  • Was this the director cut? I never seen this bit.

  • @radeakins No... this was definitely in the regular movie. I saw this a bagilion and one times as a kid.

  • @PhoenixPhire22 what I meant was, this sequence was shortened for the movie. I've got the DVD and this scene is about 2 minutes shorter than this version.

  • i had this film on a betamax top loader video i watched this every day until i fell a sleep i need to get another copy on dvd lol

  • love this movie. time when they still knew how to make a musical movie. for men.not well you know.

  • 2:04 "IM STRONG AT THE FINISH WHEN I EATS ME CARROTS IM POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN"

  • Popeye-"Buncha carrotsk?"

    Geezil-"No, no."

Popeye-"Ya ain't got no carrotsk? What're those, prunes?"

  • I love Popeye's 'mutters'. XD

  • Robin Williams is brilliant as popeye, this film was awesome :)

  • i love this movie childhood memories

  • This might be the most perfect casting ever.

  • I can see why everyone is getting out of Popeye's way and running from him...I wouldn't want to mess with a guy who walks down the street mumbling to himself (which Popeye seems to ALWAYS do in the cartoons), either. lol

  • 1:33 - Oh look, the local Glum Club...classic

  • I wonder what it's like to catch your death of mud.

  • Sheesh, I think this town led too sheltered a life. I do like Popeye's comments though.

  • @MWolfL: Sweethaven was always a bit sheltered, as it kept itself away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, hence why similar tourist port Malta was--at the time--the perfect locale to create Popeye's home territory.

@MsTwinkle101: Sailors back when had a seedy repuation, so yes.

  • @TherealRNO You seem to be a real big fan of this movie and Popeye. I'm just checking in here because I saw the documentary 'Who is Harry Nilsson?' last night and they talked a little about this movie in it. I never realized Nilsson wrote the songs for this. Loved this movie as a kid.

  • @ShelterDog: I've been a fan since the Fliesher days (I've read Segar's work in compilation pieces and things, but I wasn't born when it was done), because I was lucky enough to see the classic Popeye shorts unedited on my network stations as a boy in the 1980's.

  • @ShelterDog: Ditto for his roles in Jack [as Jack] and Patch Adams [as Patch Adams].

  • @ShelterDogs: Also, I've been a fan of Robin Williams for a majority of his career (ex: Happy Days [a Mork cameo], Mork & Mindy [as Mork], Popeye [as Popeye], Mrs. Doubtfire [as Mr. Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire], Aladdin [as Genie], Flubber [as Phillip Brainard], Death to Smoochy [as Randall], License to Wed [as the reverend], et al).

  • Bill Irwin was great in POPEYE.

He worked with Robin Williams twice that I know of.

In POPEYE and in the DON"T WORRY BE HAPPY music video.

That guy beside him in the first shot of the 1970s stuff looks like another one of the Sweethaven townsfolk in POPEYE.

  • I have an original copy of this movie with the RCA Stylus record movie player better known as SelectaVision. the record is pretty old but still in mint condition. i just love the vintage sound track.

  • i have the soundtrack on vinal got it many years ago when i was a kid(yeah im old lol)

  • I have this actual soundtrack on CD. It was a bitch to get. But, worth it. And, inexpensive.

  • OY! I didnt know Popeye was a jew

  • love the jew stereotype

  • a room for rink

  • The only difference that Popeye never met Olive Oyl, and Sweet Pea in Sweethaven. He never tries the Spinach can while he buys the carrots. I used to think that the story is like a prequel.

  • @1989gamemaster: When the sailor started, he was just an addition to Segar's Thimble Theatre, in which Olive Oyl, her brother Castor, and her ex-boyfriend Ham Gravy were the initial stars. But once Popeye was introduced, things took off. For all we know, the reason Poopdeck abandoned Popeye was 'cause Popeye refused to eat his spinach, but grew to like it over time, since Segar needed a reason for Popeye's strength.

  • Robin Williams hated making this movie, he was not even allowed to ad lib, he thought it would be something fun to do and establish credibility when Mork and Mindy was tanking in the ratings

  • Where did you hear that he hated it and couldn't ad lib?

  • Did they not like sailors? Is that why they were avoiding Popeye? Just wondering...

    =)

  • Nice lookin' knees, does it for me.

  • This is just hysterical! I wonder how much of it Robin Williams ad-libbed?

  • I remember seeing this movie when it first came out but I have seen it since.

  • i just came one here because its E .C Segars birthday....you REALY learn something new everyday

  • THANKS ESSEX!! AWESOME!!

  • I loved this movie. Loved the sweet pee song.

  • memories of a tiny little black and white tv and top loader video player when i was a kid it was my favorite movie

  • rm for rinc!

