Well if you expand Medicare to everyone and create a mandate, the system is likely to cover its costs because 65 year olds use health care a lot more often then 25 year olds. By bringing everyone under this plan Medicare will be sustainable.
Also, this will only reform the financial aspect of health care, and not the supply side. Health care is not a commodity it is a human right. As a foreigner in this country I must say that now I am convinced that single payer is the way to go.
@phey120 the idea sounds great conceptually but the nath just doesnt work..contributors on a whole put in pennies on the dollar of what they actually end up pulling out in benefits towards the end..sounds great politically to say you can get thousands of dollars worth of coverage for a few hundred but in the end the tax payer gets stiffed with the remainder which makes it a perpetual sinking ship of a plan.
so why can't young people pay a premium to buy into medicare? It will still be much, much cheaper than the american health insurance plans. I know conservatives* conservatives* not rinos in washington state who want single payer. they just can't afford the premiums or copays anymore. they're not blind.

15% of Americans us medicare, yet 100 percent of us pay for it, and yet every year the government is forced to print more money to subsidize the cost. This ponzi scheme cannot continue forever, and the idea of expanding it to everybody is absurd.

stumbo - yes, you are most definitely confused. A) every other OECD government makes this work better for less money because B) The govt. doesn't have to pay William McGuire of UnitedHealth $120 million salary and $1.1 billion golden parachute. The govt. doesn't have to pay cubicle farms of employees to come up with reasons to deny/exclude. The govt. doesn't have to pay dividends to stock-holders. The govt. doesn't have to advertise.
Real confusing stuff, all right. If you're easily confused.
You honestly believe that a government agency would have less admin that a corporation? 120 million salary and 1.1 billion is 0.26 percent of the projected cost of the proposed bill (500 billion). big savings.
Ive read the bill from cover to cover, this bill is not about healthcare, its about government takeover.
I will be quite if you can name one government agency in America that out performs a corporation. Fascism just doesn't work, never has, never will. BTW I enjoy the talk!
Please understand that "performance" in a corporation means only one thing. Profit. The purpose of a health insurance company is not to provide health care - it is to provide profit. This means jacking up premiums, co-pays, and deductibles, while denying, or reducing care.
Medicare already vastly outperforms private health insurance, delivering 93% of every dollar to providers - the private health insurance companies deliver only 73 cents on the dollar. That's performance where it counts.
BTW, a lot of people, like you, throw around the labels Fascist, Socialist, and Communist like fifth-graders who just learned some new naughty words, but have no idea what they mean.
You can make a case for calling this health care plan socialist - but there's never, ever been a civilized country that had zero socialism. Fascism, on the other hand, is corporatism, backed up by an authoritarian state - two very, very different things.
"Fascism is the merger of state and corporate power." Mussolini
I'm not sure how you can say the bailouts, and take over of domestic car companies, and the attempted take over of the health industry does not qualify as fascism.
And im not sure what you mean by "people like you" is suppose to me.
Wow, stumbo. Just wow. Government takeover is the exact opposite of fascism - as you and Mussolini pointed out. Do you even read your own posts? I'm so boggled by the cognitive dissonance in that post that I'm almost speechless. Maybe if I type slower you'll be able to read. Government takeover is socialism. And what does "socialism" look like? We've nationalized $82.3 billion in corporate and business assets - out of $39.2 trillion. That's it? Socialism is 0.21%? Really? Wow - time to panic.
DMV is socialized, post office is socialized, Amtrak, the list keeps going.... These were all once private companies long since taken over by government.
40 percent of my paycheck goes to the government, yet you claim that only .21 percent of our country is nationalized? Must be pretty inefficient.
if you want socialism, go to another country. america should stay capitalist. most poeple who support socialism ahvent even lived in a real socialist country. if you ever want to experience that, let me take you back in time to Soviet Russia.
It's not capitalist when larger companies are able to run amok unchecked therefore crushing competition. Real capitalism comes when there are some governmental supports in place to bust up monopolies and keep people honest. It's our responsibility as thinking individuals not to make things like socialism be the boogieman while we turn a blind eye to corporate tyranny and greed which greatly diminish the quality of life of the poor and working class.
