It is a PVC pipe that is suprisingly low fiction at the start and then It is normaly lubricated with oil (wich also makes nice looking white smoke). I can justify having such a long barrel because the combustion chamber is so large compared to the diamiter of barrel. There may be more friction but more energy is going into the spud and it is being accelerated for longer. If you only put the spud half way down the barrel it doesnt go nearly as far.
Theres nothing but feilds out the back of my house. its pretty safe to fire things into them. havnt hit anyone so far. I only fired the spear (metal broom handle) into the wood or a target.
you should cut down your barrel for less friction and longer range.
nice large combustion chamber does the job tho!
