I find it *mind-boggling* that Stephen McNally - who plays the brutal Locky McCormick played the sensitive, gentle doctor in the original Broadway production of "Johnny Belinda".
This is such as wonderful movie. I saw it years ago and remembered the heart-lifting story & how the actors- especially Jane Wyman & Lew Ayres- put their souls into the characters. Wyman's portrayal of the deaf-mute Belinda creates one of the most endearing characters in movie-history. If you didn't know better, you'd think the actress actually couldn't speak or hear. The cinematography, music, casting, etc., is nearly perfect for carrying the drama to its utmost height.
From the play of the same name by Elmer Harris, this story is based on the real life of Lydia Dingwell (1852-1931), of Dingwells Mills, Prince Edward Island, near the author's summer home in Fortune Bridge, PEI. (Principal photography took place in Mendocino County, California.)
All told, the picture was nominated for eleven Oscars; Jane Wyman won for Best Actress - as well as a Golden Globe (the film shared the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture with "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre").

Charles Bickford plays the father, both fine actors.
