D'Onofrio articulated the character, Pvt. Gomer Pyle, as both terrifying and sweetly poignant, a feat most actors can't pull off. So, why did this talented actor dive into back board bending, crotch eating roles in all those movies too numerous to name. His talent should have supported greater & far more substantive roles. I think in the eyes of directors & produces he lost a lot of credibility. Those Christ awful choices he made probably cost him an illustrious career.

These are the things that show if actors are great or not: When I can't recognize their personality at all outside the filming studio, and this is what D'Onofrio did right now. He is completely different than the detective he incarnates which means that he is TRULY acting, transforming himself into someone he completely isn't.