"One of the worst fallacies in the field of economics—propagated by Karl Marx and accepted by almost everyone today, including many businessmen—is that the development of monopolies is an inescapable and intrinsic result of the operation of a free, unregulated economy. In fact, the exact opposite is true. It is a free market that makes monopolies impossible."
Government regulations and lobbyist create monopolies, not free markets. Ask PG&E or AmTrack.
You know what? You're right. The best my students behave is when I give them a "free market classroom" and let them do whatever they want unchecked, telling them that I in no way intend to impede their desire for social "wealth". It's like I don't even need to be there to govern my class. They just do what they are supposed to because I say it nicely. .... ..... and then I woke up.
My point was that if you do not have a governing body to regulate things, children/profit seeking entities will do whatever they want to get more fun/monetary reward. You can't ask people to curtail their wants out of the kindness of their heart and just make that your policy. Capitalism that is not tempered with some level of responsibility (and ethics) is what led to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and is what is keeping Americans from quality low cost health care.
I feel its when people defer from our constitution that problems arise. In the case of slavery, this defied the clause that "all men are created equal" should have protected them, but government intervened and said slaves were not people. And I feel that the health care issue came from regulation in the insurance industry during the 60s.
Everything government touches it destroys and infects. I'm not sure why people think health care is the exception.
Enslavement fueled capitalism was in effect far longer than the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. You can't at once extol the virtues of the government (all men are created equal in the Constitution) and then indict it by saying that it was then decided that Blacks were not people because those were the same folks and that was the same entity. The slave holding proto-lobbyists along with America's slave holding "founding fathers" compartmentalized their ideals in favor of greed.
My point exactly, all government regulation comes as the result of lobbyist who use it to their advantage.
There is a little saying "Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
I don't understand how people think that more government regulation will magically be in the name of American citizens rather than the lobbyist who fund them.
This is the definition of insanity: Repeating the same action expecting a different result.
... Then the answer is not to let everyone do what they want but to reform the system of lobbying so that it's not as easily corruptible. The answer to making sure food and drug manufacturers aren't killing us is not to do away with the rules but to actually follow them and force profiteers out of the business of setting the standards to begin with.
sharingan - you're kidding? Maybe not. Please name me one country, at any point in history that has had zero socialism. Just one. Waiting...
In the meantime, instead of flinging labels around like fifth-graders who just learned a new naughty word, perhaps you'd like to debate countries like Norway, or Sweden as your "evil socialist" examples. You see, socialism under a bad government like the U.S.S.R. can fail - just as capitalism under a bad government can fail.
we are all mixed, some socialism and capitalism. but i was referring to the idiot PersonalJesus who said socialism is american. that is simply not true. we are an economic power house, and for the well being of this country we should romote honest capitalism. no shit, a government needs to keep corporations honest. thats why we have a democracy that is meant to protect its citizens from dangers. agree/disagree?
Well, sharing, we don't totally disagree - just be careful about that whole "economic powerhouse" thing. Actually, the EU has us beat there in absolute dollars. In terms of growth - lots of countries beat us, like the P.R.C., Ireland and Vietnam. Income per capita? No, we're not number one there either - we're about fifteenth on the list.
Listen, it sounds that youre saying that a country can be either socialist or capitalist. That is simply not true - it can be both. Im not saying that socialism is good or bad but it works in some countries like in Scandinavia for example. There are many arguments to make why these countries have a strong economy but clearly socialism works there.
How is this a showdown? A rude host that talks over responses to his questions (must be a FOX thing) and a lame guest that gives the same talking points at every interview... move along folks... nothing to see here.
"Me and my fellow Republicans are just simple people from the South and you're a big city New Yorker..." that's almost exactly the same rhetoric that was being bandied about before the civil war.
mpost - Medicare is badly funded - but if you think we can't afford the 440-billion a year for medicare, how the heck do you think we can afford the private insurance companies, who currently deliver only 73 cents on the insurance dollar, compared to Medicare, which delivers over 90 cents on the tax dollar?
Badly funded? It's government run health care right? Now you want to the government to set up a program 4 times the size and you think that this time they'll get it right. please have your head examined. BTW it's not the 440 billion a year, perhaps you should look at where that liability will be in 10 years. the guberment sucks at everything.
