  • This explains why Villeneuve tried such a bonehead move in the Nationwide race in 2011 at Road America..............

  • 200mph... jeez, now a days would be barely 180

  • bem q Elkhart Lake podia voltar ao calendario da indy!!!!

  • thanks for putting this up. thisis real racing!

  • The best days of Indy Car racing. I first started going to CART races at Road America in 96, and went every year until the last CART race, and now I go to the ALMS race there.

  • @zhuff0517 you think it will ever come back? this series is what made usa racing interesting for me as a F1 fan

  • NOTHING like CART at Road America

  • What A field

  • What a pass for the lead. Two cars!

  • First time I saw CART (then Champ Car) at RA was in 95. Saw about 8 CART/Champ car races up there. Killer. 900 hp or so. If this so called Indy Car make their cars like this as far as performance, speed etc, I might be interested.

  • @MrIrishlogic go fuck yourself.... tracy made this what it was .... intense ... racing at its best,,,,,, it hasnt been the same since .... irl is nothing but shit.......

  • 1993 94 and 95 not only best for CART also best for all motor sports..

  • 1994 and 1995 were arguably the best years for CART. Rivaled even F1 at the time. Tony George killed it, and the IRL has never measured up since. Whats left of this series is now but a pathetic shadow of its former self...

  • Geez you cart blowhards still have sand in your vagina's for losing the war get over it and move on. FYI Indycar gos back to turbos in 2012,with

Chevy,Honda and lotus as engine suppliers.

  • @pcgeekamd I don't get over it. I just dont go ever to any EARL races.

  • Great to see little Al in his glory days. It was sad to see him fade away from the sport.

  • still love this video

visit Can-Am Cars ltd web site

  • Very nice race. Great and fantastic race. That moment was one of victory time in cart racing. I really enjoyed cart racing at that time.

  • @MrIrishlogic

PT failed to qualify for the Indy 500 this year which made me laugh. Jacques Villeneuve wasn't able to get a F1 seat this year but wants to return in 2011 with a new F1 team.

  • That was a good time for Indy racing

  • The great days. Wish they good pull in crowds like that again

  • today's indy cars are hondas vs hondas vs honads. come on man boring. honda vs mercedes vs dodge vs toyota vs volkswgan vs chevy. now thats racing. its not that hard fellas.

  • Hell yea, Tony George needs to be pushed out the only reason he has any controll is the indy speedway, I like racing history but the rACing there sucks anyway hardly ever a good finish, could do with out. I miss the scca too great racing!! well back then..

  • Al Jr is a great driver... good times... Very coool video ! ! ! Thanks ! ! !

  • That is the season that got me hooked on CART.

I really hope North american Open wheel can someday climb back to it's former glory.

  • I like the old TV coverage, no scrolling banners covering up the screen and distracting from the action.

  • Bring back the 2.65 liter turbo!

  • CART dominated in the 80's and 90's... Tony George killed the sport with the split....I miss those turbo charged FAST cars...!

  • and the engine sound..whooah!

  • The 1994 and 1997 seasons were my favourites.

  • yea lots more american drivers too... cant stand the idiotic series of today.. If it wasnt for Indy 500 champ car would have thrived... miss the days when they were true open wheel race cars.. today you might as well watch shifter cart racing..

  • memories!!...these were great days for OWR...loved these cars and there was a great field of drivers...anyone know what Brian Barnhart was diong in these days?

  • I believe Brian was a race engineer for...King Racing? I think he was Big Al's strategist in the 1993 Indy 500.

  • The all oval IRL sure was killing it. NOT. The problems now are:

1.) Nobody knows when and where they are racing on TV, so ratings suck.

2.) Ratings suck = low sponsorship money

3.) Inability to retain teams/drivers, so no fan famililarity with drivers/reams.

Solutions: Buy network time, get drivers in commercials for their sponsors, more races, stop the wing nonsense, need a marketing plan that involves the whole season.

  • rantanamo I agree with you.

Here are my problems (my personal opinion)

    1.) Low sponsorship money

2.) Agree with what you have to say for your first problem.

3.) Its kinda boring (my opinion, lol)

Plus, its kinda funny to see a young Jacques Villeneuve, lol :)

  • Well the comeback folowing the merger isn't looking so good, we are burried on VS. No one will find it unles they are looking, this is bad news I'm affraid.

what a series, the best IMO, yeah you can say F1. but this was so competetive and varried with road, street and oval, both miles and super speedways and of course Indy.

God Damnit, I like F1 but it doesn't replace this, and neither does the IRL running cars that sound terrible, most importantly they aren't at RA.

