Well I am formally inviting you to take a listen to my channel, Using your open mind take the time to hear my tunes.. your subscribtion to my channel will help me show the world my music. Much Love.
I always love seeing Brett and Jack together - fantastic game players, always. He was on Match Game before she was (he was in the pilot!), and actually suggested to the producers that they bring her on and give her a shot on the panel. The rest is history, and Brett became an integral part of MG's success.
Jack Klugman is a really nice guy. In the summer of '72, Klugman and Tony Randall toured the country doing THE ODD COUPLE. I was in high school in Toledo and contacted him about doing an intv for the school paper. He invited me over, and gave me a great interview. Most stars would've just ignored me, but he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. And, what a talent! He was excellent in other shows as well like the Twilight Zone. Thanks, Jack!
To cr78fan...Sets from TV shows and movies often are recycled or altered in some form, if possible. On other occasions, an entire set may be scrapped if it's not feasible to reuse any part of it. The labor and material used is often quite costly, and even the most profitable of production companies will keep the bottom line in mind, and will rework or even sell off what they need to.
We have here the first Goodson-Toddman game show to tape permanatly in California. Doesn't change the game but we just have the big adjustment which really does work when you think about it; the betting word. Allen is back in his element where we love him and a husband and wife celebrity combo looks great and gives a great flavor to the week. Brett is a low key quick witted Match Game player who does okay here. Jack has great experience playing w/ Randel so he's great.
It might have, it might have not. This revival aired from 71-75. By 1973, the format changed in the bonus game so that each word was worth $100, so this must have been before that, so no.
Somebody, anybody, tell me! Set the record straight!
I've heard two sources about this video clip. Wikipedia said that this clip is from 1971 (ABC, Week 36: December 6-10, 1971). But the ABC Password page says that it's from 1973 (ABC, Week 133: October 22-26, 1973).
There might be a thing to the point about this being December 1971. For one thing, at that time "Password" taped at the Prospect & Talmadge studios, which used Norelco PC-60/70 cameras; by 1973 the show was at the Vine Street studios (don't know if they were still using GE PE-250's there, or if they had such cameras replaced).
This is what replaced Dark Shadows after ABC pulled the plug on the show. I heard that there were people protesting on the show. I don't know if there is any truth to that, but I read that people weren't happy about it.
Ah, If this was a B-E produc. you could say that in the 1950's, but this was 1973! They had LAWS about giving away answers, and MG-BT never participated in that nasty sport!
I see a GSN bug on this clip. My understanding is that this particular run of Password is pretty much lost, so how did they come up with this episode of the 'missing' version of Password?
there was a show called "before they were stars". they had a segment of people on game shows before they became famous. One of the people that was on one of those segments went on to become Naomi Judd. this was an abc show, so either freemantle has more eps than they are letting on or ABC does
Wow, I've seen all the Passwords except for this one. I heard that virtually every episode has been erased for some reason, I guess b/c preserving the tapes would have been too costly. No wonder I've never seen this incarnation of the show.
Even this tape appears to be from one of the ABC affiliates (KABC, perhaps?), as the "lo-fi" 50 Hz-5 kHz frequency-response audio which betrays a transmission through AT&T phone lines (as common on network TV programming as transmitted across most of the country pre-1978) is in evidence here.
Out of the 1,099 ABC/Password episodes, 8 are in the UCLA TV & Film Archives, 3 are on the trading circuit, and The Museum of TV & Radio might have a handful as well. A second studio master, from 1972 and with Sheila MacRae and Martin Milner, is also known to have survived. The rest were reused for Family Feud & The Better Sex (that show got erased also).
The theme song on this version of Password is supposedly called "The Fun Of It"
I think Family Feud was "the" game show for ABC at that time. That's probably the reason why ABC won't erase them.
A wishful thought would be that someone or somebody take the reused Video tapes & disect the tapes to try to get the original programs that were recorded over. Could this happen? It might or might not.
Well, no - because all of the FF eps have been transferred to digital media. But one wonders if the tapes even EXIST any more. I, too, wish there were a way to recover the ABC Password/Password All-Stars run. And yes, P A-S is considered to be a bad incarnation, but the version of Password (with civilians) that became, I always thought was one of the BEST! Besides, it had the BEST Password theme EVER!
I just found out that these shows aired the week of October 22-26 of'73. Since this was a Tuesday show, I assume that this originially aired on Octoher 23, 1973. Unfortunately, I was in school at the time.
At least this portioned was saved. I heard that ABC erased over the tapes of this version and that we'd never see the Password from the 70's again. But I still prefer the Password from the 60's.
Why would they erase history? ABC took the "Password" tapes & recorded over for other Goodson-Todman game shows like "The Better Sex" (which all but 4 episodes were erased) and "Family Feud". ABC also erased "Split Second" (2 episodes do exist)
NBC did the same thing with "Knockout" (entirely erased but 1 episode is on the trading circuit), "Concentration" (rumored that the 1958 to 1973 are destroyed) and the Match Game (only 11 episodes exist from 1962 to 1969). Sad indeed.