Lol, and every single one of these plans are subsidized by the government in order to survive.
Medicare/SoSec: Ponzi schemes defined. I will never enjoy either of these.
Post office: $500,000,000/yr subsidized by Fed, and they still cannot compete with FedEx/UPS for packs
AmTrack: Never a profit, once. I would love to take a high speed rail up and down California, I would go to SD every weekend. However they refuse to do this (if public railways were open market, somebody already would have)
Ahh, stumbo, if you think back to your school days, was there anything special? Like did you maybe ride a bus that was a little shorter than the big buses all the other kids rode?
Yeah, stumbo, government programs and agencies are - this is amazing - government subsidized. That's really sort of the point. So next you'll be pointing out that our military just couldn't make it without government subsidies.
I envy you. You must live in a very, very special world.
i HATE when they do that shit. "alot of folks" or "alot of people" weiner shouldve asked them, oh yea?? NAME 3. because its all just bullshit so the fake reporter can ask whatever he wants. aaaaand fox news is nothing but fake reporters. XD
to argue for a single payer system based on the premise that people allegedly like medicare is disingenuous...medicare is for people over 65 and its part of the problem why healthcare is so expensive...good luck expanding that to the entire population...the country is broke! This debate needs an entirely different angle...cut cost in the current system...have interstate competition...allow doctors to charge up front for routine care...cosmetic surgery, not covered by insurance, cost goes down...
"Medicare is for people over 65 and it's part of the problem why HC is so expensive"
Yes, but not in the way you think. The taxpayers are already paying for the most expensive clients (the elderly, veterans and the poor) leaving the private HMOs to cherry pick only the young and healthy clients who rarely need treatment.
The reason single payer systems are cheaper (10% GDP vs. 16% GDP) is because they DON'T do it that way.
Huh? Medicare makes health care expensive? The single biggest rise in medical expenses in the last two decades has been private insurance.
Let's flip the tables - let Medicare cover everyone up to 65, and private insurance cover those 65 and older. I guarantee you'll see the price for seniors rise, and grandma will be living on cat food while crawling around with a broken hip.
"A lot of folks" are dumbfucks, who will talk very loudly & passionately about things they know absolutely NOTHING about.
Evidence: The scores of idiotic townhall protesters who would scream "Keep government out of my life! Don't take my medicare!"
Being an idiocracy is this country's PROBLEM. If people BELIEVE something stupid, because they don't know the FACTS, they should NOT be taken into consideration!
This idiot uses Medicare as his shining example of how great government health insurance is. Would someone please tell this assclown that Medicare is broke, they have zero money and no way to pay for future liabilities. This country is broke and Weiner wants to take on more liabilities? Does this make financial sense?
Hey jjrglobal Mr Oil and Gas Guy!! Medicare IS NOT BROKE and it will not be broke in the future if ASSHOLES like you will get out of the way of the American Peoples Needs and alllow Health Care Reform to PAss !! OH lets not forget who Broke this country over the last 30 Years since Regan and the Neocons gained power. It was REPUBS and the Religious Idiots on the Right !! STuff It DUDE
you are not in touch with reality if you dont realize our country ,including medicaire is totally out of money, It doesn't matter a whit how many names you call people , we are BROKE . get it.? probably not ,.As far as your left/ right blathering , your a fool , playing into the fake paradigm
Right this is not a bipatisan problem , this is a people problem . They are yanking our chain , destroying our country ,dem/repub alike , Join us at campaign for liberty and restore our individual liberties . peace
Medicare is not broke, but does have financial problems. One giant reason for these financial problems is how completely messed up health care is in this country due to the For-Profit structure of everything.
A prime example for this is the insane opposition to mandatory Electronic Medical Records. Having to take the same tests because you are at different hospitals... more tests = more money for the hospital.
yeah, you're right, as long as corporations are making profits, and playing craps with them on wall street, everything will work out fine. Just like it did last year around this time.
Especially if people are going into debt & bankruptcy because insurance premiums are rising 3 times faster than income levels.
Nope, because normal people with real money don't matter-just billionaires with hypothetical money.
