original Blind Willie Johnson version.
Starting from audience right, mandolin(though from the size, it could be a mandola), banjo, 6 & 12 string guitar, drum set (bass, snare, tom-tom, cymbals, etc.),human voice (the greatest instrument of all), hurdy gurdy sans capuchin (Leopold Mozart -Wolfgang's daddy- wrote a concerto for this thing, but didn't include a monkey), and upright bass.
This is definitely one of the best postings I currently have. This video comes directly from the No Quarter Video which I maintained over the years until recently when my VHS ate it. Thank you for preserving it digitally. There is another out there with primarily percussion that I have heard recently on the GLOBE 94.7 and it is also an absolute must. When I find it I will be posting it for all to enjoy.
This track, called "Nobody's fault but mine" features the lyrics "nobody's fault but mine". The song called Gallows Pole features the words "gallows pole". That's how you can tell these two songs apart.

how they managed to turn an awesome hard rock song into an awesome acoustic song is beyond me

Nobody's Fault but Mine started out as a traditional blues song. Led Zeppelin turned it into a hard rock song for Presence.

Just to clear something non-music-related up...
... The location used in the video is the Aberllefenni Slate Quarry, which is near Corris in Mid Wales. A bit of local pride never goes amiss!
Still, a fantastic tune. I love that bluesy sound...

does anyone know what name did they play under on this video? was it page/plant or? and did they have any albums made in the same mood?
arrcanamundi 3 years ago
It was called No Quarter, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, and was a special on VHI/MTV. You can get the video and cd online.

this version shows their blues roots. that is why they chose atlantic records in alabama.

the original song off of Presence was bluesly ut this dives more into their middle eastern tastes similar to the crunge

I prefer the acoustic version by Blind Willie Johnson of "It's Nobody's Fault But Mine" -- recorded on Dec 3, 1927 in Dallas, Tx.

I love this version. It was shown on the Page-Plant MTV Unplugged from around 1992 or 1993. I still have the VHS copy I taped off the tele.

Saw Page and Plant perform this version when they were on tour in '95 in Orlando. One of the best concerts ever.

What instrument is it that the guy is cranking on ?
rfhat 4 years ago
I believe it is a hurdy-gurdy, which you can also hear in the old song by Donovan, The Hurdy Gurdy Man.
jkdoll 4 years ago
Ah yes, it's dark and dusty in that part of my memory, thank you
rfhat 4 years ago
It is indeed a hurdy gurdy, but you'd struggle to hear one on the Donovan track.
