Love the Carpenters ! Karen looks haggard and skinny . At the beginning slightly out of tune ! She hardly goes out of tune . Looked like something's bothering her . Not her usual self . Just my observation .
They were touring at such a pace at this point, singing the same songs over and over for years, it's no wonder things started to unravel shortly after this. Karen was at her peak vocally here for sure.
Everyone pales ih comparison to Karen Carpenter and always will. She is still singing in our hearts, our mind and in heaven. All she ever wanted was to be loved by her family, her fans and to have a family of her own, so down to earth and honest to her work with the pretension of the others who think they are so great. She was an example that miracles do come true, her voice is so beautiful.
The Carpenters at the top of their game. Certainly for me one of the most memorable concerts of all time. I'm still wondering why this doesn't have at least five million views. It would be fair to say I'm partial to The Carpenters.
Karen had such a beautiful angelic voice and it was rare to have that beautiful alto voice. It is so sad what happened to her. If only she would have saw it and knew how precious life really is.
I never got to see The Carpenters live...I thought i had plenty of time...Sadly that was not the case...Thanks for sharing this video look at what i always hoped to see in person...The music lives on...and it's just as strong...just as strong as it ever was!
Absolutely amazing! What a band! I always read that they were stellar in concert but never heard till now. Peluso's solo on Goodbye to Love is priceless.
Fantastic that we can still see beautiful Karen singing as only she could, Tony Peluso really tearing up the lead guitar, and Richard and the guys holding it all together, at that superb concert at Tokyo's Budokan in 1974. A concert for the ages that my Japanese tomodachi greatly enjoyed.
This concert never gets old, is always fresh. Hard to believe this concert is 36 years old, but it is, my how time flys. Richard, I am so proud of you, I'm sure that Karen is smiling down at you. You have carried the Carpenters torch well. I wish I could give you a Life time achievement award for all that you do! And yes, Karen was a Marvolus Soul, but so are you. Karen was a precious gift, a borrowed Angel, for the time she had with us she made millions of people Happy, What a beautiful spirit
Voice of an Angel, Eyes of God. This is my favorite concert of all time, I was 5 years old & to this day I have never seen anything even close that could top the Talent of Karen & Richard. Their band was second to none, & the stage communication was tremendous. They were having a great time doing what they enjoyed doing. We recently lost guitarist Tony Peluso in early June I was shocked to hear this, rest well my brother. Richard, Doug Strawn & all Thank You for being such an inspiration!!!
It's been said a million times but I have to say it again: her voice is something out of this world....sent from somewhere else, maybe heaven. It just does something to me...pure godliness. I love you Karen.
One of the greatest female voices ever showcased on the planet. This wonderful lady sang like an angel from 1969 to 1983. Her brother Richard was also amazing to recognize his sister's vocal talent and to create a world of music which allowed the everyone to enjoy in a timeless style. Thanks !!!
Friggya: I'll concede one of three things. Either: 1: You are hopelessly stoned on crack, or 2: You enjoy goading me with non-sense, or 3: you are so smart that there are few people on earth that can understand that seemingly nonsensical things you write. Personally I think it's 1. Regards.
I agree with what you're saying, man. My gramps hated the Beatles, my mum hated Nirvana.
People who say "Today's music is all bad!" are generalising and close-minded.
The Carpenters are obviously an amazing band... but if everyone lived in the past and didn't embrace the future... then we'd still be tapping sticks together around a cave wouldn't we?
Friggya: I'm puzzled by your posts. You make a distinction between 100% of 95%....that's pointless. You say "Classic rock" hasn't changed...well of course it hasn't, otherwise it wouldn't be classic would it? "Classic rock" is a radio format that covers a specific era and style of music....early 70s. They don't play Pearl Jam on classic rock stations for example, even though you and many people think they are great.
It's not "classic" as in "the best rock of any era," it's "classic" as in "this was what was considered classic rock in the early 80s when the format was invented." You seem not to understand that.
You say "stumble across a Carpenters video:" I don't know what your point is there, as I never do. As I said in another post in this thread and is clear from several of my posts here, I'm Carpenter fan #1. Finally "Great lead guitar" is a totally irrelevant comment to our discussion.
