It's called indoctrination. I was taught from a very young age to sing missionary songs. The more you practice believing something, the less ludicrous it seems. There's enormous pressure on these young missionaries to conform and to believe. Mormon girl often look down on Mormon boys who didn't go on a mission. Some missionaries honestly believe the church line, but most of them were raised to that belief.
becarefull mormons HAVE TO DO THAT THEY DOINT HAVE A CHOICE IF THE WANT TO BECOME A GOD, they are NOT CHRISTAIN,THEY ARE A CULT, THE BOOK OF MORMON WAS WRITTEN BY A MAN WHO WAS AN ADULTER AND CHILD MOLESTOR
Mar 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
@tonguesofgrace quoting scripture means nothing to those of us who do not believe it to be anything other than myth and legend. You are wasting your time. You might as well quote Harry Potter.
How can you have a mic so close to your mouth yet have such crappy audio. I would have watched it if I could hear it without turning my speakers up to 100%
i,m catholic...and what can i say is these kind of sects make religion looks bad,,,btw Joseph Smith was an atheist ....for this reason he lie on that stupid book and native americans fake story shit... Better atheists than mormons
Don't judge this book by its cover or by what you might think you know about it. Take some time to read it. We have read it numerous times and are posting topics here to help you as you read. As Herbert Spencer once said, There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance that principle is contempt prior to investigation.
The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible and is a record of God's dealings with His chosen people in the New World. The main purpose of the Book of Mormon is "to the convincing of Jew and Gentile that JESUS is the CHRIST, the ETERNAL GOD, manifesting himself unto all nations." (Book of Mormon Title Page) It was written by ancient American prophets for our day (Mormon 8:35) and is an American testament of the Lord Jesus Christ.
@LDSapologist71 How do you explain the complete lack of ANY evidence in ANY form that ANY claim in or about the Book of Mormon is true? There is NO archaeology, or independent evidence. None. There isn't even evidence to misconstrue or misuse. There is nothing.
So many point's in this video are off key. Two being, this is The Book Of Mormon NOT a bilbe. We (Mormon's) also belive the Bible to be the word of God as also The Book Of Mormon. Also the Church does not try and 'make you become Mormon' conversion is within oneselve.
Did you actually watch the video? I stated that this was the book of mormon and not the bible at 0:46. The TV ad promised a bible. It's close enough anyway. It reads like the bible and is just as strange.
"'the Church does not try and 'make you become Mormon' "
Three pairs of missionaries have sat on my sofa and tried to convert me to mormonism!
Have you actully watched your vid l8tly? at 4.20 you state 'they deliver THESE BIBLE'S to people' At 1.50 you state 'I do seem to have GOT a free BIBLE' At 2.20 you state 'the tablets were lost' were did you get this idea? Oh and the BOM was not given to Joseph Smith. He recived instruction as to were the GOLDEN PLATES were. Joseph Smith translated the plates into English. (which is the BOM as we have it now) I hope this puts it more into context for sincere people searching for explantions.
Yes I have and you are right, but when I said "I do seem to have GOT a free BIBLE'" I was attempting to be humorous since it looked, smelled and read like a real bible.
If you believe the Joseph Smith story you are VERY gullible. It is pure nonsense... plain and simple. There is no other way to say it (sorry!).
Well I find it very sad that you view someone you do not know as ''gullible'' I also c u failed 2 answer y u asked 4 a Bible in teh first place. Oh, and tell me so u view EVERYONE that belives in God ''gullible'' also, or jus Mormon's. I eman cing as u have no belieif.
I do not need to know you to make the statement that you are gullible. It is enough to know that you believe that Joseph Smith was given magic stones by an invisible being which allowed him to look into a magic hat and have the book of mormon revealed to him, which (incidentally) is written in Jacobian English, which is weird because Joseph Smith was not born in that era, but it does make it sound more like a bible.
''magic stones'' haha, do u actully really belive that defintion? What a joke! ''magic hat''? were did u get that statment from? oh and ''Jacobian English'' source 4 that also please?
Jacobean English (I spelled it incorrectly earlier) refers to prose written during the reign of King James 1.
Maybe you've heard of the King James Version of the bible, KJV?
Just reading the BOM should persuade you that it is written in the same linguistic style as the KJV. It's there for you to see for yourself. You don't need a source, read it for yourself. Maybe god speaks like that!?
Oh and also, I am well aware what u said on 0.46, i was reffering to later on as u see above. You make it sound to people as if the BOM is ANOTHER bible, it is not it is ANOTHER teastament of Jesus Christ, Im not saying u r sayin it is a Bible, but it cud sound that way 2 sum that dnt know better.
Also u cannot MAKE anyone become a Mormon it jus does not work like that. if you feel they was forcing you then you got the wrong impression. Can I ask you, why if u have allready made up yr mind their is no God. (and SEEMS you allready have) Why ask for a Bible?
They were not forcing me into anything, but their clear intention was to convert me to the religion/cult, otherwise why would I have been visited on three separate occasions?
Admittedly I enjoyed arguing with them on all three occasions, but that is beside the point, I just like to argue!
I like your open mindedness. Sorry, but you have no right in saying what you say is true, I am not sure what to believe in anymore, i am a mormon, and there's no way in prove what is truth and what is lie, you for example cant prove that God existence or disprove it, open your mind and think about it.
You can't disprove many things, but you can say that their is no evidence to support them. There are infinitely many hypothetical concepts that have as much proof as god.
Just think about the beliefs of the mormon church. Do they really sound objectively rational?
@LyricalSh0t seems to me you are a agnostic......I'm in the same shoes as you though....open minded.....don't believe everything the mormon church says is true, but there is a posibility....and I also still grow up in a mormon household (not as molly mormon but still mormon background) after this past year I don't go to church anymore and consider myself a agnostic....good luck to you in your search.
they respond so well because they have been brain washed since a younge age and went to MTC lol. They are well prepared to answer any question, and they all have the same answers for any question...
Really ''brain washed' ? I'm a new convert was not bought up in the Church and have a strong belief I KNOW the Church is true. So how do u explain my conversion? and BTW please do not say I am brainwashed also, u do not know me. :-)
You know the church is true. Good for you. What is your evidence of this or is it just personal revelation. Maybe the creator of the entire universe thought he would reveal the truth of the church to you...
You have made up your mind, so lets not continue this any further. I unlike u do not enjoy arguing for the sake of it! I have better things to do wiv my life/time. I,m not going to discuss God wiv sum1 that assumes everything about people, their simply is no point.
You make the bold statement that you KNOW the church is true and decline to back it up when challenged to do so. That speaks volumes about your 'KNOWLEDGE', but you are welcome to your beliefs if they make you feel good. Just don't try to tell me that you KNOW something if you are not prepared to justify your claim.
Ok, I'm going to say this only once. My very first post to you was as in MY VIEW u was giving people the emperssion of the my Chruch that was wrong. You just indirectly admited that in your previous post's. Please do not argue this, cuz its how it is. So in conclusion I have achevied what I set out 2 hopefully do, CLARIFY things to un self assuming people.