It's not broke. Medicare still has a surplus in the trust fund, but is expected in the next ten years through the high cost of health care in the U.S to be underfunded. That's pretty much the goal of reforming the system, get cost controls, and stop the up spiral in costs. And seriously, when it comes down to it, medicare will not be in the red because anyone in medicare won't stand for it. We will fund it. Either through a raise in our payroll taxes that go to medicare, or controlling costs.
I like government. The United States Government is "Of the People, by the People, for the People". I hate pricks like cavuto spreading defeatism and trying to trick Americans into giving up on what rightfully belongs to them.
So healthcare is a right, Hey I want grocery store insurance, boy o boy steak and shrimp and baby potatoes mmm, no need to ask about the cost , Food is a right ,someone else can pick up the tab . Oh and housing ,my that has to be a right also. Anything left ? for without food and housing I will not be healthy very long , h.u.d. housing for everyone. Do you see where this is going? You don't have a right to other people resources, Grow up , and take care of youself ,give as much away as you like
oh please...half the people in this country make their living off of selling each other shit no one needs.
there is more than enough money to pay for bare essentials, but guess what? no one in this country is happy with bare essentials! do you think ambition and consumerism is dying here? hell no. people don't go to work for food and shelter-they go to work for cars, home improvement items, cell phones and various other luxuries-and in fact many of us MAKE our livings SELLING those things!
And who the hell has been selling this shit to them? The government? Nope. The corporations. The car companies have been pushing cadillacs and trucks. Because stupid fuckers still buy them. We have lost our minds!! Some of us know what is happening though. Right?
We demand single-payer because the current system has been proved to be an abject failure at providing quality care to all at a reasonable cost.
A system of national health insurance with everyone pooled together will bring down the costs of health care by eliminating shareholder profits, ad budgets, political contributions, and executive bonuses and the 'golden parachute' tax from the costs of policy holders' premiums. Plus, families won't have to go bankrupt just because their kid gets sick.
Hey genius. With the public option we would save 1 trillion dollars compared to your beloved health care. If you consider no more ceos getting 10 to 20 million a year for killing people. Or all the wasted man hours on paperwork to fuck people out of health care.
Actually, the bill will SPEND about a trillion over the next decade. The CBO says this, not me. And the deficit will increase by about $200 Billion. And large executive salaries are really a drop in the bucket compared to overall profits. Even if they cut exec. salaries, insurers wouldn't save much, really.
oh god your right ,cah for clunkers cut the paperwork down ,everyone who has ever dealt with them knows how streamlined their sysyem is .And I cant wat till all those rich people have to give up their millions to the super rich ,then we can look up at our gods and adore them as they dictate our portion
Just because mega-corporations aren't technically "the government" these dumbasses will pretty much let them do the exact thing they claim to be so afraid of-control all the means of production & wealth in our society.
If "government" tries to stop them from doing that, so that regular people have a chance not to be monopolized, they call it fascism!
Damn people are dumb. Thanks for your smart comment though.
You like the gov't? You like the fact that they steal money from your paycheck?(if you work) You like the fact that they start pointless, endless wars? You like the fact that corporations get more welfare than poor people? You like the fact that corporation paid lobbyists have such a strong influence on policy making?
Our gov't may have once been of, for, and by the people, but it isn't now. It's of, for, and by the banks and corporations.
You're a special one, aren't you? Did you know that your country and your government are two different things? I am a veteran of the military, and I love my country very much. You're the one who is unhappy. If you want socialized health care, more to England.
I have serious questions for you. If I steal money from you, to pay for some one else's doctor visit, is that wrong? Why/why not?
If the gov't steals money from you, to pay for my doctor visit, is that wrong? Why/Why not?
First of all you said steal money. The public health care would save tax payers 1 trillion dollars. You are already paying through the ass for uninsured people. But instead of them seeking treatment when they have the flu. They are forced to wait till the have pneumonia. Which costs you more. Make intelligent factual statements..
1. I don't mind that they "tax" me and take it from my paycheck to invest in public goods. Unlike you, I like roads to drive on, clean air to breathe, cops & firefighters to protect myself and my property, sanitize water and food, etc.
2. No, I don't like wars unless we're attacked. But I do like law enforcement to protect my and society's welfare.
Gone, man, gone! But I agree, Universal is best, and unfortunately we went to our current 'system' (actually, it's many systems, as apparently health insurance is a states' rights' issue!).

