  • why did I have such nice and laidback Asian parents?!! They should have forced a cello down my throat so I could try playing Julie-O someday =.=

  • Love the harmonic plucking at 2:08. Great transition.

  • I am playing this for solo and ensemble this year, my senior year. It is very difficult. The notes aren't too difficult but having to add all of the percussion sounds are very difficult and also keeping the rhythm since it is so free sounded. Amazing piece though, nothing else like it on the cello.

  • How can he do that????????

  • i met this guy... in my dreams... and woke up with a stained bed

  • Not playing cello myself. So - question to people who do: Is this just musically awesome or also hellishly difficult?

  • @xxxjensstarkxxx I'm a cellist. This song is notorious for its immense difficulty. I've been playing for 10 years now and I'm still not nearly close to being good enough to even attempt this. Granted, some cellists progress faster than others, and I focused more on vocals than cello throughout the years, but based off of what I've seen, even someone whom cello is their main instrument and they are very proficient are probably only barely would be ready to begin learning this piece around now.

  • @aseretkavon Thanks! That makes sense. I've seen a concert grade cellist trying and failing to play it on one of her CDs.

  • @xxxjensstarkxxx Its Both expecially becuase in school they train us classically and this is more jazz. It uses techniques that arnt usually used and theres alot of tempo, and meter changes that are not used alot such as 10/16 i think one of them is. But it is musically amazing.

  • @angelrock09 It reminds me a little of these demo tracks on cheap electronic organs. Somewhat like "Look. You can do all this with a cello."

    Yes, amazing piece :)

  • Trying to learn this song its awesome love the bit at 1:28 onwards its awesome and i can play half of it

  • there is no such thing as any other song than this

  • I love watching the expression of ease and pleasure on Summer's face when he plays. That alone makes this a performance worthy of many replays. :]

  • love it

  • thumbs up if ur 14 and learning this song! (but much slower:))

  • This makes my heart feel lighter.

  • SOoooooooo good. NOW this is some really really great music

  • That smile that creeps in at 1:13 is priceless; composer's pride.

  • Listening to a composer performing his or her own work is something special. It really shouldn't be any different from listening to a reglar pop/rock artist performing his or her song --- but it is, and I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's because this is as close as we'll ever get to hearing Mozart perform "Rondo alla Turca" or Vivaldi "The Four Seasons". Or maybe I'm just stunned by Summer's amazing performance.

  • i think it would sound good on a viola just thinking

  • @SuperJudah1 viola has same strings as a cello - im a cellist and I managed to play part of this on a viola the other day :)

  • where can i get music

  • He looks like he's having so much freaking fun. :D

  • OMG this song makes me want to learn cello just so i can play it!

  • I freaking hate this song!!! One of the guys in my high school orchestra plays it all the time like a broken record... (actually im just jealous)

  • thumbs up if you're a cello player and already play the song. (and, of course, love it too)

  • Absurdo!!

    Totally amazing.

  • @ celloplayer16250 do you go to lee

  • he just looks so happy, it makes me happy to listen.

  • Mann I wish I could learn how to play like that.. so awesome

  • @CelloXGirl ... It is in Solos for Young Cellists vol. 5, published by Alfred.

  • am learning cello just to play this song

  • @GuyDevlin .. no discount rates :P

  • now i want to learn cello so bad!!!!!

  • MAESTRO!!!!! :D

  • who in the world can hate this,,,,

  • does anyone know where I can find sheet music?

  • soooooo freakin awesome but you gotta check out kevin olusola's version of it too :)

  • @fyssoccer59 dude I heard you on that one! that's how I came across this awesome song and I have not seen a better performance than olusola's!

  • @fyssoccer59 yeah i think his has much more passion in it, strange to think someone could interpret someone else's composition with more passion but I think he did.

  • yo my name is Julie and last name starts with O..... AND I love the song! What a great find!

  • I have the original to this and Ive been playing it. I'll be performing it at my high school orchestra's spring concert for my senior solo. There are alot of articulations and rhythms that aren't written for direct interpretation. It's composed so you can put your own twist into it.

  • This's beautiful! Makes me feel like walking in California sunlight!

  • this is killing me. i know i've heard this somewhere before. anybody know anything mainstream this might be in?

  • awesome!

  • Sounds like he's ripped off Mr Big's "Be with you" to me!

  • @Chroniciwa --wow,when i heard this a few days ago, the notes totally reminded me of "Be W You" as well.

  • I'm not even a cellist but the beautiful sounds he can create from such a traditionally classical instrument is so wonderful!

  • For anyone who likes this style of acoustic playing check out Don Ross.

  • for some reason this song reminds me of summer and autumn

  • This is the only song that can make me cry.

  • @888phoenix888 are you ignorant?

  • @KillaFudge7393 yes i am an ignorant willy head

  • This song always reminds me of everyone I love.

  • He looks so happy when he's playing it, it's amazing!

  • My cello teacher said I could start playing this, this summer :)

  • wow amazing

  • :D He performed for my school today along with the rest of Turtle Island it was the best Master Class I've had :D

  • @lespaul368

You might have an arranged version of it.

