  • Guitar solo at 6:22, not the most technical ever, not the most melodic ever, but I love the hell out of it! It's so bizarre!

  • The "Great Work".

  • some guy who put a nugget in a biscuit told me about this so i searched it up

  • @squagglenater cool story bro

  • @DuykRuyk late comment much bro?

  • @squagglenater you mad bro?

  • @DuykRuyk you no life bro?

  • @squagglenater you have no pussy for how long bro?

  • the one person that disliked this dosent know music

  • the music number one for kansas is

--carry on my wayward the son

  • One of the best mini-suite ever by Kansas along with other immortal suite like Song for America or Cheyenne Anthem e.g.

  • Nickleback is alot better than most of the rock bands that have been around for ten years.

  • @fidosharkone Who you trying to convince of that?

  • @fidosharkone Your attempt at sarcasm is neither funny nor appreciated.

  • There's still progressive technical death metal... though it tends to suck. Listen to Obscura, for example, hell I'd love to see people's reactions to it. IMO they have some pretty good melodies and concepts in some of their songs.

And there's still good prog rock bands and stuff out there, such as Porcupine Tree...

And this is awesome, one of my favorite songs from them so far.

  • i had a whole story in my head about this song when i was stationed in korea 78-79

  • Saw them back in the day at the Spectrum in Philly when this album was released. One of the best concerts of the true era of ROCK! Magnum Opus live, what can I say... Turn this bitch up to "11"!

  • last comment 7 months ago,really?top comment 1 year ago,really?Only 126 likes,really?1 dislike,must be a music critic,really!

  • IT is sad thing that the world became so damb stupid and there is little of this type of stuff around to influence young people.

  • Wow, I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue! This is amazing!!!

  • @Butteroux dam you too

  • This is my favorite song on this album

  • it just remindes me of the old concerts..........brutality at its finest

  • Man...major overload of tallent.

Most of the rock bands today are lucky to have even have that.

  • @tacomonster98 half that

    sorry for bad text

  • Anyone finding that 240p is the only option for the quality of all videos? I have it set to show the better qualities, but it doesn't seem to work.

  • OMG Kansas has other songs other than Dust in the wind and Carry on my wayward son!?!

  • @kvn89 o.O wtf...?

  • Great Song :) This is probably my favorite. And this is coming from a middle school student! :D

  • @TheMouseSaysMoo Amazing for you to be exposed now!!! Check out "The Pinnacle" and "Closet Chronicles". Both by Kansas.

  • This has to has to do with the real Satanism.

  • @GlowingSkull27 You are an idiot. Dave Hope and Kerry Livgren, as well as John Elefante all professed to be "born again" CHRISTIANS, still to this day.

  • @jampitts Ok, good for you. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

  • @GlowingSkull27 Oh, it has nothing to do with slumber. Having integrity by telling the truth about matters is the important part of being a real man. Apparently this concept is lost on you. You know... not telling blatant lies about others!

  • @jampitts As if you know what people do behind closed doors. Shut THE FUCK UP you old conservative FUCK. You're brainwahshed like the rest as I can see.

  • @GlowingSkull27 I am a thinker. i do not follow the sheople as you do. Nice try however. I could care less about your so called delusional satanism either. Once again you prove yourself to be a liar and deceitful. You said I am not worthy of your time (Thank God, were that only true). Albeit you continue to reply to everything, then add even more. So shut up, anyone can tell you are a waste of breath. Now please scurry along back to your cozy little rat nest.

  • @jampitts You are a sophomore, in the truest, literal sense of the word. Tu caga poco! (Look it up.)

  • @jampitts I wouldn't expect a real christian man to be so judgmental of others without knowing the whole story. You're not worth my time

  • @GlowingSkull27 Plus I wasn't even calling them Satanist but who knows. Read b4 you call people idiots you old fuck. Your eyes must be failing you. And I'm not talking about Satanism created by Anton LAVEY for that is not the real Satanism.