I did not come on here to backup anything to YOU. Reason being you have allready made up your mind. It is also evident that you seek to jus 2 argue a fact u have admited, so im not backing up anything to u. I know what I know thats all that matters to me. Oh and btw, I have heard jus about everything their is 2 hear from Critics of the Church etc, so please save your time 4 sum1 that will belive you before looking in2 things 4 themselves. to me that is ''gullible''
3rd time askin, did u ask 4 a Bible? Actully it was part of a process I took before my conversion to look at both what the critics say about the Church.
The video was posted on April 14th 2007. That's 908 days ago! I don't exactly remember, but I think the TV ad was for a bible. It's funny that you choose to argue this point and decline to make further comments about your belief in the church other than you just know you are right which, by the way, is not a very compelling argument...
Well funny how u point out 2 me and ask me if I had actullyw atched yr vid wen u obv needed 2 re watch it yrself! I have allready explained why I refuse to justify my beliefs to YOU. ideas about the LDS Church? u wnat to know more about the Church? Go and look on our website. This discussion is now over. If you reply to me anymore on this thread i will jus ignore it. Take care :-)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Seems to me - you got an impression by the Holy Ghost when you saw that commercial - God spoke to you - you listened and called for a Book of Mormon -good for you. You say you were going to go to church - good for you - now test "faith" - Pray about it - live it "experiment upon MY word" Jesus says. "The TRUTH shall make you free" - free from secularism. I will pray for you.
Personally I'd like to see your proof behind the "one planet" argument. I always wonder what it would be like to spend 24 hours inside the mind of an atheist... how sad, depressing and lonely it must be.
When I die, someday and I'm not reunited with my relatives, and I cease to exist and have no more thoughts, I guess I won't really care how I've lived my life. So meanwhile, I think I'll live my life the way I feel good living it... by believing when I die, I will see my dead relatives.
Not at all. I am a happy well adjusted individual, having lots of fun and making the most of my life before I die,
I think you are right. Certain individuals seem unable to face up to reality. Religion offers great comfort (false comfort) to these people.
I am just not wired up the same as you. I need evidence. Religion just doesn't make sense to me. There are too many things that don't make any sense. So instead I choose to face mortality.
I actually used to be one of those guys. I had a great time and I don't regret it. Helped me learn Spanish and lots of other stuff. But since then I have learned more and subsequently come to my senses. I now consider myself an atheist anarchist. I don't believe in institutions of authority, because as you point out, they do more harm than good. While religion may help some people feel comfort, it's ultimately false and an escape from having to deal with reality.
why would you want to downgrade a religion like mormanisim ,you should encourage it. There very nice people, they cant smoke or drink they highly follow the commandments. and your whole imaginenoreligion bullshit. why? dont you see the good in religion the good it does to people. It does waaaaaaaaaaay more good than bad. what im trying to say is you shouldnt try to turn mormons into atheist, you should encourage the religion, doesnt mean you have to become mormon. peace out
They are very nice people, and I used to hold a similar view to your own. The problem is that moderates 'enable' fundamentalists. They provide some level of tolerance for those who are often the least tolerant and mostmisguided.
Take the issue of stem cell research. It's progress is being delayed by the actions of religiously motivated objectors.
I often tune in to a christian radio station. This station recommends forgetting about global warming since the earth is a 'disposable planet' and that Jesus is returning soon anyway - the whole planet will be destroyed by god in the rapture etc...
This is what bothers me about religion, magical thinking that clouds rational decision making.
again my point was not religios beliefs and how they slow down stem cell research and talk about global warming. Its the standards of the church that would make someone into a better person. I visited a lds church once i have to admit it was kind of fun. only problem was it was 3 HOURS LONG!!!!!!!!!
thanks for the explanation i get what your trying to say. But my point was there is a high D.U.I rate in the U.S. if people start becoming mormon they cant drink so that rate would go down, and if gang members would become lds than crime rate would go down, they cant smoke so maybe cancer and death wouldnt be so high, etc... thats kinda what i was trying to say
I agree, religion does have many benefits for some people.
Astrology, numerology and past life regression also benefit some people. I met a numerologist at a psychic fair who claimed that numerology helped him beat his alcoholism.
My point is that, on balance, I think religion does more harm than good. It retards scientific progress and opens the door for all sorts of magical thinking.
Incidentally I have also attended mormon church twice. They all seemed very friendly.
i still do not see how it does more harm than good. I see that you despise religion like christianity and any kind of religious belief in jesus or god, im real curious to hear or see your take on religion like scientology or buddhism both of which are beyond crazy
no i mean i dont see how religion does more harm to a PERSON than good. I know religion is bad in a way there is wars over it and all the kind of stuff but i think its good for someone like an alcoholic or a killer or a drug attic to find religion. i hear many stories of religion helping them. Ya it affects politics in a GOOD WAY, if an atheist ran for president he wouldnt stand no chance whatsoever. take mitt romney for example hes a mormon look how far he got, so relgioin helps politics
The fact that an atheist has no hope of election in America right now says a lot, but it doesn't really show that religion is good for politics. It just shows that having christian credentials is good for a candidate in 'bible-thumping' America.
I was arguing that religion is bad for society. I concede that it may be beneficial to some people, although the real benefits come from the suppport network that religion offers people.
no i am not joking, thats what i meant religion helps a canadite have a better chance of winning an election than an atheist does and there is no way you can disagree with that, and if you do, give me a president that was atheist. and i also dont see how its bad for society. I remember a while ago you
were talking about global warming and a christian radio station disregarding it. now lets say for example the christian station was actually correct, and the rapture did come. would you actually blame them for saying that? and if they were wrong how could it affect a whole society? you think all religions are gonna say "ok im not gonna save the world becauase jesus is coming" NO! that is just bs.
lets get back to the mormon religion since thats what the video is about, you say religion doesnt help society. well isnt people society? we talked about mormons and no alocohal and killing and drugs. You did agree with me that they are good people, they also have this thing called the law of chasity which is no sex until marriage, dont you agree that thats a good thing to follow because itll prevent problems like rape, abortion, people at a young age having babies, young girls lives beingruined
this whole conversation began with the mormon religion. I just wish instead of you saying how crazy the beliefs of this religion is and how you discouraged it. I wish you explained stuff like the standards of the church, the no alocohal no drugs, no sex before marriage, the family morales they have, how nice they are and friendly, and how someone could benifit from these standards. I just hate wen people say mormons are crazy because there not, there good people and they set a good example.
with no Mormon church and no book of Mormon scriptures There would be no Curse Of Cain Doctrine I wish that was true because I am black and this curse of Cain doctrine is inside the Mormon scriptures to this day and the Mormons believe it is missing from the holy bible The pearl of great price. This is were the Curse of Cain doctrine is.The book of Mormon also preaches racist doctrine against the Indians. All that sounds like trash to me I read the BoM 8 times and prayed its lies its not from God.