As far as I know There is a "Original" sheet music that you can get which is exactly or very close to what he plays here.

  • i was lucky enough to have had my school visited by a cellist who played this for us very well. I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • Nobody can play this piece like this guy :O

  • Oh, cool!! I'll have to get a pickup then. I'm trying to match his tone, but it's pretty hard in some spots... plucking with the nail side of my finger (strumming, really) doesn't really produce the same effects.

  • wtf.... how

  • thumbs up if ur a cello player and freakin wanna learn this song!!

  • @Sporemon99 it seems a little impossible though

  • @Sporemon99 argh where is the sheet music anyways?????

  • @hi743roblox

there's a site called argencello (if you can get over the fact its in argentinian) scroll down and you will find an online copy. I've been trying to get it everywhere. My local sheet music store say they can't find it and i can't find it on mazon! If anyone knows where i can get a copy let me know - I feel im cheating this great musician out of his money by using these parts!

  • @nessierose2 haha thanks anyways. is it extremely hard to play this piece?

  • @hi743roblox er i wouldnt say its that hard, its just the tone thats sometimes difficult to master. If you're grade 8 (UK) ish yoyu shouldnt realay have a problem :)

  • @Sporemon99 cellist?

  • @joneboy07

ohhh yea ;D started last year for school, now im in the highest ranking orch x) 7th grade btw obviously i cant play this lawl

  • @Sporemon99

Thumbs up if this piece makes you want to become a cello player just so you can learn it.

  • @warprod I can't give you the link because I'm on iPhone right now, but there is an excellent recording on YouTube by violinmasterclass. The piece is slightly slower than usual and there are a few mistakes around the two minute point, but the quality is by far the best of anywhere on YouTube.

  • TheJMacaroni, I'm with you. I'm trying to get a sound like Summer's, and I'm not quite sure what he's doing at 1:44. Does anybody know?

  • @kaeli8 He's using the nail side of his fingers, which gives it the slightly more coarse, metallic sound. He is also pressing ridiculously hard with his left hadn to make sure the strings ring as much as possible. Hope this helps.

  • @kaeli8 He came to our school and told us. #1, hes using an amplifier, which gives the sound a bit more tangibility, and #2, he is plucking so that the string hits the fingerboard after he plucks. he also plucks with both hands sometimes, which gives him much more versatility.

  • is there no decent recording of this anywhere? Please let me know if you find something decent.

  • i transposed some of it for violin, but its so much more powerful on the cello! beautiful piece!

  • My all time favorite. Pure beauty. Heard it live in 1998 at the Rheingau Musikfestival.

  • breathtaking! he masters the cello like its part of his body; a true genius!

  • I love Julie-O. I've performed it a few times myself and this is a lovely performance. I don't get why nobody has posted a recording of his other solo that he arranged: Lo, How Rose E'er Blooming.

  • I LOVE IT!!!!!!

  • I would die if I could get lessons from Mark Summer to play this song!

  • @pjonzzzz i take lessons from him

  • why does his C string sound soo....loud? like in the beginning he is barely plucking the string and it echos sooo loud!

  • I'm not quite understanding what happens at 1:44...

  • insisto,¡ tocas super ¡ "felicidades a demas de ser muy guapo ""con todo mi resperto"

  • played with such great emotion

  • Thats my Deans brother

  • Love listening and watching this man create music.

  • This piece is just so cool and interesting especially the way he plays it!

  • I keep hearing Toy Story in one bar:P

  • @taumauz same here :O

  • that way of plucking must hurt ur fingers

  • maybe initially, but by now, I'm sure he has good enough callouses to make up for it :-)

  • Not if you have callouses.

  • i luv it,so piece when hear,thank 4 share

  • Just heard him play up by Sebastopol and had no idea he had actually composed this. It was awesome though!

  • wow...

  • I had the opportunity to hear his quartet play in Livermore; he is amazing, he does all sorts of percussion-type things by tapping the fingerboard in different places.

  • I love his face...

  • this is amazing, imagine someone sitting there composing something like this, this is magical :)

  • go im form nightingale and with mr summer

  • one word: SICK.......period.

  • I wouldn't say finest cellist around, I would just prefer great at what he does.

  • at :50 and 1:11 are amazing parts.

  • I love how this particular piece transitioned some of the style of Andy McKee's Drifting to cello. Absolutely fantastic.

  • I don't think there's a limit to how good u can be

  • you can see how he gets into it with his facial expressions.

    its absolutely amazing.

im about to start learning cello and mark summer is simply outstanding, he makes me want to learn to play even more than i already do.

the cello has such a beautiful sound and he really shows some of the different styles.

  • Lol just looking at the sheet music of this make chills on me XD so hard

  • do you have the sheet music cause i cant find it

  • I think i have it in my PC but dunno if still there cuz it crushed down

  • go to a music store.

  • you need to get "solos for young cellists" volume 8 (a green book with a cello on the front (surprise surprise) it has an arrangement of this piece in it which i am learning. its pretty awesome

  • sharmusic

  • Shar Music I believe.