  • Popeye Village is in Malta. The whole film is made there

  • I was there only yesterday

  • @Biebseltje bullshit - it's sweet haven

  • I had forgotten how funny this movie was. Perhaps we need someone like Donald Moffet's character (nutty taxman) today to bail out states like California with their tax woes. Just have someone parading the streets imposing cockamamie taxes! :-)

  • I wish I could go to Popeye Village!

  • i've been there too :D

  • This is the best song in the movie.

  • I pays what i feels like paying...haha

  • Thank you so much for this on here. I was humming it the other day now I know what it is. :)

  • The movie's on channel 5 right now xD

i havnt got channel 5 though so i'm watching these lovely gems! ;d

  • can you upload the whole popeye movie? if you can, I would really love it.

  • If anyone is after a Popeye Limited Archival Edition Soundtrack CD. I have one spare for sale. Please message me for pictures and price.

  • Can you upload soundtrack versions of the songs including "Kids"?

  • @essexboi1993 By god you are the biggest nerd I have ever seen. NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD

  • @essexboi1993 Bill Clinton was impeached for the blow job administered by whistleblower Monica Lewinsky. Lulu who sings To Sir With Love. If Popeye cartoons were still on the air, there would never have been an ecoli outbreak in spinach. Popeye was strong to the finish cos he ate his spinach. Meaning when Popeye got cancelled, look out spinach-eaters.

  • @essexboi1993 I am looking for the soundtrack to the movie, Popeye with Robin Williams. Please e-mail me@ tomstone36@yahoo.ca

    Thank you!

  • @essexboi1993 meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • come in before you catch ya death of mud...lol

  • Too bad there was no rooms for renk.

  • Where was Popeye filmed?

  • Anchor Bay, Mellieha, Malta.

It is a tourist attraction now which you can visit any time of the year. I recently got back from there as this is my favourite film and it is fantastic. The buildings are still in excellent condition being 28 years old. Go to popeye malta . com

  • Is malta nice?

what else can you tell me about it (Malta) might consider going there some time

  • Malta is a lovely country. All of the residents are glad to see you as thats how they make most of their money. You have to keep in mind though that Malta isn't as developed as the UK or USA and they generally leave things the way they are. There are a few tourist attractions to go to. Would recommend hiring a car though. Much cheaper than booking through the rep. 2 weeks is too long really but I would say 1 1/2 weeks is perfect to see all the touristy stuff and to relax for a couple of days.

  • sounds nice. Can you reccommend a hotel? And perhaps tell me some nice places to go and things to see? And whats the capital called?

  • The hotel we stayed in was really nice called: RIU Seabank. It was perfect. The capital is valletta but I preffered to stay outside the capital (was really busy) and just visit. There is the blue grotto (lots of caves) really beautiful, blue lagoon (clear blue seas; the fight of Popeye and Bluto filmed here, luxury boat trips, underground caves, annualy festivals (truly wonderful and dedicated to their saints), Popeye's village, Valletta, Gozo and Comino (small islands off Malta). Loads of stuff

  • are you 15? If so me too :)

Malta sounds like fun. How many hours is it on a plane (from london)?

and whats maltas airport called and where is it?

    cheers

  • Yes, I'm 15.

From London it takes about 3 hours to get to Malta International Airport. The airport is located on the South of the island but it takes about 1 1/2 hours to get from 1 side of the island to the other.

    Hope that helped!

  • Do you know what the airport is called? And can you reccomend any beaches?

  • Yes the airport is simply called Malta International Airport and Mellieha Beach is the longest on the island and is one of the few that is just sand. Mind you, it does get very busy so make sure you get there early and if you order a sunbed make sure you order an umbrella alongside. Otherwise, YOU WILL GET BURNT haha.

  • And where is the airport?

    cheers

  • The airport is South of the island.

  • Does the south of the island have a name?

Anything else i should know/ any thing else interesting, eg temparature

    cheers again

  • I'm not sure about the region name of the south but it does get really hot. That's the reason Popeye was chosen to be filmed there.

  • cool - have you been there? How many times? And when (summer?)

    cheers

    Anything else worth telling me?

  • Yes. I went there in the summer only once but I do intend to go again some time soon.

  • Popeye: How much for the brocolli Geezil: nickel maybe dime Popeye: and the spinach? Geezil: dime maybe quarter Popeye: then how come carrots are a dollar? Geezil: 1.50 you buy what I don't feel like selling it will cost you two dollars ... Geezil: Ah Ah Ah Ah wait wait this is a nickel! Popeye: I'll pay yas what I feels like paying ... Taxman: You're not up to no good are you, there's a 50 cent up to no good tax... Love this movie!
  • Love this movie!! Did you know one of the goons (piano carriers). His name is Spike in the movie, is Dennis Franz from NYPD Blue...

  • No shit...and did you know that Popeye was played by Robin Williams?

