AA is really great for some people. The thing I don't like though is when AA says your powerless. Thats taking responsibility out of the equation. People who use have to realize they did choose the drug, no matter how addicted. I know its VERY hard to stop once your in the throws of the addiction, but it can be stopped. You do have a choice.
This junk about how "AA only works if you do the steps" is basically a tactic that makes AA impervious to criticism. If someone drinks, then they aren't following the program, and therefore it's their fault that they didn't get sober. It's inconceivable that someone might stop doing the program and go back to drinking because it wasn't working. This so-called doctor is a fraud. AA is a cult. Substance abuse issues are not diseases and this phony dr knows it. But he will continue to cash in on this form of voodoo medicine. Charley Sheen may be bat-shit crazy but at least he realizes AA in nothing but a rediculas cult. AA/Na sucks and anyone who has attended and doesn't see this fact is a fucking idiot.
@somethingdiffereable ...yeah, you're a fucking idiot. subutex, lofexidine and lorazepam are not voodoo and NA has a lot to do with why I and friends of mine are still alive. It might not have 100% success rate, but it's better than shooting up constantly and living in a bottle. So, yeah, fuck off.
@somethingdiffereable ...I don't believe in any god you're talking about and exactly what would you call addiction if not a physical and mental illness? Fuck, what's the point in asking you anything, you're clearly retarded.
@romeosdistress Maybe you don't get it but AA/NA has little to do with helping addictions and a lot to do with sin& redemption with god in Bills Wilsons silly little christian/fascist cult. They try to lie and dance their way around this issue but it is an intensly religious cult which hides its true intensions. Only in America could you find this type of deception. People are forced to attend this nonsense who have real issues and they are being duped. The whole so-called program is fraudulant
@somethingdiffereable Actually, I live in the UK, and I can't really speak THAT much for AA, because my primary problem was never alcohol, but I do know that even AA went under revision after revision to make it less and less about concepts of sin and redemption - Bill W was something of a grumpy old codger and did believe in sin.. nobody has mentioned such an outdated concept in my rooms. It's not a cult because there's no big organization around it. It was founded by addicts for addicts.
@somethingdiffereable ...and the addicts that started the meetings I go to are all atheists. It's a spirituali principle - allowing yourself to be open to the idea that there is SOMETHING bigger than you is something everyone can talk about. I never heard anyone mention 'God' in any religious context whatsoever'. Nobody makes any money by hosting the meetings I go to, it is a point of non-negotiation that they are self supporting. If it were fraudulent, I'd still be on heroin, wouldn't I?
@somethingdiffereable Originally I believed in the benevolent posturing of AA/NA. Then I met somebody who uses the program and started to become suspicious. Things he said, behaviors, the way the "program" got into his head started to be scary. Admittedly this was just one person, but still I had to investigate. It turns out that AA/NA is a direct descendant of a cult called the Oxford Group, founded by Frank Buchman back in the 1920s. 6 of the 12 steps were taken directly from their "laws".
Look your demons in the face, spit at them laugh at them, get pissed, tell them to go fuck themselves, whatever. I have come to the conclusion that the only way to get straight is to buckle up and do it on your own. I just lost a friend who drank himself to death. He was in three rehabs in a year, tried his ass off and now he is dead leaving three kids behind. There is no magic bullet to recovery.
AA saved my life. if you aren't actually in AA then you have NO idea what the hell you're talking about, and if you have been to AA and you still are against it, then i'm not going to say you're "wrong" and i'm "right". i just honestly feel really bad for you because you're missing out on a better life
@TonyDanza4Lyfe He's got fucking tigers blood, da fuck you got? Dumb ass little kid, thinkin' he be doin' work by calling the commentators voicing their own opinions "Morons." When the dude can't tell the difference between Nancy Grace and himself.
