There's still progressive technical death metal... though it tends to suck. Listen to Obscura, for example, hell I'd love to see people's reactions to it. IMO they have some pretty good melodies and concepts in some of their songs.
And there's still good prog rock bands and stuff out there, such as Porcupine Tree...
And this is awesome, one of my favorite songs from them so far.
Saw them back in the day at the Spectrum in Philly when this album was released. One of the best concerts of the true era of ROCK! Magnum Opus live, what can I say... Turn this bitch up to "11"!
This was the best rock music ever written or ever performed. Nothing else can hold a candle to this album, except maybe Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon."
@GlowingSkull27 You are an idiot. Dave Hope and Kerry Livgren, as well as John Elefante all professed to be "born again" CHRISTIANS, still to this day.
@GlowingSkull27 Oh, it has nothing to do with slumber. Having integrity by telling the truth about matters is the important part of being a real man. Apparently this concept is lost on you. You know... not telling blatant lies about others!

Magnum Opus is a ridiculous masterpiece. I'm just going to enjoy listening to some mind-expanding brilliance while I work (and appreciate that I wouldn't have been able to do this without lugging around my CD case until very recently).
I can't believe people thought the best song on this album is "Carry on wayward son". That was the worst song on the album. The rest was fucking awsome!
wow, damn. I kind of forgot just how awesome, how epic this album was and still is. This one and The wall ...I was practically in tears . What the hell happened..You get moved to tears with today's music on how bad it is. Listening to this I felt inspired and emotionally moved. Its time to get me a new turn -table .still have over 2k vinyl LP's but until then I have and thank God for you tube. Just amazing all the music i have rediscovered.
This album consists of two themes- a deep regret for the TRUE beginnings of this country, and a need to establish contact with the Great Spirit, who is also the God of Abraham in whom we owe our very existence to. I personally feel a great shame for the conduct of our forefathers who raped and burned and killed to gain the territories that did not belong to us.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This album consists of a bunch of drugged out hippies trying to making sense of this fu'd world. The christianity part makes no sense to me regarding this music.
I agree with you that the religious component wasn't there. I removed my previous reply. I thought you were belittling their work. I think Kansas is vastly underrated. By the 80's they weren't the same unit anymore anyway.
I saw Kansas twice in the 70"s. They were awesome then but i appreciate them even more now. Maybe because in the 70's there were many other great bands, today is truly lacking.
The best concerts I have ever attended (791 total since 1974) always seem to be the prog rock bands. Kansas,Yes,Genesis, ELP, ELO, King Crimson, UK, Asia, Gentle Giant, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Rush, Sigur Ros, Alan Parsons Project etc etc . I guess that's where the talent is.
I was a big Kansas fan in the 70's, & I am just now rediscovering their music. I had almost completely fogotten it, but I have to say it sounds even better to me now... this group truly was a convergence of great talent & creativity both in musicianship & song writing (lyrics & melody)... I see nothing out there today that comes close to rivaling it.
i had already been into Kansas for a few years, but hearing the intro to this song the first time, is what did it for me at 15, especially Walsh's organ and Ehart's offbeat snare work.