  • Hambuger Guy! I forgot his name. But he brings me joy.

  • It's Wimpy.

  • thanks much for clearing that up for me ^_^

  • You're welcome.

  • You're welcome.

  • It's WIMPY, fuckhead

  • chill the fuck out. it was a simple ass question. Are you that much of an asshole to repond like that? Indeed I think so. Get that sand out of your cunt.

  • no i apologize, even though you don't deserve it by any means. That was rude of me. I won't stoop to your level. Anyway, if you read the previous comments, you would have known my question was already answered. But thanks anyway, jerk.

  • I have the UK PAL DVD of this and this part is just an instrumental with Popeye saying a couple of the spoken lines. Shame they cut out this song as it's quite funny.

  • Popeye kick ass!!!

  • who's the rabbi?

  • George W. Geezil, a local salesman who hates Wimpy to pieces. He's made a few appearances in the cartoons.

  • I So Love This MOVIE!

  • "Hey! What is this? This ain't the orchestra pits."

  • The Video version of Disney's Popeye didn't have this, this must be the DVD Version!

  • I have the UK PAL DVD of this and this part is just an instrumental tune with Popeye mumbling bits as he walks along. Parts of him bartering with that vegetable guy are cut too.

  • He absolutely sang that in the film! I am not sure what version the person before watched.

  • I know, this isn't a deleted song. You're thinking of Din' We.

  • He didn't sing this in the film, it was instrumental, so this is a deleted song, lucky you!

  • It is with total regret that I read that Robin, (Popeye himself) derides this film. I went with my own, "mudder" to see this in the theater and we thought, (to our simple selves) that this was a great movie.

    We still do =0)

    "Blow me down"

    We forgive ye Robin!

  • This movie actually tanked when it hit theaters in 1980. Blow me down!! I think it's Robin Williams best work. I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Popeye.

  • me neither. Dustin Hoffman was chosen to appear in it first and they was all ready to film and Dustin found a better job and didn't do Popeye then they saw Robin on Mork and Mindy and chose him. I am so glad they went with Robin and not Dustin. Robin can do all the actions and gimmicks just right.

  • You got carrots

    no

well then what are those prunes

    haha i love this movie

  • ack!ack!ack!

  • Like so many other songs, this was cut from the crummy dvd i bought :(

  • Yours, apparently, is a bootleg. I have a quality DVD, and all the parts I remember are in it. Even the infamous, "Oh, shit," line.

  • I have a proper PAL DVD, where is the "oh shit" line?

  • Shortly after the part where Pappy rams Bluto's ship.

  • "Oyls? That must explain it. She must be down a quart."

  • The best song on the soundtrack. I have it on cd. Great music overall.

  • Well whatta coinkidink that the best Popeye live-action film happened in the 80's! Blow me down!

  • Yeah. Too bad it was the only cartoon-to-live-action film that actually worked out. (I've heard horrible things about Alvin and the Chipmunks.)

  • NinjaGhost: Regarding The Chipmunks, if you're expecting something like the 80's revival version, then you'd might want to change your tune, because the movie is based upon upon the boys' initial meeting with Dave (which originally was in the 60's [though the movie has it set in present times, just to relate The Chipmunks to modern audiences], when the boys were more rowdy...even Simon). Hollywood's even bringing back The Muppets and Fraggle Rock by putting them on the big screen.

  • Yeah, maybe I was expecting a bit much. But they could've at least made the chipmunks about a yard tall.

  • NinjaGhost: How realistic would it be to have CGI, semi-realistic Chipmunks that are a yard tall? ^_^

Being a Henson fan, I just hope that what's left of Team Henson is overseeing the production of the upcoming Muppet and Fraggle Rock films. I mean, it would be incredibly stupid to have the PC police complain about the Fraggles' lack of pants, despite that fact that the message of the original show was to sweetly & musically promote global peace & solidarity, despite societal differences.

  • I never said it would be realistic. It would hit a little closer to home when compared to the cartoon, if it was, though.

  • Ninja: Too true, but again, like so many recent cartoon/comics-turned-movies, it was another money-making cash cow in the end.

  • i wish he hadn't disabled the embedding i would love to share this with my non youtube friends = )

  • I pays what I feels like payin'.

  • I don't think there could be a better Popeye movie, everyone looks right and is casted well, the songs are familiar and the movie has a great look to it.

  • this movie had catchy songs in it robin williams rox

  • williams was a damn master as popeye

  • I LOVE HARRY NILSSON :o)

  • the first hour and ten minutes of this movie is practically flawless, but i have to say i think it unravels at the end...but i love it. there should be more intelligent, daring musicals like this one.

  • Wonderful, wonderful...brings back memories. I have so many days like this!

  • Blow me down has to be one of my favourite Popeye songs!