@RhetoricGamingHD I am a dumbass? I'm not the idiot who lacks reading comprehension and makes illogical points that just make you appear retarded. Commentators? Pretty sure the word is COMMENTERS. Jesus, this is the problem with the internet. Dumb people can't understand what actual people with intelligence say, so they call the smart people "dumb." What are you going on about Nancy Grace for? When did I mention her? When? That's like me saying "I like pepsi." Then you say "Milkshakes suck."
@RhetoricGamingHD Hahaha you're just proving more and more how unintelligent and ignorant you are. Have fun going to community college and living a wildly mediocre life.
@RhetoricGamingHD Wait, wait, wait. You are telling me to grow up? OH WAIT I DONT HAVE TIGER BLOOD I DONT HAVE ANYTHING. Fuck off, you imbecilic moron. You are a LOSER. You have to have brains to be in the medical field, unless of course you mean stocking the vending machines at the hospital. Have fun you nobody.
Charlie Sheen supports Alex Jones, who is one of the biggest and most notorious conspirator in the US as of now. The funny thing is, even though Alex Jones constantly thinks the bankers are trying to take over the entire world and start a genocide, (and did i mention that Alex Jones would have sex with our forefathers?) is that Charlie Sheen is considered Alex Jone's close confident....what the fuck?
An addict needs to try AA at first to even realize whats going on within their brains. Then you find a nice Dr. Drew to perscribe you suboxone, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat bitch.
Charlie has always been wild, Hollywood lifestyle he grew up in. Charlie is Charlie, leave the guy alone. He should be able to live the way he wants without everyone's advice. Rock On Charlie!!!!
Really "Dr" you want us to pray for someone? You can't drop science then go to batshit crazy religion. Sham. You call him crazy and you believe in an incompetent father figure in the sky? Go fuck yourself.
This guy is a moron. His thought patterns could also be evaluated and called some derogatory term. Anyone's could... everyone is crazy... some people just show it more.... some people have passion. It does not mean they are right or wrong.
it is so funny to read people's ignorant comments. i will just say this, 12 step fellowships work, but you have to do the work. you cannot just go to one and magically be cured. their is no cure, their is only a daily reprieve. stop hating and realize you don't know everything.
Anything, including 12 Steps, works if you "do the work", meaning not drinking and working to clean up your own behavior. Just as others "don't know everything" doesn't necessarily mean AA does know everything about alcoholism either. The point is we should be constantly looking for new and better ways to help more people, not simply regurgitating 75 year old nonmedical stereotypes, bromides and truisms of the Big Book and 12 Steps and always blaming the alcoholic when it fails.
@bafoone Sure they work for many people and I commend that. I think one some, including me, have a problem with is that the people who advocate the 12 step method see it as the ONLY way to do it. I have heard Dr. Drew tell people that their 25+ years of clean time is "no good, and not recovery," simply because they were not doing a 12 step. That is, frankly, cult-like in attitude, and not the attitude of a scientist...

the 5% figure is misquoted.. it's 5% never relapse. It's more like 25% recover.. which is true across the board. It only works when people do it, and some studies just look at who got sober after a meeting. that's like measuring cancer docs by looking at who kept the appointment whether they took the chemo or not.
It's amazing to me how little people actually know about 12 step programs. You can get the book for 7 bucks or free at a library and all are welcome at open meetings to learn.
AA is about following simple directions on-lined in the 12 Steps. Need to want to stop drinking and ask for help. Trust in GOD of you understanding, clean House and try to help another sick person recover. Great 3 S's of our disease, Self-pity, Self-righteousness, and Self-Bullshit
AA is BULLSHIT! Most are there because they have to be there. Only YOU can change you. Listening to a bunch of alcoholics talking about their problems only makes you want to have a drink.
I agree. As a professional, he should know better than to try to diagnose someone without going through the proper procedures. He should also know better than to broadcast this diagnosis to a national audience. In my mind, he ranks right up there with Dr. Phil. They're both quacks, who are just in it for the fame & money.