Does Nickelback even write their own music? Or, do any of those mainstream cookie cutter bands write their own music?
If they do, they sure do not have much skill in creating the complexity of sound that bands in the 70s or 80s did.
Seems to me that commercial music is now the dumbed down basic version of music, no longer to radio stations play anything with creativity or structure. Just bland, repetitive, easy, 4 chord garbage they sell as New Music.
@howdyfeller What you're saying is true enough, but you do realise this process has been in effect for decades? Even famous stars of the 40's and 50's rarely wrote their own music. Commercialism hasn't just popped up in the last 30 years.
@ROONTANG yes but the big difference now is that only the bands that are controlled by the big record labels get any attention or airplay. Bands that produce and dictate their own sound and style are kind of blacklisted. My complaint isnt just about song writing, it is more about variety of music available to the masses. RIght now there is very little variety in commercial music, while creative and unique sounds are blackballed
@howdyfeller I see what you mean. There really is a conflict of interest regarding what music we get to hear. A lot of my favourite bands I've found accidentally on YouTube, or by trawling through Wikipedia pages. Now if labels decided to promote that music, imagine how many more fans the band would have, and in turn how much money the label would receive through sales!
@howdyfeller everyone knows nickel back sucks ass but you have to say that good 4 cord style punk is addictive when it has a good message like commentary on politics and issues of the day
@themadscientest I guess it depends on taste, but personally i do not really care for punk at all. Too unstructured, i guess you could say. At least for my tastes
@howdyfeller there was a little movement from unstructured punk to so called pop punk just because it hadsome structure but sadly real pop punk style was corrupted by bullshit emo
@themadscientest Well i have to agree that Emo is by far one of the worst music movements in the history of music. It is pure uncreative, cookie cutter nonsensical garbage. Next to rap and Hip hop they are the worst of the worst when it comes to actual musicianship
@howdyfeller theres a difference between rap and hiphop rap is shallow bullshit about hoes and bling and hip hop is the voice of the ghetto and it has real meaning and musicanship rather than autotune kongay worst
@charvinaldo Then that is where my problem lies. Bands that create generic music for as much quick money as possible, generally fade away and are forgotten within a decade. Real true artists cement a legacy that lasts for generations.
All of these current mainstream cookie cutter EMO and other bands will be thrown away like trash and discarded, then forgotten within the next 5 years for whatever the industry considers the news new craze. See Soundgarden and the like
@debbiechickie5 Well I use them as an example because they are the most "popular" to the younger generation. Rap is just not even in the music category to me. It is just Sesame Street with ghetto lingo, nothing more. It is about attitude and social rebellion not about music and sound. Nickelback is just the epitome of mainstream sell out music.
@SuperLAFWorld Everything you speak of is mainstream, regardless of the era. There is tons of new music now that you do NOT hear commercially because the corrupt music industry only pushes what they deem "popiular" which currently is dumbed down, simplistic cookie cutter music designed for 12 year olds.
Bands like Porcupine Tree, Threshold, RPWL, Sylvan, Circus Maximus, Symphony X, and so many more deserve to be heard by the masses.
@howdyfeller I like a lot of non-mainstream as well. Metal Church, Days of the New, Lich King, Fates Warning, etc.. But I might check out some of those you mentioned.
@SuperLAFWorld Good to hear. Amazing what incredible music is available, yet gets no attention commercially. You may also like Royal Hunt, one of the 90s power metal giants. (although that was after Power metal was not "cool" anymore and grunge was the latest gimmick to shove down people's throats)
@fraroc only in the mainstream or radio music. If you are a fan of unique bands and creative art, check out the bands that are on my page. I will not support any current mainstream artists, only those the masses do not get to hear. I am adding music all the time (currently around 320 songs) You may be shocked and surprised at what you hear
@howdyfeller Well, I agree with you. Ever Since 1995 when Nickelback came out with that alternative post grunge, bland, minamalist,4 chord, rock wannabe crap, with a horrible male singer. they made a shitload of money, becoming sucsessful and everyone wanted to be them. Blink 182, Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, Creed are all "Nickelback clones"
@fraroc Well feel at ease :) You will NEVER see such minimalist crap on my site. I try to offer music that is different than anything on the radio or commercial airwaves. Some bands may have a similar style, but they are far from bland :) See what you think of some of the 330 songs i have on my page to sate your appetite.
Not sure what your favorite style is, but there may be something for you on my page. I have a good variety
bar band? if it weren't for kansas, we wouldn't have bands like dream theatre. kansas started so many things and the general public has no idea. Ive heard them called one-hit wonders, too, but they sold platinum constantly. Mainstream people just don't know anything about music and want to keep it that way.
Because the past always seems better than the present.
When this album came out, Carter was president, we'd just lost Vietnam, the economy was in tatters and the planet was shitting bricks over the threat of nuclear war.
And back in '76, adults were longing for the '50s and everything was better...years ago.
A high school teacher of mine - a baby boomer - even put Kansas down as a "bar band."
Yeah, I know he's still alive. He's a good Christian too I suppose... He made great music and still does. but... seek out information on the true origins of humanity.... Sitchin, Laurence Gardner.,,,etc......
I remeber walking the 'woods' near my home when I was 15 smoking a joint and listening to this on my walkman. It was a majical place nd a majical time and their both gone. :-(
i was in high school when this came out. some of my friends turned me on to this and i will forever be gratefull. they don't make music like this anymore.
I just finished listening to this kick ass song. I remember listening to this song endlessly on a portable 8-Track player when I was a 9 year old kid. Kansas' finest eight and a half minutes, without a doubt.
I wanna go back to 1976 when I was in tenth grade and listen to this in my brothers red Camero on the 8-track for the first time for just one day...maybe two
i went to there newest concert sometime in may and they were great. kansas is the best band bcuz this kind of music was so un hurd of in the 70s they made a rock a whole new thing using all types of instraments no one rocks like them
i went to there newest concert it was in may and it was great kansas is the best band bcuz this kind of music was never hurd of in the 70s no one rocked like them
So all apreciation of their talent aside, Kansas lived in a world with such greats as YES, ELP, RUSH, GENESIS, and so many others. When will we learn to appreciate the "curve"? I feel so much sympathy to todays "student of music". So very sad for them, yet so real for us.
i listened to this when i was 10and saw them in 77the point of no return tour with my mom and brother.i knew they were great but didnt know what progressive rock was back then now its all i listen too. and yes they kicked butt .
I'd almost forgotten how great this album is, and is a masterpiece. I played the grooves off it back in the day. I first saw KANSAS live at the Palladium in NYC in 1978 for the POINT OF KNOW RETURN tour, when I was 17. I was blown away, and it was and is a hilight of my life. Kansas rocks!
Guitar solo at 6:22, not the most technical ever, not the most melodic ever, but I love the hell out of it! It's so bizarre!