Moses 5:16-41,Moses 7:8,Moses 7:22,Abraham 1:21-24 and Abraham 1:26-27 This is The Curse of Cain doctrine in Mormon scriptures TODAY every one go read you will see the seed of Cain getting cursed with Black skin and not being aloud to get the priesthood. And Joseph Smith taught the church that the slaves in the south were the sons of HAM who is HAM?HAM was Noah's son who married a Canaanite women on Noah's ark the Mormon scriptures teach that is how the curse stayed on the earth GO READ
Book of Mormon curses set on the Indians this is so valuable for the world and every Indian to know.2 Nephi 5:21,1 Nephi 12:23,Jacob 3:5,Jacob 3:8,Alma 3:6,Mormon 5:15 and 3 Nephi 2:15 after you read all of these scriptures in the Book of mormon you will see it is racist agains the INDIANS.". . . wherefore, as they were white and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them (2 Nephi 5:21)."
Oh yeah, your invisble friend that you talk to, objects to homosexuals.
That makes sense. God creates homosexuals and then says don't be gay homos! Come on man you know this stuff is bs, surely you can see it. Santa Claus is a nice idea, but sooner or later we realise it makes no sense, but is Joseph Smith writing the bom any less absurd.
He put magic stones in a hat and saw angels. You think this really happened. Can you imagine someone videoing this on their cell?
I checked out your link. It seems you regard me as a mormon hater. Nope, I am a religion despiser!
ALL RELIGION is nonsense, not just mormonism. Your beliefs are no more whacky than the mainstream christians, but they are whacky nevertheless.
I simply find the belief in extraordinary myths with nothing other than a sacred text to be highly questionable. No doubt you are all nice people, but you still object to homosexuals and still have some crazy dogma.
If you are talking about the book of Mormon, then yes I read the beginning. After about 500 instances of "and so it came to pass" I gave up. If this stuff is the word of an all powerful god then we are in deep shit!
It is clearly the ramblings of an active imagination.
those two young men that you are talking about that are serving their god and jesus christ are amazing young men they are spending two years of their life that they would not even have if it were not for god so therefore to show their faith and to somewhat try to repay him (this is almost next to impossible for if it was not for him we would not be and we would have nothing) and the money thing he again gave us everything
if it was not for him we would not have money also he created everthing therefor it is his so we are just giving a small portion of money back to him to help the growth of the only true church on the face of the earth
read revelations in a real Bible and you'll see that mormons and all other types of christianity that add things like praying to mary and the saints are not of God
Well, you enjoy it then, but for me I am unable to pretend that I buy into this stuff. I like a sing song and a good social gathering, and I'm all for being nice to everyone and helping people out. All that stuff is great. Church can offer a great support network and offer a sense of community, but let's face facts - the bible is ancient nonsense, the book of mormon is modern nonsense, and all the new revelations of the latter day saint prophets are mind numbingly bizarre.
alright then, i am sure you are a great person, but i just have to have a sense that there is something more than...this....but thank you very much for your opinion...you really do seem like a nice person:)
I'm about to watch part two(and check out other videos of yours as well),but I wanted to say this is a great video.I am a Christian, which means my emotions outweigh my intellect. But all the Atheists I've known don't have that crutch.Incredibly smart, full of common sense, and the refusal to be bullied by fear.I hope one day,we Christians will taste the freedom that you have.Until then, thanks for making the video and for not letting fear and ignorance get the best of you. :)
tru Christianity iz the belief of Jesus and wut He did for all humanity on the cross...this weekend, Sunday, iz the day of celebrating Jesus' resurrection of the dead...He iz the first to be resurrected by Hiz Father, God...check out ur local "Bible Believing Church" or a christian non-denominational church this Sunday and u will see...
...What do u hav 2 loze???...Jesus luvz u, my friend...jus az much az the atheist.
I have my precious time to lose, listening to a boring sermon about some guy who lived 2000 years ago and had embellished stories made up about his life. I have already attended, baptist church, mormon church, jehovah temple and catholic church. The mormons were the friendliest bunch. I did not manage to persuade anyone that their beliefs were unfounded, but I will keep trying!
You can try saving souls. I will try liberating minds.
Most people would tell an unsuspecting person who is about to be defrauded of the mistake they are about to make. Are they trying to "make a convert" of the person? No, they are just pointing out a possible mistake someone is about to invest in.
Likewise, atheists like myself (former fundie) would like theists to just be honest with themselves for their own benefit.
I guess those of us (like myself) that wish to 'convert' theists are motivated by the freedom of thought that it brings. I don't like the idea of people wasting their lives, hoping for more in the next life, when this is all there is. I want people to wake up and realise we are extremely lucky to be alive, to stop following false ideologies.
since 'outer darkness' is too long for me to say I just say darkness. I believe in three realms of afterlife, dreamworld, void, nightmare world. Dreamworld is where good people go; void is where neutral, atheist or any unworthy people go; and nightmare world is where bad, wicked and assholes of life go! Let's see three kingdoms, celestial, terestrial, telestial... odd, ok. Celestial is like best of the good, Terestrial is like the good but lazy, Telestial is like the good intended but bad.
A reason Mormonism should not be in the media, Mormons will get flamed horribly! Mormons are saints like any other Christian religion, just like Supernaturalism is a belief along with Wicca, Judiasm, Muslim, Taoism, Bhuddism and Shintoism. Supernaturalists are comfortably weird being they revere dreams more than most would. They think its an afterlife, I am one and I think it is frickin cool! I'm also Mormon btw but I don't roll with the three kingdoms of glory and 'outer darkness'.
I like this. Rather then bash a religion, you were fair enough to hear them out... and then bashed them. LOL I am not an atheist (I do believe in religion and God), but I am against religious structers with weird Dogmas of practices.
Aparantly when you have an accent like that.. it doesn't matter what you say, offensive or not.. It's stinkin hillarious.... how do they get away with these things??? LOL
First off I want to say I'm Mormon. That aside, I thought that this was one of the more respectfull vidieos put on you tube in disagreement with my faith. It may sound strange, but I appreciate the way you have treated the subject. So many others use hate and Ad Homenim statements. You really explain yourself.
I happen to agree you have a pretty laid back tone regarding religion, which is really quite good. With me i happen to get very upset very quickly about it.
I highly recommend using the Socratic method to persuade ppl out of their delusion. youtube "socratic method and Christianity" and you will see what I'm talking about.
I was referring to mormons, but have also been visited by jehovah's witnesses and received their bible and visited their "temple". They are a much more sour faced bunch of people than the mormon's, but they're all deluded.
Yeah I've given both the witnesses and the mormons a chance on numerous occasions. Sometimes I've invited them into my home, other times I've stopped on the street to talk to them, and every single time they've either lied or been unable to answer my questions.
I've even agreed to read passages from their books in exchange for them answring my questions, but the mormons didn't hold up their end of the bargain, and the witnesses claim to have proof of their claims in the bible but somehow never manage to bring their bible with them, even when they have everything else and say that they will bring the copy with them next time.