if you want socialism, go to another country. america should stay capitalist. most poeple who support socialism ahvent even lived in a real socialist country. if you ever want to experience that, let me take you back in time to Soviet Russia.
sharinganclan213 2 years ago
It's not capitalist when larger companies are able to run amok unchecked therefore crushing competition. Real capitalism comes when there are some governmental supports in place to bust up monopolies and keep people honest. It's our responsibility as thinking individuals not to make things like socialism be the boogieman while we turn a blind eye to corporate tyranny and greed which greatly diminish the quality of life of the poor and working class.
SquallCloud 2 years ago 2
"One of the worst fallacies in the field of economics—propagated by Karl Marx and accepted by almost everyone today, including many businessmen—is that the development of monopolies is an inescapable and intrinsic result of the operation of a free, unregulated economy. In fact, the exact opposite is true. It is a free market that makes monopolies impossible."
Government regulations and lobbyist create monopolies, not free markets. Ask PG&E or AmTrack.
stumbo2w 2 years ago
You know what? You're right. The best my students behave is when I give them a "free market classroom" and let them do whatever they want unchecked, telling them that I in no way intend to impede their desire for social "wealth". It's like I don't even need to be there to govern my class. They just do what they are supposed to because I say it nicely. .... ..... and then I woke up.
SquallCloud 2 years ago
Not sure what form of Price/Demand regulate your classroom.
If anything a free for all classroom more resembles our "entitlement" system of "take what you need, you don't have to earn it"
stumbo2w 2 years ago
My point was that if you do not have a governing body to regulate things, children/profit seeking entities will do whatever they want to get more fun/monetary reward. You can't ask people to curtail their wants out of the kindness of their heart and just make that your policy. Capitalism that is not tempered with some level of responsibility (and ethics) is what led to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and is what is keeping Americans from quality low cost health care.
SquallCloud 2 years ago
I disagree but respect your opinion.
I'm not sure why people think health care is the exception.
stumbo2w 2 years ago
Enslavement fueled capitalism was in effect far longer than the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. You can't at once extol the virtues of the government (all men are created equal in the Constitution) and then indict it by saying that it was then decided that Blacks were not people because those were the same folks and that was the same entity. The slave holding proto-lobbyists along with America's slave holding "founding fathers" compartmentalized their ideals in favor of greed.
SquallCloud 2 years ago
My point exactly, all government regulation comes as the result of lobbyist who use it to their advantage.
There is a little saying "Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
I don't understand how people think that more government regulation will magically be in the name of American citizens rather than the lobbyist who fund them.
This is the definition of insanity: Repeating the same action expecting a different result.
stumbo2w 2 years ago
... Then the answer is not to let everyone do what they want but to reform the system of lobbying so that it's not as easily corruptible. The answer to making sure food and drug manufacturers aren't killing us is not to do away with the rules but to actually follow them and force profiteers out of the business of setting the standards to begin with.
SquallCloud 2 years ago
sharingan - you're kidding?
47f0 2 years ago 3
we are all mixed, some socialism and capitalism. but i was referring to the idiot PersonalJesus who said socialism is american. that is simply not true. we are an economic power house, and for the well being of this country we should romote honest capitalism. no shit, a government needs to keep corporations honest. thats why we have a democracy that is meant to protect its citizens from dangers. agree/disagree?
sharinganclan213 2 years ago
Well, sharing, we don't totally disagree - just be careful about that whole "economic powerhouse" thing. Actually, the EU has us beat there in absolute dollars. In terms of growth - lots of countries beat us, like the P.R.C., Ireland and Vietnam. Income per capita? No, we're not number one there either - we're about fifteenth on the list.
But hey, at least we're leading in debt.
It's good to be number one.
47f0 2 years ago
i have a gut feeling everyting wil just worse here in the US. we already have a lot of haters.
sharinganclan213 2 years ago
Listen, it sounds that youre saying that a country can be either socialist or capitalist. That is simply not true - it can be both. Im not saying that socialism is good or bad but it works in some countries like in Scandinavia for example. There are many arguments to make why these countries have a strong economy but clearly socialism works there.

