The destruction of the Death Star was an inside job, so that the Empire could get away with invading Endor. No one would've accepted invading a moon full of cute little teddy bears otherwise.
Love this scene - just one thing. Why didn't they send in fighters to attack the 3 Imperial fighters from behind at the start? Were they too busy attacking away from the channel? It would only take one fighter behind to create a problem - but far less exciting of course!!
Just before Grand Moff Tarkin was about to destroy Yavin IV, Luke blew up the Death Star. Knowing Han Solo, he would have let the Death Star shoot first.
The Force grants, among other things: precognition, heightened reflexes, and remote sight. Darth Vader is one of the most powerful Force users ever, and is essentially the second in command of the whole empire, and the MVP on the Death Star, a highy technical battlestation with all manners of scanners and equipment, and countless surface-based cannons.
At 2:20 when I was younger, I used to think he was saying "Luke, it's Witch doctor talking here to ya, whats wrong?" I always though it sounded strange until I heard it again a few years ago and finally understood it. LOL
seriously this is epic and yet retrun of the jedi makes this battle seem like a real joke yet its still just as epic if not even more georege lucas was a genious!
this is blue leader do you copy?... you are following one of our rebel xwings in intergalactic space do you wish to engage?... i didn't think so. luke, lord vader does not wish to engage at this time. were you able to destroy the death star?
@Steamrunner92 thats cool bro, and well u know star wars and star trek....like its funny how u like them both but hey we all got are opinions :), i wasent even born was this movie was made, this is one the best movies i ever seen and its old and great so your right, it is memorable, i dont know what star trek has butt i guess it might be memorable for star trek fans :)
@Jphabs81 It was mostly the hopeful optimism amid the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement, and the franchise was unique when it portrayed humans and aliens working together. Besides the white, male captain and doctor, you had the Japanese (Sulu), Russian (Chekov), Black Woman (Uhura), and the alien-human hybrid (Spock).
"If you want to shoot, shoot. Don't talk!" Immortal words of Tuco from Good/Bad/Ugly. Had Vader been silent (no "I have you now") before shooting at Luke, he would've nailed 'em!!!
Somehow, I think there should have been a brief scene where the entire inside of the Death Star began to rip itself apart and Governor Tarkin and all of his men go into an absolute panic before the big kaboom.
I love this scene but am I the only one who noticed that the victory was only possible because the tie fighter pilot with Vader got scared and in his panic flew his ship into Vader's causing him to tumble out into space? If it wasn't for him Vader would've blasted Luke's ass and Yavin 4 would've been oblierated.
@Biogiant22 The only ridiculous thing is that there's an exhaust shaft that is a perfectly straight line back to the reactor. However, I would think if it the reactor WERE somehow powerful enough to destroy a planet, it would blow several Death Stars to hell if it were to expend all its fuel virtually instantaneously. Hell, it'd probably be the only way to destroy it.
In real life, a lucky shot to a naval vessel's magazine could utterly obliterate it, no matter how big it is.
So what's with the surviving Y-wing? The two X-wings are obviously piloted by Luke and Wedge (although one would think Wedge would be well on his way back to base; not hanging around to take part in the daring escape), but I thought the Y-Wing squadron was annihilated.
Simple and brilliant. Each ship has a character attached to it, rather than being a random piece of space hardware in some cluttered, unintelligible CGI mess. We understand the objective that these characters are trying to achieve. We care about the characters. We can tell the good guys from the bad guys.
It's based on pretty much every oppressive regime in history. They're not particularly Nazi-like, nor particularly Roman- or British-like. Lucas took a little bit from everything, like most authors do. The Jedi are based partly on samurai, for example (I think everyone knows that, by now) and the Force is a type of animism (the idea that spirits inhabit and/or surround all living and even non-living things and concepts), which is a big part of Shinto, the traditional religion of Japan.
No - it's clearly based on the Victorian British Empire - hence why all Imperials, except for the one who got choked by Darth Vader - are played by British thespians.
Even Wedge is a British thespian of some worth - but, he was playing a rebel - so an American voice actor dubbed over his lines!
@jazzx251 Ummmm lol, no its not. The entire empire, is, as jmwestful says, based on nazi Germany. Its referenced in a lot of SW books (the making-of books).
Ummmmm.....noooooooo Standby =/= hold fire. Stand by in this situation simply means "patiently wait while the Death Star warms up its cannon." it was supposed to add to the epic that Luke sank 2 proton torpedoes right at the very last possible second.....