They hand delivered it, and stayed for an hour and a half until they got bored. I have since visited the mormon church twice, and had extensive discussions with the missionaries, but it is like talking to a wall. They are very deeply rooted in the whole belief system and logical arguments just bounce right off them.
Hmmm. Maybe it was just the witnesses who visited me who avoid bringing their bibles, or perhaps they bring them when invited by someone who phones as they are more likely to be able to convert them. You are referring to jehovah's witnesses and not mormons right?
if you flip to the back of the book you will see a picture of the twin engine speed boat that brought jesus to the americas, but even more interesting is the picture of jesus and moses at the horse races, when jesus said to moses "come forth" and moses came fifth and everybody lost their money! man, was jesus ever pissed at moses!
True. It's good to have time on your hands.I get to do stuff that interests me, but there is a reason it took 7 months to get around to going to their church. I often don't have time on my hands since I am teaching people to fly most weekends...
It must be exhilirating to believe in this happy BS. and have your thoughts no longer ruled by reality but by your wild imaginations. Yes it must be exciting and foolish all at the same time. If you are sailing with a ship full of fools. Then who is the fool?
lol, good luck! do you think we should do Athiesm door to door? we shoud dress up smart, go to Salt Lake, knock on doors and say 'hello, have you heard the bad news?'
Yes we should, but it's GOOD NEWS. There is no hell, we can live our lives without the fear of eternal damnation and noone is watching us 24/7. I would say that was good news, wouldn't you.
It seems that there has to be something behind all of this Mormon stuff if they are willing to do so much to teach it..Why not be open to possibilities that seem unreasonable???
I am open to many things, but as Christopher Hitchens states in his latest book (god is not Great) "exceptional claims demand exceptional evidence", and religion offers me nothing more than a holy book. Maybe you know something I don't. Feel free to share!
Christopher Hitchens comments are a double edged sword for you guys. I look at the enormity of the Universe and the perfect shape of every planet and the uniqueness of our own planet, and wonder....How could this have just "poof" come into being randomly. And as for evidence, any evidence that points towards evolution are only theories. Nobody really knows. I would say that their is just as much possibility evidence that God created everything as there it that he didn't.
I was raised in the LDS church, as a young man served a mission in New Zealand, and have had experiences to numerous and to sacred to discuss, I returned got married to a wonderful woman and have had two children who are the love of my life. I have a very peaceful feeling that accompanies me as live my life. I have my witness. If you don't believe God that's fine, I guess I just don't know what your real intention is speaking to missionaries.
Many people may well think I am on a spiritual search. They would be wrong. I am simply fascinated how grown adults can believe in magic stones, golden plates that vanish intoo the heavens, resurrection etc etc. Religion makes exceptional claims yet only offers a dusty old book as evidence.
I can understand where you are saying, we come from two different realms of thinking. But honestly if you did see the "Magic Stones" and the "Gold Plates" would that help you believe in something spiritual? Yes these are exceptional claims, but what about the universe? can you explain it? After studying it for some time Einstein and most of the great scientist in the passed 500yrs all believed in a supreme being who organized it. Are you asking for too much?
Actually Einstein was most probably a pantheist (look it up). In a quote from 1954 he says, "I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."
You asked for a Bible and got a Book of Mormon? Hm, someone messed up. To make things clear, the Book of Mormon is not touted as part of the Bible, bust a supporter of it.
Youtube isn't the place for religous belief, do you have your own thoughts about the truth and want to say them on somwhere it was meant for? (freewebs dot com/avcdebate)
I haven't given up on the mormons... I've just been a bit busy with the Jehovah's witnesses recently, even went to their 'kingdom hall'. The mormons know my position and have still invited me to their church, which I will do eventually..
I think you're completely wasting your time trying to convert Mormons into Atheists. They are products of a mind conditioning program that would make Catholic Jesuits go green with envy.
I have to admit though of all the Religious people I've met; they are the most happy-go-lucky & charming people you'll get. No dour & fire and brimstone types here. I think that's why they get so many converts; people want to be like Donnie & Marie in spite of the fact their Founder was known con-artist and philanderer; their Mormon theology is laughably ridiculous and has no basis in fact archeologically or historically.
I forgot to mention that you should ask them their history of why they got chased out of New York, Ohio & Illinois and eventually settled in Utah. It was because they were tarred & feathered and burnt out wherever they went by King James Bible-bashers who could stand their 'heresy'.
The video states he was promised a Bible, but given a Book of Mormon. As a former missionary I can say we had plenty of bibles to give away, and did give them away to those who requested.
I certainly hope you've been open with the missionaries about your purposes in meeting with them. I would hope you'd disclose your thoughts about their beliefs being "ridiculous" up front, and that you'd let them know about your posting of this video online. It seems if you kept these things from them it would be rather backhanded.
As there remains to be seen a "part 2" to your post, it appears as though the meetings with them have ceased?
Hello all: The Prophet Joseph Smith here on Kolob. I just wanted to let all you know that it was all a big lie. I made it all up, the first vision, the gold plates, the book of Abraham, and on. Moroni was in on it with me, so you can blame him too.
inr, I plan to put together a piece on the Book of Mormon itself. I'll try and get it done quickly. But various other items of my life may momentarily eclipse the priority. So no promises, at present, on a time frame.
I would be delighted to engage in a discussion about all things mormon. I have yet to read the book of mormon and will try to reserve judgement until then, BUT I doubtful that I will have any great revelations
If you haven't read the BOM you're on par with 95% of Mormons. Note that most Mormon doctrine really doesn't come from the BOM anyway so reading it won't help you much. Mormons have prophets that might put out scripture, and also some sorts of doctrine are known by a sort of "group culture osmosis" but might not even be specifically written down. Being Mormon is more a lifestyle than a religion.
That's not really true. A substantial portion of the membership took, and completed, our prophet's recent recomendation to start and finish reading the Book of Mormon from between mid-05 to the end of 05. Certainly the number isn't the ideal of 100%, but I'm nigh certain it's significantly greater than 5%.
Interesting. Though I seriously doubt "substantial portion". Most members probably aren't even active. And either way my point stands that reading the BOM is nearly pointless--you can read it (somehow managing to stay awake) and still have no idea what Mormons are really about. Most key doctrine is not found in the BOM.
All the key doctrines are found in the Book of Mormon. Your inability to see them there isn't proof they aren't there, rather it's evidence that you don't understand what you are reading, though I doubt you've read much of the book.
Perhaps you could show us all where the descriptions of the nature of heaven(s) and salvation are in the BOM? He'll hear about that from the Elders soon so he might as well read it in the BOM first, right? So where in the BOM can we read about the various Kingdoms and what's required to reach them? I don't mean a verse or two that might be stretched to support a lesson point, I mean the details of the doctrine itself. Hint: he should understand it just from reading the BOM if it's there.
I am a satanist.

