The GN/and the more powerfull GNX were 2 different birds. Both quite potent-but the more pleasing sound is from the 5.0.Sounds like a V8/not a vacuum cleaner on 220 volt.Sorry,V6'S are for honda's w/fart cans.
The Grand National is a beautiful car. If you raced a stock Grand National vs. any stock Fox body Mustang from the 80's, the Grand National will kick it's ass as it would any 80's car in the US. Please stop with the "Mustang's are better" and "Grand National's are better" crap. I personally like both but I purchased an '87 Grand National because if I ever had to sell it (I hope I won't). But if I do I'll be able to get a lot more money than the $50 I would get for any Fox Body Mustang.
GN WERE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE THAT FAST. THE CORVETTE DEPT WERE THE BIG MONEY MAKER. GM THOUGH THE GN WERE HURT CORVETTE SALES BECAUSE IT WAS FASTER. 20 PLUS YEARS THERE IS STILL NOTHING CAN TOUCH IT !!!!

Im a hardcore Pontiac enthusiast, the old Buicks like the GN, Riviera, and Skylark are beutifull and powerfull cars that i really like. They have my respect, unlike the modern Buicks. I dont like em.
I owned a 86 grandnational in the early 90's at that time nothing could touch it. It had a pitbull chip open exaust ramair and sticky tires. The only thing that beat it was a 427 Nova seriously modified, and he only pulled me a couple car lengths. 5.0 stangs were a joke and so were the Corvettes at that time. I miss it alot nothing like a huge turbo just cranking out the straight pipe.
@TheHorefrost I owned a 1986 5.0 and dusted F-bodies, and hung with and even beat a couple of GN's, so nice try!!! Maybe with a chip that GN made a stock 5.0 look like a 'joke', but with a good driver and 5-speed stick, a 5.0 was quick, regardless of your claims, bub...
@moejr1974 Never said the 86 5.0 I had was stock. had cam, better exhaust, intake and t.body. And yes, I did beat Grand Nationals, with the intercooled engine...
@moejr1974 Never took it to a track. Only street races in the Chicago area. Best guess would be probably mid to high 13's, as I know stock GN's ran high 13's to low 14's. I didn't dust the GN's, mind you, but I did beat 4 out of 6 on the street 0-80 or so. Not to mention the crymaros and t/a's of the genre were pretty much toast and I hung with the turbo t/a on a couple of occasions as well as regularly beating 350's in all sorts of GM's. But that Fox is long gone now...
Yes that was one reason that GM axed The GN. The Other was they wanted a safer front wheel drive platform and none would hold up to the power the turbo v6 or we would have had front drive GN's. That is a scary thought.
hell ya onesick77 my dad had a 1989 turbo trans am 2 years ago and sold it last year and man it was a bad mother it beet my dads 05 gto by a couple of thousands of seconds thats pretty damn good for an old car.
these cars did but not everyone liked em, first of all they had a v-6 and they didn't keep the same size motor in em the whole time they where made. on other reasons these cars where a v-8 killer. beating on the small blocks and big blocks of all makes. a v-6 with a turbo and exhaust that made these cars one of a kind. hell of the dealship they ran in the 13 seconds hell it's kinda funny cause they weren't a v-8 running a 14s in the 1980s.
well we all know where that went too the vette is the thrid fastest car in 2009 cars out of the porsche, the new skyline gtr from nissan, viper and the ford gt. which is funny cause the vette is .1 sec slower than the porsche in the quater mile and those two have been running around each other for years
@Muzicsallitsworth I agree with you everything you said, and that's just what I've heard. It would be like if Dodge made an SRT version of the Avenger that outperformed an SRT Challenger (since the Viper is gone) or if Mitsubishi released something to outperform the EVO (which is probably why the Eclipse is no longer available AWD w/ turbo...)

@marcomariaz26 The only way a stock 86 5.0 beat a GN was if the GN was an 84 or 85 non intercooled one.

I was a little kid in the 80's but what I've heard is that the reason why GM decided to kill the GN was because it was faster than the Corvette.

lol I dont doubt it. Grand Nationals are SICK!

@Kevinesque I've heard the same thing. Not good for your image when you've got a car in another division that will outperform your flagship.