  • I'm tired of coming to YouTube and hearing people bitch about Justin Beiber, Nickelback, Lady Gaga and rap. Can't I just enjoy some good music without hearing 1,000 people pick out obviously crappy mainstream acts to whine about? It's not even a challenge.

Magnum Opus is a ridiculous masterpiece. I'm just going to enjoy listening to some mind-expanding brilliance while I work (and appreciate that I wouldn't have been able to do this without lugging around my CD case until very recently).

  • rock n roll n is only howlin at the moon

  • i luv kansas

  • god, i hate nickelback

  • How the fuck can you dislike this!

  • how come when i tried to upload this in HD they blocked it in every country? but they let this guy put it up..wtf youtube

  • if anyone knows where the "Industry on Parade" and "Release the Beavers" sections begin/end, let me know.

This has baffled me for at least 26 years.

  • this is the supposed source of opus the penguins name

  • Still going strong as of 2010 (more or less). The intensity of rock with the complexity of classical. Amazing every single time.

  • I can't believe people thought the best song on this album is "Carry on wayward son". That was the worst song on the album. The rest was fucking awsome!

  • @blackcladlizard guitar hero 2 thats why

  • @blackcladlizard I think Carry on is a good enough tune, but definately not in my top 5 on that album. Magnum however, is my favorite on the album.

  • wow, damn. I kind of forgot just how awesome, how epic this album was and still is. This one and The wall ...I was practically in tears . What the hell happened..You get moved to tears with today's music on how bad it is. Listening to this I felt inspired and emotionally moved. Its time to get me a new turn -table .still have over 2k vinyl LP's but until then I have and thank God for you tube. Just amazing all the music i have rediscovered.

  • @pdfontana amen man. i couldnt agree more.

  • A Classic!!!

  • Comment removed

  • They just dont make them like this anymore. The 2nd side of this album is absolutley classic!

  • What a great album. Kansas had many. Thanks for posting!

  • This album consists of two themes- a deep regret for the TRUE beginnings of this country, and a need to establish contact with the Great Spirit, who is also the God of Abraham in whom we owe our very existence to. I personally feel a great shame for the conduct of our forefathers who raped and burned and killed to gain the territories that did not belong to us.

  • I agree with you that the religious component wasn't there. I removed my previous reply. I thought you were belittling their work. I think Kansas is vastly underrated. By the 80's they weren't the same unit anymore anyway.

  • Yeah I removed my post now too :) Anyway Kansas Rocked!

  • By the way, I love the handle.

  • @ergotistic ur stupid

  • @lilstewie86 you are an idiot how old are you 12?

  • @skunkanus1 lol, wat??

  • I saw Kansas twice in the 70"s. They were awesome then but i appreciate them even more now. Maybe because in the 70's there were many other great bands, today is truly lacking.

  • I was a big Kansas fan in the 70's, & I am just now rediscovering their music. I had almost completely fogotten it, but I have to say it sounds even better to me now... this group truly was a convergence of great talent & creativity both in musicianship & song writing (lyrics & melody)... I see nothing out there today that comes close to rivaling it.

  • LONG LIVE PROGRESSIVE ROCK!!!

  • i had already been into Kansas for a few years, but hearing the intro to this song the first time, is what did it for me at 15, especially Walsh's organ and Ehart's offbeat snare work.

    POWER!

  • I remember seeing Kansas play this at the Allentown, PA Fairgrounds in the summer of 1977. They were so tight. Phil's drum solo was fabulous.

  • KANSAS FUCKING ROCKSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • saw kansas at the randhurst ice arena

in '77 opening band Be Bop Deluxe.

that was in arlinton heights illinois

  • @joepaternoable Fuck yea!!

  • fvck yea is all I can really say!

  • dig that bass solo after the gnat bit......

  • Back in the 70s, this band was ahead of their time. Compared to most of the music of today, they still are. I loved seeing them in concert.

  • Kansas, Rush, and Alan parsons were and still are the most brilliant masterminds rock n roll has ever seen in my eyes. I was born in 81, but mom and dad raised me right!