  • This song is making me want to learn the cello.

Unfortunately I dont have the commitment so I'll stick with transposing this for violin.

  • I love this. It's absolutely amazing.

  • i play cello and this is so beautiful i wish i could find this arrangement i wuld luv to play this.. he is very talented!!! n_n !go cello and mark summer!...

  • Shar music publishes it.

  • i know i play the cello to and this is my favorite

  • check his site

  • I hope I can find a violin arrangement of this somewhere - it's a beautiful song.

  • probably pretty hard to to that on a violin.... ^_^;

I see it as kind of a "cello only" piece.

  • i play the violin but i love the cello too =)

  • very nice indeed :)

  • i have been playing cello since kindergarden, it is my joy, my pride, and what i do every day for two hours.....i learned this solo and this certainly brought me closer to the cello, for those of you out there that love music as much as i do, keep the music going!!!

  • what?

  • ah this gives me chills. <333

  • This is just amazingly beautiful!!!

  • @68yasmin The group came to my school and played for all the kids. It was really awesome, and he played this piece for us, and he said he named it after his sister, who he always fought with. He was my bass teachers room mate in college, that's how I got to see him. The dude is awesome.

  • yeah i was wondering if i could get taht one song influenced by zepplin anyone know what im talking about? it was really good and i want it

  • these guys came to my school today they where amazing

  • I wish they would come to our school!

  • OH MY GOSH.

    OHHHH MY GOSH.

    ;)

  • This sounds very Australian, and I'm not sure I could tell you why....

  • Are you from Australia? :P

  • No, so I guess perhaps I am not the best judge.

  • Haha neither am I. Just messin' witchoo :D

  • it does, i thought so too when i first heard it.

  • I looooove his tone, i wonder what kind of C string he is using because it sounds awesome

  • he uses spiricore tungsten

  • where can i find the sheet music for this? :)

i would love to play this for my recital!

    it sounds absolutely amazing!!!:D

  • idk if you can find the sheet music online, but there is music for it in "solos for Young Cellists" Volume 5- Carey Cheney

  • "Contemporary Originals for Solo Cello

    Julie-O

Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming

    by Mark Summer"

is also a different version from Carey Cheney's.

If you (or anyone else who reads this) wants to play Julie-O, I would recommend getting both versions. Take bits and pieces that you like from each version, play it how you want. Have fun with it!!! :D

  • BESTES VERSION! naturally

  • Best cello solo ever.

  • Bah. This is more than just a "cello solo." -.-

  • This piece is in my top 3 favorite pieces/songs. I play viola and transcribed it so I could play it.

  • Do you have the sheet music for the viola part?!?! I would love...LOVE to play it!

  • I do...it's handwritten and from what I remember the first page is in bad condition and needs to be redone. I'll try to find it sometime in the next week or so and I can send to you.

  • Wow he's great! I was setn this vid by a friend who played this earlier in Orchestra today

    lol

  • dude! I know this guy, he coached at my summer camp two years ago. We actually played an original piece composed by their first violinist, a quartet, and it had this crazy cello solo that he coached me on. good times

  • im learning to play this song right now =)

i wish id found this recording right away though the style i play it in is very diffrent lol im thinking about posting myself playing it to get comments on wether or not i should change my style

  • I'm learning to play this and sure it gives a lot of freedom to the player, but it's still not the easiest thing to play right off the bat. It's awsome though.

  • Your right... its really hard when u first start took me almost a week to be able to play it well enough that i could start working on my technique more

  • I've had it for what seems like forever and I'm still trying to get everything straightened out. It sounds terrible.

  • @Gaarageeksrule where did you get the music ? Would love a copy :)

  • All of you jackoffs claiming that just anyone can play like this should post an example- if you were right, I'd thank you for it. The thing is, you can't.

  • Have been looking to buy the sheet music for this. Does anyone know where I can get it from? Thanks. P

  • It's in a book called Solos for Young Cellists volume 5.

  • actually that's a doctored version made easier for less experienced cellists. The version straight from Mark Summer is in a book from Turtle Island String Quartet along with his version of Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming.

  • what are you talking about???? THIS IS MARK SUMMER!!! Any great artist will never play their pieces the exact way the write them, he improvises a lot throughout it, and adds notes to make it sound how he feels.

  • dude, i wasn't talking about the video. I was talking about the arrangement of this piece found in Solos for Young Cellists volume 5... which is an arrangement by someone, not the Mark Summer original, found at shar music (see above)

  • ahh sorry about the confusion.

  • mark summer is the dude man he rocks at cello he should try electric hed so bring cello's reputation above electric guitars lol XD ~cello pride

  • i have a yamaha electric cello =) i didnt even know there was such a thing as electric cello until i got one for my birthday lol its awsome!!!!!!

i really need to try this on my electric, =( ive beenworking on playing this for 2 weeks now for solo ensemble and i never considered trieng it on my electric

  • 6th time watching it today; hasn't gotten old one bit.

  • his C string has huge balls

  • indeed it does...seems to be a common comment here about marks C string....it's quite amazing. I'd reckon it's cause he paid huge money for that cello......