LDSapologist71 2 years ago
The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible and is a record of God's dealings with His chosen people in the New World. The main purpose of the Book of Mormon is "to the convincing of Jew and Gentile that JESUS is the CHRIST, the ETERNAL GOD, manifesting himself unto all nations." (Book of Mormon Title Page) It was written by ancient American prophets for our day (Mormon 8:35) and is an American testament of the Lord Jesus Christ.
LDSapologist71 2 years ago
@LDSapologist71 How do you explain the complete lack of ANY evidence in ANY form that ANY claim in or about the Book of Mormon is true? There is NO archaeology, or independent evidence. None. There isn't even evidence to misconstrue or misuse. There is nothing.

So many point's in this video are off key. Two being, this is The Book Of Mormon NOT a bilbe. We (Mormon's) also belive the Bible to be the word of God as also The Book Of Mormon. Also the Church does not try and 'make you become Mormon' conversion is within oneselve.
defectedsound 2 years ago
Did you actually watch the video? I stated that this was the book of mormon and not the bible at 0:46. The TV ad promised a bible. It's close enough anyway. It reads like the bible and is just as strange.
"'the Church does not try and 'make you become Mormon' "
Three pairs of missionaries have sat on my sofa and tried to convert me to mormonism!
imaginenoreligion 2 years ago
Have you actully watched your vid l8tly? at 4.20 you state 'they deliver THESE BIBLE'S to people' At 1.50 you state 'I do seem to have GOT a free BIBLE' At 2.20 you state 'the tablets were lost' were did you get this idea? Oh and the BOM was not given to Joseph Smith. He recived instruction as to were the GOLDEN PLATES were. Joseph Smith translated the plates into English. (which is the BOM as we have it now) I hope this puts it more into context for sincere people searching for explantions.
defectedsound 2 years ago
Yes I have and you are right, but when I said "I do seem to have GOT a free BIBLE'" I was attempting to be humorous since it looked, smelled and read like a real bible.
If you believe the Joseph Smith story you are VERY gullible. It is pure nonsense... plain and simple. There is no other way to say it (sorry!).
imaginenoreligion 2 years ago
Well I find it very sad that you view someone you do not know as ''gullible'' I also c u failed 2 answer y u asked 4 a Bible in teh first place. Oh, and tell me so u view EVERYONE that belives in God ''gullible'' also, or jus Mormon's. I eman cing as u have no belieif.
defectedsound 2 years ago
I do not need to know you to make the statement that you are gullible. It is enough to know that you believe that Joseph Smith was given magic stones by an invisible being which allowed him to look into a magic hat and have the book of mormon revealed to him, which (incidentally) is written in Jacobian English, which is weird because Joseph Smith was not born in that era, but it does make it sound more like a bible.
imaginenoreligion 2 years ago
''magic stones'' haha, do u actully really belive that defintion? What a joke! ''magic hat''? were did u get that statment from? oh and ''Jacobian English'' source 4 that also please?
defectedsound 2 years ago
Jacobean English (I spelled it incorrectly earlier) refers to prose written during the reign of King James 1.
Maybe you've heard of the King James Version of the bible, KJV?
Just reading the BOM should persuade you that it is written in the same linguistic style as the KJV. It's there for you to see for yourself. You don't need a source, read it for yourself. Maybe god speaks like that!?
imaginenoreligion 2 years ago
Oh and also, I am well aware what u said on 0.46, i was reffering to later on as u see above. You make it sound to people as if the BOM is ANOTHER bible, it is not it is ANOTHER teastament of Jesus Christ, Im not saying u r sayin it is a Bible, but it cud sound that way 2 sum that dnt know better.
defectedsound 2 years ago
Also u cannot MAKE anyone become a Mormon it jus does not work like that. if you feel they was forcing you then you got the wrong impression. Can I ask you, why if u have allready made up yr mind their is no God. (and SEEMS you allready have) Why ask for a Bible?
defectedsound 2 years ago
They were not forcing me into anything, but their clear intention was to convert me to the religion/cult, otherwise why would I have been visited on three separate occasions?
Admittedly I enjoyed arguing with them on all three occasions, but that is beside the point, I just like to argue!
imaginenoreligion 2 years ago
I like your open mindedness. Sorry, but you have no right in saying what you say is true, I am not sure what to believe in anymore, i am a mormon, and there's no way in prove what is truth and what is lie, you for example cant prove that God existence or disprove it, open your mind and think about it.
LyricalSh0t 2 years ago
You can't disprove many things, but you can say that their is no evidence to support them. There are infinitely many hypothetical concepts that have as much proof as god.
Just think about the beliefs of the mormon church. Do they really sound objectively rational?