Medicare is bankrupt! $440 billion a year for medicare, it does not take a genius to figure out that we cannot afford a public "option"...
mpost81 2 years ago
mpost - Medicare is badly funded - but if you think we can't afford the 440-billion a year for medicare, how the heck do you think we can afford the private insurance companies, who currently deliver only 73 cents on the insurance dollar, compared to Medicare, which delivers over 90 cents on the tax dollar?
47f0 2 years ago
Badly funded? It's government run health care right? Now you want to the government to set up a program 4 times the size and you think that this time they'll get it right. please have your head examined. BTW it's not the 440 billion a year, perhaps you should look at where that liability will be in 10 years. the guberment sucks at everything.
mpost81 2 years ago
Medicare, post office, public education, Am track, social security, medicaid... yep they have a pretty good track record alright.
mpost81 2 years ago
Medicare - 27% more efficient at delivering health care dollars to providers.
Post Office - Less than fifty cents, and someone will come to my house and my brother in California has the letter four days later - a bargain.
Public Education - I'm guessing you're one that fell through the cracks - too bad.
AmTrack - all public transportation is a poor stepchild in a country where we all have the god-given right to kill Arabs for our SUVs.
SoSec - has kept a lot of seniors out of tent parks.
47f0 2 years ago
Lol, and every single one of these plans are subsidized by the government in order to survive.
Medicare/SoSec: Ponzi schemes defined. I will never enjoy either of these.
Post office: $500,000,000/yr subsidized by Fed, and they still cannot compete with FedEx/UPS for packs
AmTrack: Never a profit, once. I would love to take a high speed rail up and down California, I would go to SD every weekend. However they refuse to do this (if public railways were open market, somebody already would have)
stumbo2w 2 years ago
Ahh, stumbo, if you think back to your school days, was there anything special? Like did you maybe ride a bus that was a little shorter than the big buses all the other kids rode?
Yeah, stumbo, government programs and agencies are - this is amazing - government subsidized. That's really sort of the point. So next you'll be pointing out that our military just couldn't make it without government subsidies.
I envy you. You must live in a very, very special world.

to argue for a single payer system based on the premise that people allegedly like medicare is disingenuous...medicare is for people over 65 and its part of the problem why healthcare is so expensive...good luck expanding that to the entire population...the country is broke! This debate needs an entirely different angle...cut cost in the current system...have interstate competition...allow doctors to charge up front for routine care...cosmetic surgery, not covered by insurance, cost goes down...
Sourcererdolphin 2 years ago

I guarantee you'll see the price for seniors rise, and grandma will be living on cat food while crawling around with a broken hip.

sailfished 2 years ago
Medicare is not broke, but does have financial problems. One giant reason for these financial problems is how completely messed up health care is in this country due to the For-Profit structure of everything.
A prime example for this is the insane opposition to mandatory Electronic Medical Records. Having to take the same tests because you are at different hospitals... more tests = more money for the hospital.
Real reform is needed.
ehkinoh 2 years ago
yeah, you're right, as long as corporations are making profits, and playing craps with them on wall street, everything will work out fine. Just like it did last year around this time.
Especially if people are going into debt & bankruptcy because insurance premiums are rising 3 times faster than income levels.
Nope, because normal people with real money don't matter-just billionaires with hypothetical money.
zndprophet 2 years ago
It's not broke. Medicare still has a surplus in the trust fund, but is expected in the next ten years through the high cost of health care in the U.S to be underfunded. That's pretty much the goal of reforming the system, get cost controls, and stop the up spiral in costs. And seriously, when it comes down to it, medicare will not be in the red because anyone in medicare won't stand for it. We will fund it. Either through a raise in our payroll taxes that go to medicare, or controlling costs.

FairelyGushing 2 years ago
Hey genius. With the public option we would save 1 trillion dollars compared to your beloved health care. If you consider no more ceos getting 10 to 20 million a year for killing people. Or all the wasted man hours on paperwork to fuck people out of health care.
RodgersRevolution 2 years ago
Actually, the bill will SPEND about a trillion over the next decade. The CBO says this, not me. And the deficit will increase by about $200 Billion. And large executive salaries are really a drop in the bucket compared to overall profits. Even if they cut exec. salaries, insurers wouldn't save much, really.

Exactly-it's about time someone admitted that!