@domo1225 ya i feel u. whenever my friends tell me stories like... "we were smoking blunts and then so and so happened" all i can think about is how the fuck im gonna get high too
@domo1225 I'm gonna have to agree. I used to go, but I would still drink. Then I stopped going and I stopped drinking. It does work for some people who NEED to be constantly reminded of why they can't drink, but for people who can change through their own willpower, it does seem to be bullshit.
@domo1225 Don't say AA is bullshit because I happen to be a recovering addict but I go to AA because a lot of the people in the rooms have a lot of sober time. They share experience, strength, and hope. If you are not an addict or an alcoholic then you will never understand our situation. Its not just a bunch of alcoholics talking about their problems people also share how they have gotten through problems without having to use or drink and its helpful to people who actually need it.
@domo1225 a.a. is about the 12 steps same with narcotics anonymous maybe if you understood and worked a program you wouldn't be so critical of things you don't understand
@domo1225 Wow i cant believe 15 people thumbs upped that. Im not sure if you have been around all out addicts and alcholics, but it gets so BAD, and AA/NA 12 step program doesnt have the best success rates for the very reason you speak of, its true only YOU can change you, but 12 step has been proven to work if you work it, no matter how much your recovery has to take over your life. Im an addict myself, currently, ive had many family members be helped by treatment, forced and voluntary.
@domo1225 Your an idiot. Your either an acoholic too far gone for AA to do any good for and your still fucking your life up, or your parent is an acoholic too far gone for AA to do any good for and still fucking life up. Your part of that life. That's why your fucked up =)
Trying to change yourself without any kind of support system is next to impossible. AA may not work for everybody, but it obviously works for some people.
@domo1225 While I do disagree with the AA mentality, namely the "GOD" aspect of it, my dad has been going to meetings and has been sober for over 6 years. I'm not saying AA is perfect, in fact I see some of the guys he goes to meetings with, and most of them are nervous wrecks and some of them are ridiculously preachy about not drinking and "GOD". However, I know my dad to be a lot more level-headed than those guys, and overall it works for him. Bullshit? Maybe, but it does have some results.
@domo1225 That's what drunks do in bars, listen to alcoholics talk about their problems. In AA meetings, people who don't drink talk about living sober. You make your choices and you live with the consequences.
I can say most people in AA talked smack about AA before they finally accepted help. It is nothing new for a addict to be in denial and smack talk help, because they do not need help. The good news is yes AA will still be there if he ever decides to take some help, however this still has outside issues in this case that need obviously need attending to. I have been in his shoes (with 1 gram rocks though instead of 7 gram rocks) and I totally thought I was winning too.
Got to hand it to the Doc. He gave some very sound and solid answers. Drew strikes me as an honest broker. But they may be why he is in the spotlight to begin with. He's believable. I hate being that cynical but what are we to expect considering the sources?
AA doesn't have a "5% success rate". AA has helped the 5% of alcoholics that have a desire to stop drinking and change thier lives. Many alcoholics "need" to stop drinking - most don't "want" to stop.
What does he think AA's motivation is. He obviously has a problem with AA - what do we do that has him so anti-AA? Dupe drunks into selling big books at the airport? Our traditions don't even allow for celebrities to identify themselves as memebers - what are we trying to get away with?
@carell5 I am Responsible. When Anyone, Anywhere Reaches Out For Help, I Want The Hand Of A.A. To Always Be There. And For That, I am Responsible. We are responsible for giving back to the program what was freely given to us. We don't shoot our wounded, even if they do talk shit about the program. I've talked my share of shit about AA when I was out there. That's because I never was able to get honest about my life. It's hard to look back and see how big of an asshole I was for 20 years. Part1
@burt64nyg I was a Warlock Assassin with Tigers Blood and Adonis DNA! I thought I was "WINNING" and that I was God's gift to the world. It's all lies that the disease tells us. The saying we have is "Never shoot our wounded" and I fully agree with this. Alcoholics and Addicts deserve a second chance, even if they talk shit about the program. Good luck and KEEP COMING BACK!
