Why didn't you correct your mother on medicare? If she likes her doctor and treatment from medicare and enjoys it, but says she's afraid of socialized medicine, there's some obvious cognitive disconnect. The public option will operate similarly to Medicare, except it will allow everyone under 65 to buy into a medicare like system.