Bands like Porcupine Tree, Threshold, RPWL, Sylvan, Circus Maximus, Symphony X, and so many more deserve to be heard by the masses.
Mainstream is all about money, not talent
howdyfeller 1 year ago
@howdyfeller I like a lot of non-mainstream as well. Metal Church, Days of the New, Lich King, Fates Warning, etc.. But I might check out some of those you mentioned.
SuperLAFWorld 1 year ago
@SuperLAFWorld Seems you veer towards the heavy and progressive metal, in that case here are bands I would highly recommend.
Circums Maximus, Andromeda, Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Redemption (Ray Alder - ex fates warning on vocals), Vanden Plas, Ayreon, Tommorow's Eve, Conception, Devin Townsend, DGM, NovAct, Opeth, Seventh Wonder, Threshold, Silent Call. That will give you plenty to satisfy your ears

@howdyfeller I've been liking most of the bands you've suggested so far.
Mostly Seventh Wonder and Threshold.

I am adding music all the time (currently around 320 songs) You may be shocked and surprised at what you hear
howdyfeller 1 year ago
@howdyfeller Well, I agree with you. Ever Since 1995 when Nickelback came out with that alternative post grunge, bland, minamalist,4 chord, rock wannabe crap, with a horrible male singer. they made a shitload of money, becoming sucsessful and everyone wanted to be them. Blink 182, Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, Creed are all "Nickelback clones"
fraroc 1 year ago
@fraroc Well feel at ease :) You will NEVER see such minimalist crap on my site. I try to offer music that is different than anything on the radio or commercial airwaves. Some bands may have a similar style, but they are far from bland :) See what you think of some of the 330 songs i have on my page to sate your appetite.
Not sure what your favorite style is, but there may be something for you on my page. I have a good variety

absolutely one of the greatest progressive instrumental rock tunes of all time. I never get tired of hearing it as long as it goes up to 11 :P

bar band? if it weren't for kansas, we wouldn't have bands like dream theatre. kansas started so many things and the general public has no idea. Ive heard them called one-hit wonders, too, but they sold platinum constantly. Mainstream people just don't know anything about music and want to keep it that way.
antisantaempire 2 years ago 3
Kansas were the last of an era of bands producing great music, I doubt most bands today would be able to out do their instuments as much justice.

why does it seem like the better and talented days of music are behind us.
uiwqe 2 years ago 3
Because the past always seems better than the present.
When this album came out, Carter was president, we'd just lost Vietnam, the economy was in tatters and the planet was shitting bricks over the threat of nuclear war.
And back in '76, adults were longing for the '50s and everything was better...years ago.
A high school teacher of mine - a baby boomer - even put Kansas down as a "bar band."
It's all a matter of perspective, my friend.
Arkady63 2 years ago
Correction: Carter had just been elected president.

I can still whistle every single note. God is it good. Sorry to hear about Kerry, the heart of the Band.

what about Kerry..he's still alive
fishbabysquirl 2 years ago
Yeah, I know he's still alive. He's a good Christian too I suppose... He made great music and still does. but... seek out information on the true origins of humanity.... Sitchin, Laurence Gardner.,,,etc......

Kerry suffered a stroke and needs our prayers..
Get well soon my friend !

I just finished listening to this kick ass song. I remember listening to this song endlessly on a portable 8-Track player when I was a 9 year old kid. Kansas' finest eight and a half minutes, without a doubt.

Might have to just agree with you here.

This is one of the great alnums of the 70's. I wore out that poor old cassette tape back then.

I often tell people the best music ever recorded was in the 70's-and this album is what I am talking about when I say that.
cyberwing777 2 years ago 2
I wanna go back to 1976 when I was in tenth grade and listen to this in my brothers red Camero on the 8-track for the first time for just one day...maybe two

So all apreciation of their talent aside, Kansas lived in a world with such greats as YES, ELP, RUSH, GENESIS, and so many others. When will we learn to appreciate the "curve"? I feel so much sympathy to todays "student of music". So very sad for them, yet so real for us.