defectedsound 2 years ago
What have I assumed?
You make the bold statement that you KNOW the church is true and decline to back it up when challenged to do so.

Truth has set me free.
The truth:
God, angels and demons are imaginary
We will never be reunited with dead relatives. Life is finite. When we die, that's it. There is no heaven or hell.
Prayer does nothing except comfort those praying.
There is no magic.
Bad things happen to good people for no particular reason.
There is no universal justice.
Religious thinking severely distorts reality.
We have ONE LIFE, ONE PLANET, ONE CHANCE to get it right.

So meanwhile, I think I'll live my life the way I feel good living it... by believing when I die, I will see my dead relatives.
jemdyar17 3 years ago
"how sad, depressing and lonely it must be. "
So instead I choose to face mortality.
imaginenoreligion 3 years ago

It does waaaaaaaaaaay more good than bad. what im trying to say is you shouldnt try to turn mormons into atheist, you should encourage the religion, doesnt mean you have to become mormon. peace out
gandhixtc 3 years ago
They are very nice people, and I used to hold a similar view to your own. The problem is that moderates 'enable' fundamentalists. They provide some level of tolerance for those who are often the least tolerant and mostmisguided.
Take the issue of stem cell research. It's progress is being delayed by the actions of religiously motivated objectors.
imaginenoreligion 3 years ago
I often tune in to a christian radio station. This station recommends forgetting about global warming since the earth is a 'disposable planet' and that Jesus is returning soon anyway - the whole planet will be destroyed by god in the rapture etc...
This is what bothers me about religion, magical thinking that clouds rational decision making.
imaginenoreligion 3 years ago
again my point was not religios beliefs and how they slow down stem cell research and talk about global warming. Its the standards of the church that would make someone into a better person. I visited a lds church once i have to admit it was kind of fun. only problem was it was 3 HOURS LONG!!!!!!!!!
gandhixtc 3 years ago
thanks for the explanation i get what your trying to say. But my point was there is a high D.U.I rate in the U.S. if people start becoming mormon they cant drink so that rate would go down, and if gang members would become lds than crime rate would go down, they cant smoke so maybe cancer and death wouldnt be so high, etc... thats kinda what i was trying to say
gandhixtc 3 years ago
I agree, religion does have many benefits for some people.
Astrology, numerology and past life regression also benefit some people. I met a numerologist at a psychic fair who claimed that numerology helped him beat his alcoholism.
My point is that, on balance, I think religion does more harm than good. It retards scientific progress and opens the door for all sorts of magical thinking.
Incidentally I have also attended mormon church twice. They all seemed very friendly.
imaginenoreligion 3 years ago
i still do not see how it does more harm than good. I see that you despise religion like christianity and any kind of religious belief in jesus or god, im real curious to hear or see your take on religion like scientology or buddhism both of which are beyond crazy
gandhixtc 3 years ago
It affects politics.
Why bother to rectify global warming if you believe that the rapture is coming?
With god on your side, anything can be justified.
Scientology, islam, wicca, judaism.... all nonsense.
imaginenoreligion 3 years ago
no i mean i dont see how religion does more harm to a PERSON than good. I know religion is bad in a way there is wars over it and all the kind of stuff but i think its good for someone like an alcoholic or a killer or a drug attic to find religion. i hear many stories of religion helping them. Ya it affects politics in a GOOD WAY, if an atheist ran for president he wouldnt stand no chance whatsoever. take mitt romney for example hes a mormon look how far he got, so relgioin helps politics
gandhixtc 3 years ago
You're joking right?
The fact that an atheist has no hope of election in America right now says a lot, but it doesn't really show that religion is good for politics. It just shows that having christian credentials is good for a candidate in 'bible-thumping' America.
I was arguing that religion is bad for society. I concede that it may be beneficial to some people, although the real benefits come from the suppport network that religion offers people.
This does not validate the beliefs.
imaginenoreligion 3 years ago
no i am not joking, thats what i meant religion helps a canadite have a better chance of winning an election than an atheist does and there is no way you can disagree with that, and if you do, give me a president that was atheist. and i also dont see how its bad for society. I remember a while ago you
gandhixtc 3 years ago
were talking about global warming and a christian radio station disregarding it. now lets say for example the christian station was actually correct, and the rapture did come. would you actually blame them for saying that? and if they were wrong how could it affect a whole society? you think all religions are gonna say "ok im not gonna save the world becauase jesus is coming" NO! that is just bs.
gandhixtc 3 years ago
lets get back to the mormon religion since thats what the video is about, you say religion doesnt help society. well isnt people society? we talked about mormons and no alocohal and killing and drugs. You did agree with me that they are good people, they also have this thing called the law of chasity which is no sex until marriage, dont you agree that thats a good thing to follow because itll prevent problems like rape, abortion, people at a young age having babies, young girls lives beingruined
gandhixtc 3 years ago
this whole conversation began with the mormon religion. I just hate wen people say mormons are crazy because there not, there good people and they set a good example.
gandhixtc 3 years ago 2
Fair point, but these standards derive from the community, not from the scriptures that they follow.
Just for the record... Mormons are nice friendly people. They just happen to believe some weird stuff.

