It was so scary at the time. I came home late that Wednesday night / Thursday morning to find everyone huddled around a tv set watching this broadcast. I remember it like it was yesterday,...
I remember a mid '90s trance song that used this part of the broadcast in one of theirs songs. i believe it was called "skies over Baghdad" but i cant remember who it was by and cant find the song anywhere :(
i saw the this part in the movie Live From Baghdad and HBO (in my opinion) did a pretty good job on the accuracy of dialogue and such in the movie. This broadcast is really what made CNN go from a once criticized network to the only 24 hour station, and only station who was able to cover the Gulf War at the time.
19 you would not only cry, but run like forest gump.. talk about war,.. when you become a man little girl, philliesguy then reflect..
oh , you like sports.. when you grow up be a man join the military , police, fire, medical.. then toss souless taunts into the world .. sports figures are punks, never worked a day in their lives.. punks.. your hero's
He was one of the first CNN anchors. It is amazing to think that in 1991 there was only CNN able to broadcast from Iraq like it did. Since he left CNN, I believe he has criticised them for going too much like FNC, which they have but they've had to change with the times.
Thanks for posting this stuff. I was there and remember watching thousands of planes in the air on the initial night. The lights were still on as they were over Saudi airspace on the way to Iraq.
Bernard Shaw is a Fucking liar. He is like Al Gole with a Dilution problems. I think Gore is worse, but this Shaw is full of crap. What would you expect from a Lib.
Thanks so much for posting! I was four at the time, no actually I wasn't quite four...But I have read "Live From Baghdad" at least twice, and watched that HBO movie several times. It's very cool to be able to hear the real broadcast.
@cjtopspin yeah, you know your fuckin nuts when you hide among iraqi targets just to report over a telephone.... i heard atleast 10 jdams hit within hundreds of feet of bernard
@101andrewj Actually CNN elected to remain after all other Networks were evacuating. Prime News Correspondent Bernard Shaw was supposed to leave the next day. He was only there to interview Saddam Hussien, and probably should have departed after the interview, but he remained a little too long. I loved it when he said, "I don't like being this close to the theatre." :-) I was sitting in my living room thinking, "Bernard, I-HEARD-THAT!!" :-)
@San47di i know i watched the movie..... im surprised that they didnt get bombed because the USAs JDAMS wer new at the time and dropped from extreamly high altitude to avoid iraqi AA... but none the less those cnn people are fuckin nuts
@101andrewj I Agree! LOL However, not only did their remaining put CNN on the Map as THEE Network to watch, but it also Greatly increased Cable TV subscriptions all around the World! CNN was able to get into practically any venue after that, & the regular TV News Networks have never recovered audiences even "near" CNN's totals. So I guess you can say, CNN risked lives to get to the top. Ted Turner will never be able to spend all his money! :-)
@101andrewj only problem - we weren't dropping JDAMS - we didn't have JDAMS - that system came into being because of the problems we had dropping our laser guided weapons in the first Gulf war.
poor Bernie shit his pants while hiding under a table......

Bernard Shaw leaves the Al Rashid hotel, and is debriefed by the U.S. Military,
"Hey Bernie, what did you see"
((Bernie)) "I'm not telling you a damn thing, I'm a journalist first, not an American"
What an absolute shame Bernard Shaw is to the United States....