@carell5 Part 2. But because I did, I got to examine the thing that I never was able to see, MY PART IN IT! Because of this, I could see other peoples points of view and take there feelings into consideration. I could see how much damage that was caused to my family, friends, co-workers, employers, and complete strangers. I could now being the taunting task of making amends to those groups and individuals. He healing process can begin. Charlie is just like me! (COntinued)
I have no desire to argue the traditions with anyone. It's disturbing to see AA denigrated and misrepresented - it is even more distressing when a doctor who espouses the 12 steps doesn't take the time to clarify the 5% statistic. AA doesn't hold out false hope to anyone - thoroughly following our path does not include relapse and breaking anonymity at the level of press, radio and film - even if you're identifying yourself as an ex member .
@carell5 Whether it is disheartening or not is not the point. No matter what is said, we do not shoot our wounded. If Charlie ever walked into my home group and asked for help, no matter what he has said, no matter what he has done, I would help him with no strings attached. Peoples opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one. All I can do is be of service to the ones who ask for help.
@burt64nyg How you got to how I would treat a returning "wounded" I'm not clear - in my 15 years sober - I have never broken a tradition - coincidentally, I've never broken a "slogan" - which you seem to prefer - of course an active addict is going to make AA wrong - it's part of the disease - I wish Dr. Drew had spent 3 seconds clarifying the rants.
It's all good - AA will be there and so will John Barleycorn - I just wish Dr. Drew would have clarified the point - there's enough confusion.
F*ck Dr. Drew. "You are all addicts, you will never be cured, abase yourself before an imaginary 'Higher Power', convince yourself that you are POWERLESS over addiction. If you attempt to unlock from this paradigm, you are mentally ill." Loser, get back in your troll-hole.
@jockdoubleday I wonder how much Dr. Drew is getting paid to go along with the Rothschilds' eugenics program, while Charlie, a real patriot, puts his reputation and his salary on the line for 9/11 truth? . . . And how much *extra* is Drew getting paid to negatively diagnose Charlie in a public forum?
The old "works if you work it" line by Pinsky. Maybe another approach is better for some people, but Pinsky, the addiction expert, won't even mention that such alternatives even exist. And diagnosing someone from a distance like that couldn't be more unprofessional.
Dr. Drew knows nothing about what goes on in AA behind the scenes. He only sees an inch deep and calls it truth. If one looks deeper in the abyss of AA one sees a frightening reality. It is like looking behind the gates of hell.

@romeosdistress Take your god, your stupid cult, your fake disease and shove it.
somethingdiffereable 5 months ago
@somethingdiffereable ...I don't believe in any god you're talking about and exactly what would you call addiction if not a physical and mental illness? Fuck, what's the point in asking you anything, you're clearly retarded.
romeosdistress 5 months ago
@romeosdistress Maybe you don't get it but AA/NA has little to do with helping addictions and a lot to do with sin& redemption with god in Bills Wilsons silly little christian/fascist cult. They try to lie and dance their way around this issue but it is an intensly religious cult which hides its true intensions. Only in America could you find this type of deception. People are forced to attend this nonsense who have real issues and they are being duped. The whole so-called program is fraudulant
somethingdiffereable 5 months ago
@somethingdiffereable Actually, I live in the UK, and I can't really speak THAT much for AA, because my primary problem was never alcohol, but I do know that even AA went under revision after revision to make it less and less about concepts of sin and redemption - Bill W was something of a grumpy old codger and did believe in sin.. nobody has mentioned such an outdated concept in my rooms. It's not a cult because there's no big organization around it. It was founded by addicts for addicts.