NBC Are liars! Someone found out they NBC has over 150 episodes of the original "Concentration" in a storage warehouse. And for some reason there keeping this a secret! Why keep it a secret?!
they erased every episode EXCEPT for the color episodes. Only 3 episodes in black and white exsist. BTW on Concentration, not only 150 episodes exsist, ALL the episodes exsist!!!!!
Secondchance1977, I just stumbled upon the Game Show Convention Center website, and you are right about Concentration! NBC does have all of the episodes. I can't believe it! They need to release it.
As for ABC's Password, The Goodson-Todman catalog still lists the 1971-75 episodes, but it's been rumored that they were erased. Or were they not?
You know what? I was first suprised about Concentraition. Someone needs to edit wikipedia! On Password, i heard through the grapevine on some forums that ABC made 2 copies of each, one in color, one in black and white, and that about 170 black and white episodes exsist, gathering dust in a warehouse.
Im telling you, if there was an award for lying, NBC would win it. Im not sure about jeopardy on 64-75, but 78-79 exsists in entirety. There are kines of jeopardy in black and white and a few tapes, but i think it may be a gonnar, unless someone checks the warehouses!
I gotta agree. NBC was about the stupidest network when it came to saving things. Can you believe they wiped the first two Super Bowls? Or did they? I wonder if those might exist somewhere. But then we are talking about the network that cut away from that famous NY Jets game to air "Heidi"...and we all know how that turned out. If Concentraion does exist GSN wouldn't air it anyway as they are busy with their original garbage most of the time.
The pilot exists it was the only episode recorded in b&w the rest even the ones from 1960s were rec in color that's why they were erased. Color video tape was expensive in the 1960s.
one of my friends, who works for NBC, "snoops" in old warehouses and finds these videos. yikes, i think that is illegal!!
she evan spoke to one of the nbc guys to play it and he told him to peep down about or be fired. I hope this wont jeopardize her job. But yes, NBC has many "earased" game shows in entirety! F*CK U NBC FOR NOT SHOWING THEM!!!!!!!!
Wow!!!! That is shocking. I'll second that too about NBC. Thank you for sharing the info and your friend risking her neck on finding out about these game shows.
Of course she will be annonymous!! I am SO sick on NBC hiding these tapes. I wonder why they wont show them. Maybe there trying to do a time capsul thing, or maybe not to be pressured into selling things. God, the media will harp on their backs if they find out about this. You know that show Mindreaders? Guess what? Supposedly "erased", but exsists! Oh, the things NBC will do
W Ehnnnnnn...BC!!! Why use the former WNBC-AM call signs, because NBC, both the television networks and the former radio division, were jerks for lying about destroying videotapes and for firing Howard Stern. At least CBS has the honesty of tell us that they destroyed tapes, although they goofed when all episodes of TJW was found in the WCBS-TV vaults, and now enjoying its run on GSN.
"On superbowls, the first one is iffy. The Second exsists in ENTIRETY!"
CBS & NBC broadcasted the first Super Bowl. CBS broadcasted Super Bowl II.
Now back in 1991, HBO broadcasted a two-part documentary call "PLAY BY PLAY - A History Of Sports Television." The 2 telecast plays that were shown was Max McGee's opening touchdown and Jim Taylor's touchdown run.
If CBS's broadcast of Super Bowl II fully exist, I wonder why it's not being released to the NFL Network.
"On superbowls, the first one is iffy. The Second exsists in ENTIRETY!"
I seem to recall hearing more than once that no complete copy of Super Bowl One exists anywhere (that anyone is aware of), which, if you think of it, is somewhat ironic, since it was originally broadcast by TWO networks!
If true, that makes me SICK just thinking about it (not to mention all of the other tv shows/specials/sporting events that have been lost forever because somebody decided to be CHEAP!!!)
you know what stratman? i tried discreeting my tape to get the original recording, and to my surprise, it WORKED! though the quality on both was a bit less than broadcastible. But maybe with some tweaking, we could get the episodes of some "erased" game shows and see the originals, if the process is tweaked :O
Those were aired on CBS and CBS was far less prone to erasing and reusing the tapes unlike ABC back in that era. Its sad; I'd have loved to see this rendition of Password air on GSN...
When did Allen Ludden start using "Hi Doll" as his opening greeting to the audience (and referring to his mother in law)? I'm surprised to see Ludden say, "happy Tuesday" here.
I'd say 1963, the year he married Miss Betty. Incidentally, Allen and Betty had first me the previous year. They were working together on stage in "Critic's Choice".
Sounds about right -- I can't seem to find Betty's biography about her life in TV, it's around here, though. It's called "Here We Go Again: My Life in Television". If you're a fan of hers -- or Allen's -- it's worth getting for the stories. :)
Great to hear that electronic music theme again! It, along with the early 70s "To Tell the Truth" and the original 60's Jeopardy! theme are my vote for the canon of most memorable game show tunes.
If you look very closely on the left side of the set, after Brett Somers comes out, you might of thought that it was Allen coming out of the left side, but it's actually an ABC cameramen over there.
Thanks for posting this. This is the version of Password I grew up watching in the 70s - along with shows like Match Game, Tattletales, Price is Right and Gambit. Most of those shows have survived in some fashion and have made their way onto GSN - but this is the first and only version of the ABC Password I have seen. Hopefully more will turn up - but thanks for posting this!
Oh, good -- glad I'm not alone on that. I liked the 75 theme best, too. After that it's a toss-up between this one and the theme from "Password Plus".

