I just got done with R.P.T. week at Maine Marritime Academy and the M.T.O.s played this video to us to remind us of the Legacy we have to live up to. I'm really looking forward to the next 4 years so I can work for the Merchant Marines. I major in Marine Transportation Operations and will be in the deck operations and know many others here who will be in Engineering. If anyone in Bravo Company is watching right now, this is M.U.G. McAfee, O-RAH BRAVO.
My Father was a Merchant Marine in WWI - mostly North Atlantic. They were finally recognized as veterans in the late 1980s I believe under President George Bush
One thing they had to put up with was Russian indifference, they risked their lives to get to Arkangel and the moment they got there the Russians just barged in and took the stuff totally indifferent to their allies hardships. Understood the war in the East was terrible but consideration would have been preferred.
Thank you for a great clip from a retired merchant mariner. 3 years navy and 23 merchant marine. Too hell with the medals and uniforms. Let's get the job done!
completly agree its sad that they arent reconized as true vetrans by the government people dont understand and appreciate just what these men went through. Transporting supplies to europe and asia in unarmed vessels being targeted constantly by planes/ships
My father is 86 and was also a Merchant Seaman. Few understand the bravery these men undertook. Throughout history all war strategy is geared toward destroying the opponents supply line.
I'm very dissappointed that congress has never recognized their sacrifices which were as equal or greater than any other level of service. Today these brave men still aren't recognized with equal benefits. In encourage others to write their congress reps and request some action regarding a bill for them.
Merchant Marine has no s at the end, anyone wondering. It's not like the marines; marine refers to maritime. When you call us something, just say it correctly please :)
@deckie1985 can't help my accent. It's the one I was raised with. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. It was written for the Allied Merchant Navy/Merchant Marine fleet that sacrificed so much in WWII. You're certainly entitled to your opinion though.
My Grandfather was a Canadian Merchant Marine. He worked for Imperial Oil, and he shipped Oil to Britian. He served on two Ships (One was hit by the Wolf Packs)
Nicely done. My wife's dad was in the MM in the war. One of my cousins died when his merchant oiler was sunk en route from Boston to a convoy collection point off Newfoundland. The Murmansk Run is legendary - I suggest the youtube video PQ17 - Ivo Duvall.
2/21/42 My Grandfather went down with his ship the WD Anderson off the coast of Jupiter, Florida. It took almost 50 years for my grandmother to get a vet pension. That was as big a disgrace as the intenrment of the Japanese Americans but our government never apologized for that!
Awesome! Where can I get the sheet music? I'll figure it out easy enough but if its available that would be cool. Thanks Nathan from the Shipkeeper of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, WWII Liberty Ship.
Thanks for all the comments. It was a pleasure writing this tune and I'm so happy that it has been well recieved by Merchant Navy/Merchant Marine vets from all of the allied nations.
Haha, I guess that's a fair comment. I can see how it looks. The vid was posted by the guy who edited the video with me. In any case, The song was written by Nathan MacDonald from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. (The blond guy singing in the video). If you don't want to believe I'm that guy, that's fine. Its only a Youtube account. Its kind of funny actually. In any case, I'm just glad that the song is being well received.
It was the US that saved everybody. The British and Canadians were sailing US ships, using US guns and carrying US weapons, ammo and tanks for their armies. Get it right. What did the French do? Surrender. Oh, wait then they fought the allied navies. And they collaborated with the Nazies. Vichy France, something to be proud of. The US saved Europe and that's all there is too. Entiendes guey?
The US Merchant Marine had the highest casualty rate of any branch (that includes the Marine Corps). 16 year old boys and 80 year old grandfathers sailed together. The ships and men braved untold dangers and kept the troops, arms, tanks, guns, bullets, and everything else that kept up the war effort. After the war the brave men of the USMM got screwed and you can think the US airfarce for that one.
I meant to say "The ships and men braved untold dangers and kept the troops, arms, tanks, guns, bullets, and everything else that moving across the oceans and seas to keep up the war effort."
None braver have ever sallied forth in defense of all that is right and none have received less thanks for thier deeds of bravery and their honor shall live till the end, may they now sail in peace and with a fair wind might all the angels of heaven salute their record as yet unblemished.
about 2 years ago these guys performed at the woodroffe high school remembrance day cerimony, I had the honour of producing their sound while they were there. Amazing band and one of the most breath taking tributes the the brave men and women who served to protect the prescious virtue of freedom
The way the American people and government treated Mariners, the NMU and other unions should have gone on strike during the war. Refuse to move the goods and see just how bad these "draft dodgers" were needed!!
They are the Ottawa-based "CELTAE"; this is one of the only a-capella songs they do. Most of their stuff is accompanied by traditional celtic instruments. (And a very good friend of mine is their bass player, so that's how I know!)
I bought a CD when I was in NFLD, and you guys are frickin' awesome. I love this song, and it is now one of my favorites ever. This is the way Celtic music should be done.
Who's the dumbass who disliked this video?

Hate the theme and the accents.... Anchors Aweigh, despite being the Navy hymn, reminds me more of my years at sea than this nonsense.