romeosdistress 5 months ago
@somethingdiffereable ...and the addicts that started the meetings I go to are all atheists. It's a spirituali principle - allowing yourself to be open to the idea that there is SOMETHING bigger than you is something everyone can talk about. I never heard anyone mention 'God' in any religious context whatsoever'. Nobody makes any money by hosting the meetings I go to, it is a point of non-negotiation that they are self supporting. If it were fraudulent, I'd still be on heroin, wouldn't I?
romeosdistress 5 months ago
@somethingdiffereable Originally I believed in the benevolent posturing of AA/NA. Then I met somebody who uses the program and started to become suspicious. Things he said, behaviors, the way the "program" got into his head started to be scary. Admittedly this was just one person, but still I had to investigate. It turns out that AA/NA is a direct descendant of a cult called the Oxford Group, founded by Frank Buchman back in the 1920s. 6 of the 12 steps were taken directly from their "laws".

it is so funny to read people's ignorant comments. i will just say this, 12 step fellowships work, but you have to do the work. you cannot just go to one and magically be cured. their is no cure, their is only a daily reprieve. stop hating and realize you don't know everything.
bafoone 10 months ago 16
@bafoone:
Anything, including 12 Steps, works if you "do the work", meaning not drinking and working to clean up your own behavior. Just as others "don't know everything" doesn't necessarily mean AA does know everything about alcoholism either. The point is we should be constantly looking for new and better ways to help more people, not simply regurgitating 75 year old nonmedical stereotypes, bromides and truisms of the Big Book and 12 Steps and always blaming the alcoholic when it fails.
zyxwut321 3 months ago

@domo1225 I'm gonna have to agree. I used to go, but I would still drink. Then I stopped going and I stopped drinking. It does work for some people who NEED to be constantly reminded of why they can't drink, but for people who can change through their own willpower, it does seem to be bullshit.
MikeDeFi 11 months ago 4
@domo1225 Don't say AA is bullshit because I happen to be a recovering addict but I go to AA because a lot of the people in the rooms have a lot of sober time. They share experience, strength, and hope. If you are not an addict or an alcoholic then you will never understand our situation. Its not just a bunch of alcoholics talking about their problems people also share how they have gotten through problems without having to use or drink and its helpful to people who actually need it.

Im an addict myself, currently, ive had many family members be helped by treatment, forced and voluntary.

Mikemaniax 5 months ago

I can say most people in AA talked smack about AA before they finally accepted help. It is nothing new for a addict to be in denial and smack talk help, because they do not need help. The good news is yes AA will still be there if he ever decides to take some help, however this still has outside issues in this case that need obviously need attending to. I have been in his shoes (with 1 gram rocks though instead of 7 gram rocks) and I totally thought I was winning too.

(COntinued)
burt64nyg 1 year ago
@burt64nyg
I have no desire to argue the traditions with anyone. It's disturbing to see AA denigrated and misrepresented - it is even more distressing when a doctor who espouses the 12 steps doesn't take the time to clarify the 5% statistic. AA doesn't hold out false hope to anyone - thoroughly following our path does not include relapse and breaking anonymity at the level of press, radio and film - even if you're identifying yourself as an ex member .
carell5 1 year ago
@carell5 Whether it is disheartening or not is not the point. No matter what is said, we do not shoot our wounded. If Charlie ever walked into my home group and asked for help, no matter what he has said, no matter what he has done, I would help him with no strings attached. Peoples opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one. All I can do is be of service to the ones who ask for help.
burt64nyg 1 year ago
@burt64nyg How you got to how I would treat a returning "wounded" I'm not clear - in my 15 years sober - I have never broken a tradition - coincidentally, I've never broken a "slogan" - which you seem to prefer - of course an active addict is going to make AA wrong - it's part of the disease - I wish Dr. Drew had spent 3 seconds clarifying the rants.
It's all good - AA will be there and so will John Barleycorn - I just wish Dr. Drew would have clarified the point - there's enough confusion.
carell5 11 months ago
@carell5 I didn't know that AA "Slogans" were only for AA. I didn't think that AA had a copyright on the cliche's.
