Looks like early 1980s to me. You know, I remember watching this but I had no idea at the time it was the Four Tops. Unfortunately, three of the four original members have passed away: Lawrence Payton in 1997, Obie Benson in 2005, and Levi Stubbs - the lead singer - in 2008. Only Abdul Fakir, standing to the left of the other three, is still alive.
I've been looking for this video for forever! Probably the most memorable song ever from Sesame Street for me. And I still sing it to myself when I'm waiting for the bus as an adult!
Black guys use to sing doo wop and harmonies on the street corner, not they just rap nonsense. Look how cool The Four Tops are, they way they took their coats on and twirled around stylin'. I like the little turn Lawrence Payton did at 0:15.
These young cats today can't sing a tune like Levi and The Tops. Wow, Levi's voice was so real, soulful, and passionate. No lip syncing, no technology making him sound better. He could sing how much is that doggie in the window or Old McDonald Had A Farm, and I would love it. These singers today have no soul.
I take the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) buses.
I've been on bus route numbers 32 Forest Hills via Hyde Park Avenue, 39 Forest Hills via Huntington Avenue, (Boston) 214/216 Hough's Neck via Germantown, Quincy), 215 Ashmont Station via West Quincy, (Quincy to Boston), 230 Montello Commuter Rail (Brockton) to Quincy Center.
At 0:19, it looks like "The Four Top" all the way to the left on the end is either tired or not interested in starring in this skit for this song because, he yawned like he was either tired or bored where at the same time Levi Stubbs hand signaled to him not to do that. However, after Levi Stubbs hand signaled to him, I wonder what that meant when he was pointing to the left and what he was pointing too.
levi doesn't have his trademark white and black beard/mustache so that's what throws me off on dating the timeline. he had it in 1985. levi looks the way he did in 1983 at motown 25.
My guess this skit was either in the year 1990 or 1991 because, I watched Sesame Street everyday and I remember seeing this skit either in the year 1990 or 1991. If I am wrong, then maybe it was in the 80s as you have mentioned where I must've missed watching a Sesame Street episode.
THIS is what I was looking for!! This is awesome, I knew i didn't imagine it. I love the Four Tops, not many groups like them anymore sadly. Good song.
I also remember this song. The first time I saw this skit was when I was 9 years old. Also, when I first saw this skit, I didn't know they were putting the coins in an invisible slot behind Big Bird, I thought they were just giving Big Bird a pat on the back to say hi.
Excellent!!!! I haven't seen this since 1986! Thank you for posting I thought no one would ever find this long lost classic. I'm from Detroit Michigan, Motown, and proud of our legendary Four Tops. This clip reminds me of the Detroit D-DOT bus stop service here in the City of Detroit. But Big Bird don't pick anybody up!

At 1:54 he said "Now sing it with me Tops," and they said "sure will."

At 1:54, what did Levi Stubbs say? It sounded like he said "I said it with me Tops" or "Sing it with me Tops" but, I'm not sure what he said.

Music when it was performed with CLASS! These gentlemen defined class, and their harmonies and style will almost certainly never be duplicated.
A real classic. Thanks for posting!

Sometime in the '80s I think. The Four Tops looked the way they did here during that decade.