  • I second that motion :)

  • I love the subtitles like "Father Padilla Meets the Perfect Gnat"

  • Comment removed

  • Leftoverture is a great album

  • These guys were the Jethro Tull of America.

  • d'you think that might be Father Padilla on the album cover of leftoverture...

in search of the perfect gnat!

  • and dont you believe its true

the music is all for you

it's really all we got to share....

    cause rockin and a rollin

it's only howlin at the moon

  • lets see nickelback write this song. muahahahah musical panzies.

  • lets see nickelback write anything with any kind of substance lyrically or musically

  • Does Nickelback even write their own music? Or, do any of those mainstream cookie cutter bands write their own music?

If they do, they sure do not have much skill in creating the complexity of sound that bands in the 70s or 80s did.

Seems to me that commercial music is now the dumbed down basic version of music, no longer to radio stations play anything with creativity or structure. Just bland, repetitive, easy, 4 chord garbage they sell as New Music.

  • @howdyfeller Just listen to non-mainstream. Problem solved. But I agree with your complaint

  • @howdyfeller What you're saying is true enough, but you do realise this process has been in effect for decades? Even famous stars of the 40's and 50's rarely wrote their own music. Commercialism hasn't just popped up in the last 30 years.

  • @ROONTANG yes but the big difference now is that only the bands that are controlled by the big record labels get any attention or airplay. Bands that produce and dictate their own sound and style are kind of blacklisted. My complaint isnt just about song writing, it is more about variety of music available to the masses. RIght now there is very little variety in commercial music, while creative and unique sounds are blackballed

  • @howdyfeller I see what you mean. There really is a conflict of interest regarding what music we get to hear. A lot of my favourite bands I've found accidentally on YouTube, or by trawling through Wikipedia pages. Now if labels decided to promote that music, imagine how many more fans the band would have, and in turn how much money the label would receive through sales!

  • @howdyfeller everyone knows nickel back sucks ass but you have to say that good 4 cord style punk is addictive when it has a good message like commentary on politics and issues of the day

  • @themadscientest I guess it depends on taste, but personally i do not really care for punk at all. Too unstructured, i guess you could say. At least for my tastes

But i would take it over any Seether song

  • @howdyfeller there was a little movement from unstructured punk to so called pop punk just because it hadsome structure but sadly real pop punk style was corrupted by bullshit emo

  • @themadscientest Well i have to agree that Emo is by far one of the worst music movements in the history of music. It is pure uncreative, cookie cutter nonsensical garbage. Next to rap and Hip hop they are the worst of the worst when it comes to actual musicianship

  • @howdyfeller theres a difference between rap and hiphop rap is shallow bullshit about hoes and bling and hip hop is the voice of the ghetto and it has real meaning and musicanship rather than autotune kongay worst

  • @howdyfeller Exactly. It was the same in the 70's and 80's though. There were just more stand outs getting record deals.

  • @howdyfeller they are in the business of making money, not art.

  • @charvinaldo Then that is where my problem lies. Bands that create generic music for as much quick money as possible, generally fade away and are forgotten within a decade. Real true artists cement a legacy that lasts for generations.

All of these current mainstream cookie cutter EMO and other bands will be thrown away like trash and discarded, then forgotten within the next 5 years for whatever the industry considers the news new craze. See Soundgarden and the like

  • @howdyfeller I love how when anyone ever has to bust on mainstream music, the example is ALWAYS rap or Nickelback..LMFAO. Niceklback is suckage.

  • @debbiechickie5 Well I use them as an example because they are the most "popular" to the younger generation. Rap is just not even in the music category to me. It is just Sesame Street with ghetto lingo, nothing more. It is about attitude and social rebellion not about music and sound. Nickelback is just the epitome of mainstream sell out music.

  • @howdyfeller Most popular? Not from my location it's not.

1.Mainstream rock isn't all bad. Sure the skill may be low but it can be a good sound.

2.I would put Linkin Park higher on popularity than Nickelback

3.Some of my friends know some pretty good "masterpieces" but they also like the newer music.