ALL RELIGION is based on religious texts, but yours is one of the most easily debunked holy texts since it refers:
Native Americans being of Isreali descent.
Livestock that were only introduced by European settlers.
Metalurgy that is inconsistent with the archealogical record.
Huge wars between tribes whose remains have never been found.

Ok, Take this seriously. Most Mormons associate
Jesus with Quetzoquatal.[Q.], Q. established his
Sermon on the Mount type religion and missionary
traders to make a medicine journey, teaching,
trading, telling and learning stories, including Q's
So Q. fell off the wagon, had a minor orgy. Horrified
when he woke up hungover, he told the Temple
Preists he was going off to repent, and when he had
repented, he would return for his Millenial reign.
It is a real story about Quetzoquatel.

those two young men that you are talking about that are serving their god and jesus christ are amazing young men they are spending two years of their life that they would not even have if it were not for god so therefore to show their faith and to somewhat try to repay him (this is almost next to impossible for if it was not for him we would not be and we would have nothing) and the money thing he again gave us everything

"Making converts" is a mentality of theists.

I'm also Mormon btw but I don't roll with the three kingdoms of glory and 'outer darkness'.
rockahol7 4 years ago
I like this. Rather then bash a religion, you were fair enough to hear them out... and then bashed them. LOL I am not an atheist (I do believe in religion and God), but I am against religious structers with weird Dogmas of practices.

no offense but they all have weird dogmas and practices.

First off I want to say I'm Mormon. That aside, I thought that this was one of the more respectfull vidieos put on you tube in disagreement with my faith. It may sound strange, but I appreciate the way you have treated the subject. So many others use hate and Ad Homenim statements. You really explain yourself.
luckychucky505 4 years ago
Well, it's easy to ridicule religion. I manage to resist the urge sometimes. Other times...
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
I happen to agree you have a pretty laid back tone regarding religion, which is really quite good. With me i happen to get very upset very quickly about it.
I highly recommend using the Socratic method to persuade ppl out of their delusion. youtube "socratic method and Christianity" and you will see what I'm talking about.
I think you would be able to use it effectively.

I was referring to mormons, but have also been visited by jehovah's witnesses and received their bible and visited their "temple". They are a much more sour faced bunch of people than the mormon's, but they're all deluded.
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
Yeah I've given both the witnesses and the mormons a chance on numerous occasions. Sometimes I've invited them into my home, other times I've stopped on the street to talk to them, and every single time they've either lied or been unable to answer my questions.
BobTKaye 4 years ago
I've even agreed to read passages from their books in exchange for them answring my questions, but the mormons didn't hold up their end of the bargain, and the witnesses claim to have proof of their claims in the bible but somehow never manage to bring their bible with them, even when they have everything else and say that they will bring the copy with them next time.
BobTKaye 4 years ago
Ask them to give you a bible next time. They'll definitely bring you one, if you ask them nicely!
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
I did, twice, very nicely. That's what was so suspicious about it.
BobTKaye 4 years ago
That's weird. I got my book of mormon straight away, and had no trouble getting my Jehovah witness bible either.
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
Were the witnesses there with the bible so that you could discuss it with them or did they send it to you and leg it?
BobTKaye 4 years ago
They hand delivered it, and stayed for an hour and a half until they got bored. I have since visited the mormon church twice, and had extensive discussions with the missionaries, but it is like talking to a wall. They are very deeply rooted in the whole belief system and logical arguments just bounce right off them.
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
Hmmm. Maybe it was just the witnesses who visited me who avoid bringing their bibles, or perhaps they bring them when invited by someone who phones as they are more likely to be able to convert them. You are referring to jehovah's witnesses and not mormons right?
BobTKaye 4 years ago
if you flip to the back of the book you will see a picture of the twin engine speed boat that brought jesus to the americas, but even more interesting is the picture of jesus and moses at the horse races, when jesus said to moses "come forth" and moses came fifth and everybody lost their money! man, was jesus ever pissed at moses!