Two Questions:
1. I bought the Game Show Theme Music CD a few yrs ago and this PW theme is on it, but sounds somewhat different (no rhythm on mine.) Why?
2. Does anybody own the rights to sets or are they destroyed after a show's cancellation.

Stratman78 3 years ago
You know what? I was first suprised about Concentraition. Someone needs to edit wikipedia! On Password, i heard through the grapevine on some forums that ABC made 2 copies of each, one in color, one in black and white, and that about 170 black and white episodes exsist, gathering dust in a warehouse.
secondchance1977 3 years ago
".....170 black and white episodes exsist, gathering dust in a warehouse"
If they're found, they should colorize them!
How about the original Jeopardy! (1964-1975, 1978-79)? Is it true that those tapes do not survive or is NBC lying again?
Stratman78 3 years ago
Im telling you, if there was an award for lying, NBC would win it. Im not sure about jeopardy on 64-75, but 78-79 exsists in entirety. There are kines of jeopardy in black and white and a few tapes, but i think it may be a gonnar, unless someone checks the warehouses!
secondchance1977 3 years ago
I gotta agree. NBC was about the stupidest network when it came to saving things. Can you believe they wiped the first two Super Bowls? Or did they? I wonder if those might exist somewhere. But then we are talking about the network that cut away from that famous NY Jets game to air "Heidi"...and we all know how that turned out. If Concentraion does exist GSN wouldn't air it anyway as they are busy with their original garbage most of the time.
storrs19 3 years ago
Good thing for NFL. They filmed the bowls as well, and they PARTIALLY exsist. On superbowls, the first one is iffy. The Second exsists in ENTIRETY!
secondchance1977 3 years ago
The pilot exists it was the only episode recorded in b&w the rest even the ones from 1960s were rec in color that's why they were erased. Color video tape was expensive in the 1960s.
GarfieldnPyramid 2 years ago
NBC is lying AGAIN! Tapes exsist of the 78-79 version. On 64-75, kinescopes and tapes exsist
secondchance1977 3 years ago
What in the hell is NBC doing? Why are they lying to us? I'm afraid to ask on where you're finding these gems!
Stratman78 3 years ago
one of my friends, who works for NBC, "snoops" in old warehouses and finds these videos. yikes, i think that is illegal!!
she evan spoke to one of the nbc guys to play it and he told him to peep down about or be fired. I hope this wont jeopardize her job. But yes, NBC has many "earased" game shows in entirety! F*CK U NBC FOR NOT SHOWING THEM!!!!!!!!
secondchance1977 3 years ago
Wow!!!! That is shocking. I'll second that too about NBC. Thank you for sharing the info and your friend risking her neck on finding out about these game shows.
You friend will have to remain annonymous.
Stratman78 3 years ago
Of course she will be annonymous!! I am SO sick on NBC hiding these tapes. I wonder why they wont show them. Maybe there trying to do a time capsul thing, or maybe not to be pressured into selling things. God, the media will harp on their backs if they find out about this. You know that show Mindreaders? Guess what? Supposedly "erased", but exsists! Oh, the things NBC will do
secondchance1977 3 years ago
If NBC is hiding these shows, I presume that ABC & CBS must be doing the same.
Stratman78 3 years ago
ABC to a lesser extent; CBS tells the truth
secondchance1977 3 years ago
W Ehnnnnnn...BC!!! Why use the former WNBC-AM call signs, because NBC, both the television networks and the former radio division, were jerks for lying about destroying videotapes and for firing Howard Stern. At least CBS has the honesty of tell us that they destroyed tapes, although they goofed when all episodes of TJW was found in the WCBS-TV vaults, and now enjoying its run on GSN.
rwboa22 3 years ago
yes, cbs usually tells the truth; though more tapes on their shows exsist then abc or nbc.
ABC is in the middle. NBC wins the cake for lying.
secondchance1977 3 years ago
"On superbowls, the first one is iffy. The Second exsists in ENTIRETY!"
CBS & NBC broadcasted the first Super Bowl. CBS broadcasted Super Bowl II.
Now back in 1991, HBO broadcasted a two-part documentary call "PLAY BY PLAY - A History Of Sports Television." The 2 telecast plays that were shown was Max McGee's opening touchdown and Jim Taylor's touchdown run.
If CBS's broadcast of Super Bowl II fully exist, I wonder why it's not being released to the NFL Network.
Stratman78 3 years ago
Dont ask me! Im not CBS. CBS is kinda dumb in some aspects; they left there Superbowl 2 in an NBC gameshow warehouse!
secondchance1977 3 years ago
@Stratman78
If true, that makes me SICK just thinking about it (not to mention all of the other tv shows/specials/sporting events that have been lost forever because somebody decided to be CHEAP!!!)
msdemos 3 months ago
you know what stratman? i tried discreeting my tape to get the original recording, and to my surprise, it WORKED! though the quality on both was a bit less than broadcastible. But maybe with some tweaking, we could get the episodes of some "erased" game shows and see the originals, if the process is tweaked :O