I like both ends. Plus the radio station I listen to plays new and old music: GNR, Zeppelin, Van Halen; Disturbed, Godsmack, etc..

I like all 5 bands and tons more though.

  • @SuperLAFWorld Everything you speak of is mainstream, regardless of the era. There is tons of new music now that you do NOT hear commercially because the corrupt music industry only pushes what they deem "popiular" which currently is dumbed down, simplistic cookie cutter music designed for 12 year olds.

Bands like Porcupine Tree, Threshold, RPWL, Sylvan, Circus Maximus, Symphony X, and so many more deserve to be heard by the masses.

Mainstream is all about money, not talent

  • @howdyfeller I like a lot of non-mainstream as well. Metal Church, Days of the New, Lich King, Fates Warning, etc.. But I might check out some of those you mentioned.

  • @SuperLAFWorld Seems you veer towards the heavy and progressive metal, in that case here are bands I would highly recommend.

Circums Maximus, Andromeda, Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Redemption (Ray Alder - ex fates warning on vocals), Vanden Plas, Ayreon, Tommorow's Eve, Conception, Devin Townsend, DGM, NovAct, Opeth, Seventh Wonder, Threshold, Silent Call. That will give you plenty to satisfy your ears

  • @howdyfeller I've been liking most of the bands you've suggested so far.

    Mostly Seventh Wonder and Threshold.

  • @SuperLAFWorld Good to hear. Amazing what incredible music is available, yet gets no attention commercially. You may also like Royal Hunt, one of the 90s power metal giants. (although that was after Power metal was not "cool" anymore and grunge was the latest gimmick to shove down people's throats)

  • @howdyfeller not even in the same ball park.

  • @howdyfeller Hell no. You are right.

  • @howdyfeller

    Preach, my brother!

  • @howdyfeller Music is dead

  • @fraroc only in the mainstream or radio music. If you are a fan of unique bands and creative art, check out the bands that are on my page. I will not support any current mainstream artists, only those the masses do not get to hear. I am adding music all the time (currently around 320 songs) You may be shocked and surprised at what you hear

  • @howdyfeller Well, I agree with you. Ever Since 1995 when Nickelback came out with that alternative post grunge, bland, minamalist,4 chord, rock wannabe crap, with a horrible male singer. they made a shitload of money, becoming sucsessful and everyone wanted to be them. Blink 182, Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, Creed are all "Nickelback clones"

  • @fraroc Well feel at ease :) You will NEVER see such minimalist crap on my site. I try to offer music that is different than anything on the radio or commercial airwaves. Some bands may have a similar style, but they are far from bland :) See what you think of some of the 330 songs i have on my page to sate your appetite.

Not sure what your favorite style is, but there may be something for you on my page. I have a good variety

  • absolutely one of the greatest progressive instrumental rock tunes of all time. I never get tired of hearing it as long as it goes up to 11 :P

  • bar band? if it weren't for kansas, we wouldn't have bands like dream theatre. kansas started so many things and the general public has no idea. Ive heard them called one-hit wonders, too, but they sold platinum constantly. Mainstream people just don't know anything about music and want to keep it that way.

  • Kansas were the last of an era of bands producing great music, I doubt most bands today would be able to out do their instuments as much justice.

  • I hope that high school teacher will read your point.

  • why does it seem like the better and talented days of music are behind us.

  • Because the past always seems better than the present.

When this album came out, Carter was president, we'd just lost Vietnam, the economy was in tatters and the planet was shitting bricks over the threat of nuclear war.

And back in '76, adults were longing for the '50s and everything was better...years ago.

A high school teacher of mine - a baby boomer - even put Kansas down as a "bar band."

It's all a matter of perspective, my friend.

  • Correction: Carter had just been elected president.

  • I can still whistle every single note. God is it good. Sorry to hear about Kerry, the heart of the Band.

  • what about Kerry..he's still alive

  • Yeah, I know he's still alive. He's a good Christian too I suppose... He made great music and still does. but... seek out information on the true origins of humanity.... Sitchin, Laurence Gardner.,,,etc......