You have trouble understanding my point, but it's very simple. The quality of popular music and talent is relatively constant. That's my point. If you don't like today's music or artists, it's not that they're lousy, it's that you are too old to appreciate them. Just think about it, do our grandparents like the Beatles? No, they think they are uneducated, untalented screaming hippie drug addicts that shot the morality of the world to hell. Yet we know they are great....so who is wrong?
friggya: To whom are you speaking? When you say "your music," to whom are you referring? Whose music will fall into a dark hole in 20 years? It doesn't matter. The very fact that any epoch's music enjoys critical and popular success shows that that music has value to people. Pop music targets and appeals to a narrow age range, 13 to 25. That's just the way it is. If you are outside that range you won't like it and you're not supposed to like it. Nobody wants old 30 year old farts hanging around.
LarryBrown2 - actually I know many kids who like the Carpenters. Some say that their music is cheesy but agree that their sound, especially Karen's voice is amazing.
dabebe39: What's your point? Some kids can accept older music to a limited degree as "oldies," after it has aqed enough to be taken as "oldies" rather than "so last year." The Carpenters are so awesome that many people are going to recognize their greatness, but that didn't stop them from totally and unrecoverably going out of style in 1979 when Sid Vicious seemed cool. Just like The Beatles made Neil Sedaka seem passé, as with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, etc.
The sound on the "Palladium" concert, also found here on youtube, is much better than this concert. It must be a different lineup of musicians, and they do have a full orchestra on that one, or else that one is enhanced with some tracks. Check it out.
listen to them just once, and I swear!!..you'd listen again and again!!..why?..oh nothing only that they were simply the best of yesterday today and forever!!!
The overdubs are not missed when they performed live. In fact, it has more organic, soulful sound without the fluff. Karen was unsurpassed in her day, then and now.
Man, and I thought this concert sounded awesome on CD - it's ten times better here! They sound so amazing; Karen is phenomenal live and she looks absolutely gorgeous here.
I love this quote from a fellow Carpenters fan: "You can keep your Barbras, your Mariahs, and your Celines. In my book, they all pale in comparison to Karen Carpenter." So true - Karen was, is, and always will be the best. I pray she's in heaven singing glory to God, and well at last.
Well I'm Carpenters fan #1, and I've never understood what the fuss is about Barbra, but I think Whitney, Mariah, and Celine are really super-human singers in a different class. My honest opinion is that they are in a different league than a sweet singer like Karen and are "better" singers, but at least you have to admit that those singers are a different style than Karen, a style that features jaw dropping pyrotechnics.
Absolutely beautiful!! Karen in her prime. God, I can't believe they're repeating live the opening they did for the "Carpenters:The Singles" album!! Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or are they just getting the songs they don't want to play all the way through out of the way?
You also have to remember the important part Richard played. He arranged and created the sound for Karen. She probably wouldn't have sounded as good without him.
>> There is going to be no one like She, now so the next and far future
Not true. It's the "era" that is gone. The American culture has become very cheap and sleazy. Music has died. There are many people who have a potential to be as wonderful as Karen but never will be. It's her geniune sincerity that makes her shine. Todays society doesn't appreciate that, just money.
I get so sick of old farts espousing GaryNull's "the music has died" philosophy. It's not American culture, the music business, or anything else that has changed, Gary, it's you. You don't like the new music. Are you so foolish that you really believe that the 70s was the best music in eternity? Kids today think that Carpenters are garbage; just the way you think today's music is garbage.
The truth is people are too narrow minded to appreciate the talent and music in styles that are not in their ultra-narrow range of preference. To name some more recent MOR artists, do you think that Whitney, Celine, and John Mayer are lousy? If you've never heard John Mayer's 2003 hit "Daughters," it's intelligent, funny, thought provoking, mellow, and fabulous.
There's good music in every generation, you just have to open your mind. The same way you don't like today's music, your parents hated the 70s. Does that mean the music of the 70s was lousy?
such a shame someone with a voice like that isnt here anymore :(