How is it, then, that GSN seemed to have quite a few B&W Passwords if they were all destroyed?
recordman64 3 years ago
BEcause, as i said earlier, i heard that someone made B&W Copys of the episodes!
secondchance1977 3 years ago
OK...I should have read your comments a little more carefully. Sorry!
recordman64 3 years ago
the black and white ones gsn has are the nighttime version and somehow, not as many of those were lost
kes1963 3 years ago
Very interesting!
recordman64 3 years ago
Those were aired on CBS and CBS was far less prone to erasing and reusing the tapes unlike ABC back in that era. Its sad; I'd have loved to see this rendition of Password air on GSN...
behemoth8504 3 years ago
So NBC erased CBSs password??
GarfieldnPyramid 2 years ago
No.

When did Allen Ludden start using "Hi Doll" as his opening greeting to the audience (and referring to his mother in law)? I'm surprised to see Ludden say, "happy Tuesday" here.
hwyfan 4 years ago
I'd say 1963, the year he married Miss Betty. Incidentally, Allen and Betty had first me the previous year. They were working together on stage in "Critic's Choice".
baldy2006 4 years ago
If i understand right, betty and allen started dating sometime in 62, his first wife died in oct. of 61
kes1963 4 years ago
Sounds about right -- I can't seem to find Betty's biography about her life in TV, it's around here, though. It's called "Here We Go Again: My Life in Television". If you're a fan of hers -- or Allen's -- it's worth getting for the stories. :)

I think Brett could kick anyone's ass. Wasn't she married later to Charles Nelson Reilly?
leetonia 4 years ago
No, Charles Nelson Reilly was Gay. They were just good friends.

smashwhammy 4 years ago
Dosnt The Hollwood Squares Old Set and the Password Plus Set have some sort of resemblance? The hosts areas look awfully the same.
secondchance1977 3 years ago
Great to hear that electronic music theme again! It, along with the early 70s "To Tell the Truth" and the original 60's Jeopardy! theme are my vote for the canon of most memorable game show tunes.
Herbert7J 4 years ago
I like that theme, but I liked Password Plus' theme the best. That and the 70's Tattletales, and possibly Press Your Luck.
Jnelson09 4 years ago
If you look very closely on the left side of the set, after Brett Somers comes out, you might of thought that it was Allen coming out of the left side, but it's actually an ABC cameramen over there.
megamanj2004 4 years ago
That was Jack Klugman's head bending down. He stood up while she was entering.
sammyreed 4 years ago
I see him I did think it was Allen at first.

It's way cool to see an Episode of the First ABC Password series. I am a big fan but never have seen this version before. Thanks.

I agree! I love this theme. Along with the Pyramid theme, I think it is quite a catchy tune!
sweet2boy 4 years ago
Personally, I prefer the 75 theme...this one was OK, but not great.
WhatsAYak 4 years ago
Oh, good -- glad I'm not alone on that. I liked the 75 theme best, too. After that it's a toss-up between this one and the theme from "Password Plus".

Wasnt this right before they got divorced? Their interaction seems a little strained.
micmac99 5 years ago
Actually, if you remember in Brett's obituary, they never really got divorced. They just seperated.