  • Kerry suffered a stroke and needs our prayers..

Get well soon my friend !

  • I remeber walking the 'woods' near my home when I was 15 smoking a joint and listening to this on my walkman. It was a majical place nd a majical time and their both gone. :-(

  • Welcome to the real world my friend, but I can relate... Reality has some high points as well...Hang in there :-)

  • I'm 12,000 miles away from that reality, in Thailand. I didn't like the one my life had become in the US so I created a new one here.

  • I'm right behind you man. can you find me a scrabble partner ? ;-)

  • i was in high school when this came out. some of my friends turned me on to this and i will forever be gratefull. they don't make music like this anymore.

  • You are quite right.

  • What they all have said....and MORE!

    ALLTIMEKANSASFAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

There will never be anything like them.

    ONE OF A KIND4sure !!!!!

    ~D.B.

  • I just finished listening to this kick ass song. I remember listening to this song endlessly on a portable 8-Track player when I was a 9 year old kid. Kansas' finest eight and a half minutes, without a doubt.

  • Might have to just agree with you here.

  • This is one of the great alnums of the 70's. I wore out that poor old cassette tape back then.

  • I often tell people the best music ever recorded was in the 70's-and this album is what I am talking about when I say that.

  • I wanna go back to 1976 when I was in tenth grade and listen to this in my brothers red Camero on the 8-track for the first time for just one day...maybe two

  • 6:41 = FUCK YEAH!!

    What a great riff.

  • I love it as well 12eps

  • extraordinario...temazo...muy bueno.....es como un tema de LOS JAIVAS ....epico

  • Music today has nothing on this.

  • That song is so beautiful! The whole cd is great, anyway.

  • One of the classic rock albums of its day. It really takes me back.

    Thanks for the upload.

  • Excellent music soothes the savage beast indeed! 10*

  • K Rocks USA

  • This is what you get when you put a bunch of clasically trained musicians together. Kick ass. Now they just sample guys like this.

  • i went to there newest concert sometime in may and they were great. kansas is the best band bcuz this kind of music was so un hurd of in the 70s they made a rock a whole new thing using all types of instraments no one rocks like them

  • i went to there newest concert it was in may and it was great kansas is the best band bcuz this kind of music was never hurd of in the 70s no one rocked like them

  • epic very epic

good for Nameless theme song from Gothic series

  • Very fitting name for the song. Great work indeed!

  • final fantasy battle at 2:45 onwards

  • lol i was thinking the same thing

  • Kansas were one of the great bands in the 70ies... !

  • best old school intro ive heard in my life

the guitar is just so aewsome

  • definately the magnum opus of this band

    haha probably of the century

  • This song is so fucking good.

  • So all apreciation of their talent aside, Kansas lived in a world with such greats as YES, ELP, RUSH, GENESIS, and so many others. When will we learn to appreciate the "curve"? I feel so much sympathy to todays "student of music". So very sad for them, yet so real for us.

  • Comment removed

  • My theory is that to 'get' this and other Prog. you have be a musician or listen as one.

  • One of the most underrated rock songs of all time!

  • so true! Kansas rules!!

  • thank you and good night from kansas!!!!

  • the organ intro at 2.48 is great and of course the violin on this is nutz as the drums and guitar ok everything.

  • i listened to this when i was 10and saw them in 77the point of no return tour with my mom and brother.i knew they were great but didnt know what progressive rock was back then now its all i listen too. and yes they kicked butt .

  • es lo mejor que se puede oir del rock sinfonico

  • this is inasane but cool. sounds like a boss theme from Final Fantasy! (were kansas secretly japanese? i think we should be told)

  • I'd almost forgotten how great this album is, and is a masterpiece. I played the grooves off it back in the day. I first saw KANSAS live at the Palladium in NYC in 1978 for the POINT OF KNOW RETURN tour, when I was 17. I was blown away, and it was and is a hilight of my life. Kansas rocks!
