  • Celtic would have beaten Inter Milan over two legs. I have no doubt about that. I remember Facchetti ( who was not the capt of Inter btw ) saying that Inter Milan had never met a fitter or more determined team than the Celtic of '67. The Italian press referred to the Lisbon Lions as "the Scottish Furies"

  • @ThefightingCelt perhaps they would have, who knows !

Inter did without doubt underestimate Celtic, your captain at the time stated so himself !

  • @MrStruth

Inter had won two European Cups by the time they faced Celtic. They tended to underestimate everyone they played at that time. Helenio Hererra, whom they brought in from Barcelona, was a master tactician and thought that if his teams went 1-0 up, their catenaccio defence strategy (developed by an Austrian born coach in the 40s) would be enough to keep most opponents out. On thursday evening ( 25th of May in Lisbon ) Jock Stein's Celtic was proved him wrong.

  • Do any Rangers fans remember what happened 4 years later in lisbon?

  • yes, Celtic were given without argument the easiest ever run to a European final, Dukla Prague in the Semi finals :-0

They done what Raith Rovers done to Celtic in the 90s, they raised their game in a one off match against an off form superior Inter Milan side and won the match.

If you knew yer history you'd have known that !

  • @MrStruth i'm english but using dukla prague as an example is poor form, Czechoslovakia and it's teams were no mugs.

  • Dukla Prague may have been 'No Mugs', however they were certainly not in any way a big name in European terms.

Had Celtic met Inter in the Semi's .. A two legged game, there is no way they would have defeated the Italians.

In a one off game, as has been proven many times before, anything can happen.

Inter under estimated Celtic, Celtic raised their game and won the match ... Rangers route to the ECWC final five years later was far harder, defeating Bayern Munich in the Semis.

  • Mr Struth.Unlike myself you seem very biased.Celtic were a wonderful team and beat loads of huge names in the european cup in years to come after winning it against Inter.

  • @jaysea32 I never at any time said Celtic didnt have a fantastic side, I said they got lucky with their run to the final in 67, that cannot be denied !

They did of course record some great results in the seasons following Lisbon !

  • they beat Benfica,Fiorentina,Leeds,St Etienne,Red Star Belgrade etc.All fantastic teams at the time. Also losing on pens to Inter in the semis of 72.

  • One more point Mr Struth.Celtic werent under estimated.Celtic should have won 5 or 6 -1 never mind 2-1

  • 134,000

    that's unbelievable!

  • 134,000 there that day! Now THAT is Hampden Park for real!

  • Classic upload - well done sir

  • Rangers drawing 1-1 with Celtic Scottish cup final 1963, Rangers won the replay 3-0 :-)