True. It's good to have time on your hands.I get to do stuff that interests me, but there is a reason it took 7 months to get around to going to their church. I often don't have time on my hands since I am teaching people to fly most weekends...

lol, good luck! do you think we should do Athiesm door to door? we shoud dress up smart, go to Salt Lake, knock on doors and say 'hello, have you heard the bad news?'
shepshepshep 4 years ago
Yes we should, but it's GOOD NEWS. There is no hell, we can live our lives without the fear of eternal damnation and noone is watching us 24/7. I would say that was good news, wouldn't you.
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
yes, but they always say 'hello have you heard the good news' or something else non commital.
shepshepshep 4 years ago
It seems that there has to be something behind all of this Mormon stuff if they are willing to do so much to teach it..Why not be open to possibilities that seem unreasonable???
shaycarl 4 years ago
I am open to many things, but as Christopher Hitchens states in his latest book (god is not Great) "exceptional claims demand exceptional evidence", and religion offers me nothing more than a holy book. Maybe you know something I don't. Feel free to share!
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
Christopher Hitchens comments are a double edged sword for you guys. I look at the enormity of the Universe and the perfect shape of every planet and the uniqueness of our own planet, and wonder....How could this have just "poof" come into being randomly. And as for evidence, any evidence that points towards evolution are only theories. Nobody really knows. I would say that their is just as much possibility evidence that God created everything as there it that he didn't.
keltontrey 4 years ago
Read the book "god is not Great". Then you will see that your comment is redundant. Postulating a creator answers nothing

If you don't believe God that's fine, I guess I just don't know what your real intention is speaking to missionaries.
keltontrey 4 years ago
Many people may well think I am on a spiritual search. They would be wrong. I am simply fascinated how grown adults can believe in magic stones, golden plates that vanish intoo the heavens, resurrection etc etc. Religion makes exceptional claims yet only offers a dusty old book as evidence.
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
I can understand where you are saying, we come from two different realms of thinking. But honestly if you did see the "Magic Stones" and the "Gold Plates" would that help you believe in something spiritual? Yes these are exceptional claims, but what about the universe? can you explain it? After studying it for some time Einstein and most of the great scientist in the passed 500yrs all believed in a supreme being who organized it. Are you asking for too much?
keltontrey 4 years ago
Actually Einstein was most probably a pantheist (look it up). In a quote from 1954 he says, "I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
You asked for a Bible and got a Book of Mormon? Hm, someone messed up. To make things clear, the Book of Mormon is not touted as part of the Bible, bust a supporter of it.

I haven't given up on the mormons... I've just been a bit busy with the Jehovah's witnesses recently, even went to their 'kingdom hall'. The mormons know my position and have still invited me to their church, which I will do eventually..
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
I think you're completely wasting your time trying to convert Mormons into Atheists. They are products of a mind conditioning program that would make Catholic Jesuits go green with envy.
BastardfromtheBush 4 years ago
I have to admit though of all the Religious people I've met; they are the most happy-go-lucky & charming people you'll get. No dour & fire and brimstone types here. I think that's why they get so many converts; people want to be like Donnie & Marie in spite of the fact their Founder was known con-artist and philanderer; their Mormon theology is laughably ridiculous and has no basis in fact archeologically or historically.
BastardfromtheBush 4 years ago
I forgot to mention that you should ask them their history of why they got chased out of New York, Ohio & Illinois and eventually settled in Utah. It was because they were tarred & feathered and burnt out wherever they went by King James Bible-bashers who could stand their 'heresy'.
They'll tell you all about that.
BastardfromtheBush 4 years ago
The video states he was promised a Bible, but given a Book of Mormon. As a former missionary I can say we had plenty of bibles to give away, and did give them away to those who requested.
lifeonaplate 4 years ago

Moroni was in on it with me, so you can blame him too.
prophetJoeSmith 4 years ago
inr, I plan to put together a piece on the Book of Mormon itself. I'll try and get it done quickly. But various other items of my life may momentarily eclipse the priority. So no promises, at present, on a time frame.
HiveRadical 4 years ago
Great, I look forward to it. I am trying to read it, but it really is hard going.

I'm currently in Alma. I've been reading about 2 weeks for about 20 min. a day. It's not a difficult book.

If you'd be at all interested.
HiveRadical 4 years ago
I would be delighted to engage in a discussion about all things mormon. I have yet to read the book of mormon and will try to reserve judgement until then, BUT I doubtful that I will have any great revelations
imaginenoreligion 4 years ago
If you haven't read the BOM you're on par with 95% of Mormons. Note that most Mormon doctrine really doesn't come from the BOM anyway so reading it won't help you much. Mormons have prophets that might put out scripture, and also some sorts of doctrine are known by a sort of "group culture osmosis" but might not even be specifically written down. Being Mormon is more a lifestyle than a religion.
MystryBox 4 years ago
That's not really true. A substantial portion of the membership took, and completed, our prophet's recent recomendation to start and finish reading the Book of Mormon from between mid-05 to the end of 05. Certainly the number isn't the ideal of 100%, but I'm nigh certain it's significantly greater than 5%.
HiveRadical 4 years ago
Interesting. Though I seriously doubt "substantial portion". Most members probably aren't even active. And either way my point stands that reading the BOM is nearly pointless--you can read it (somehow managing to stay awake) and still have no idea what Mormons are really about. Most key doctrine is not found in the BOM.
MystryBox 4 years ago
All the key doctrines are found in the Book of Mormon. Your inability to see them there isn't proof they aren't there, rather it's evidence that you don't understand what you are reading, though I doubt you've read much of the book.
HiveRadical 4 years ago
Perhaps you could show us all where the descriptions of the nature of heaven(s) and salvation are in the BOM? He'll hear about that from the Elders soon so he might as well read it in the BOM first, right? So where in the BOM can we read about the various Kingdoms and what's required to reach them? I don't mean a verse or two that might be stretched to support a lesson point, I mean the details of the doctrine itself. Hint: he should understand it just from reading the BOM if it's there.
