Its pseudo live: recorded live, lip synced later. you can see george laughing at john when he messed up the harmonica and george laughing at himself messing up the end of the solo. AlyRox. Most agree that this was their best "cover" song. The version you hear on the record, CD, mp3, & everything else is a "one-take" recording. Plus, John was in Paul's face getting Paul to "really put out" the vocal, which he did. Paul did that for John on the song Money, which is also a powerhouse cover. Never gets old, does it. I was there in England in 62&63 & lived thru it as it was happening. Yes, it was as if they were from another planet. Perfection from the beginning.
jimboyfrey, this was a TV show in London. Shindig! was a US weekly TV show for us teens back then. You want the Beatles, then you go to the Beatles, which is what Shindig! did. Note: most TV shows back then did not have the technical equipment to balance & broadcast both the vocals & music together, so it was not unusual for them to record the music the day before & then sing live on TV, as was the case here. John's harmonica & George's guitar were a bit off in a couple of places. Heaven!!!!

In a lot of TV shows they just mimed to the record but for a couple of others (including this one, and the "around the beatles" show from 64, they recorded "live versions" to mime to so it would be so obvious they were miming, because it sounds like the record.
@NonStopRocker seach for "Around the Beatles" and watch all the clips of the performance in that link and you'll see the same. you can see john mouthing different words or coming in late, ringo missing his cues in i wanna be your man, and listening for it in shout. plus you can tell because george is using his 12 string rickenbacker even though you cannot hear any 12 string sounds in the songs

ringo, was the most popular beatle of all in the u.s. originally. as I remember americans liked him about three to one over any of the others. and he was very likeable in all those early interviews. his humor,ease,playfulness, all endeared him to people in the states. they like that sort of thing very much. he seemed appoachable.

I see some glitches in George's guitar break in "Boys" too--it's likely these are prerecorded for sound quality & then mimed (vocals may be live), and the 'doubled' harp may be bleed from that augmented by the live feed on John's mic.

ringo, was the most popular beatle of all in the u.s. originally. as I remember americans liked him about three to one over any of the others. and he was very likeable in all those early interviews. his humor,ease,playfulness, all endeared him to people in the states. they like that sort of thing very much. he seemed appoachable.

I see some glitches in George's guitar break in "Boys" too--it's likely these are prerecorded for sound quality & then mimed (vocals may be live), and the 'doubled' harp may be bleed from that augmented by the live feed on John's mic.
Watever, I agree this is a great video take. By letting at least SOME 'live' stuff happen, Shindig provided some glorious insights in an otherwise fully-constructed time.