  • Stop your whining your sissy. You have beef with today's unified series then let Tony George know whining doesn't do anything. As American open wheel fans (which I've been since '93) we must state our opinions but to those who can do something. I'm sick and tired of whiners and whiners are partially what killed American open wheel in the first place. People who looked on the past and didn't support neither series during the split and killed itself from the inside out.

  • Them are the facts asswipe

I'll be sure to let George know how you feel becuase I'm sure he cares as you are such a big shot like me posting on Youtube.

Fact is, the split killed it, either way you want to look at it.

The races are on VS. and it isn't going to survive up there when it will attract only us the fans, no one is going to pick it up in cable oblivion

  • Asswipe?...How old are you now? Haha..

As I said fans like you killed the series and your whining doesn't help out. You can yell at Tony George all you want but when was the last time you emailed Tony or IMS to tell them how you felt? Instead of whining on youtube send them a youtube message and tell them how you feel.

The weakness of Americans. We like to witch and whine but never take any of the responsibility for ourselves. Buy tickets, watch the tube, and tell others - all we can do.

  • OK, I'll be sure to do that......My Lord you are an ignorant sod.

I have supported both serries since the split, I went to Road America for Cart and go to Milwaukee for the IRL. To think that I have any say and to call me a whiner for having no say such as yourself is just silly. And then you call me immature....OK whatever. You win I guess.

Don't you think it is rather hard to tell people to watch when many don't even have VS. Our hopes lie in that network getting big, thats it.

  • Ignorant? I think the fact that you think you're whining is going to change anything and gain fans is ignorant.

I never said you had no say I'm just saying that whining is not saying anything at all. When a person whines he/she has complains about the status quo but brings no ideas of their own. That's a whiner and that's what you're doing.

I do agree that I wished Tony would had picked a better TV package but what did he have really? Pay ESPN and ABC to show races? That's BS! Versus pays...

  • But I know what you mean and like you its hard for me to watch American open wheel be in its present status. The split did kill the series (even though it wasn't the only thing) and now we have Tony George who can't seem to get anything straight.

I do have faith that American open wheel will rise again. It may never be what it was but it'll be there and irrelevant. Now if ABC/ESPN can give some support for the series like Versus does we might have something. Everyone is under the toe of NASCAR

  • Who said I think I can change shit, you are the one that seems to think that you can.

Frankly I don't know what to do, The split was the begining of the end but Champ Car did themselves in, I understand that. The split was the catylist though.

Honestly I would have done whatever I had to do to stay on ESPN at least for a few years if possible. We need fans right now more than anything. I do like the coverage on VS. but no one is seeing it.

Also, they need turbo, like yesterday.

  • Agreed. If we had Versus coverage, effort, and money on ESPN/ABC us open wheel fans would be in heaven. I also believe that turbos need to be back which Indycar said they will be but personally it's taking too long maybe too late.

I know the pain of being an American open wheel fan and though we have our differences 90% of everything else is pretty much the same. My buds and I talk about it all the time so it's nothing new. Just try to stay positive if possible if not just cheer on Graham...:P

  • I'm with you on Rahal, I was a fan of his old man growing up and Graham seems to be a chip off the old block.

  • Same here though I started watching CART during Bobby's twilight years. I believe Graham will continue to impress as the season goes on but I believe next year he'll truly compete for a championship. Graham thus far has been a victim of bad luck and hopefully this well end.

Graham's name has often been linked to the USGPE seat but I hope he isn't offered the seat and even if he is offered I hope he doesn't take it. Indycar needs Graham not F1. Jon Summerton 4 USGPE.

  • i love paul tracy :) so glad he got a ride for the 500 this year

  • Hey Tony, look at that crowd you stupid m___ f___...

  • Al Junior continues to look more and more like Big Al.

  • Definately a track that needs to come back to the schedule.

  • 31 minutes*

  • 3 minutes.. lol howd u do that?

  • This was posted before the 10-minute limit was instituted.

  • GO CANADA GO!

  • I miss this.

  • So crazy to think how awesome CART used to be. hopefully the merger helps open wheel

  • It well don't worry about it. I know the areo package and engine package are not there but the talent is I believe. Rahal, Marco, Viso, and even Briscoe. Sure its not Micheal, Mansell, Emmo, Tracy, and Jaques but to set the standards so high is unrealistic and makes Indycar's future doomed to fail even before it began.

  • i saw all seasons every year.

    they are the best...

  • ya he is

  • ahh the glory days of cart. Now watch the 2008 irl season opener on youtube at homestead and you see what i mean.

  • Road America will be back on the schedule next year. Just one more comment though, there really shouldn't be an argument on which series is the lesser of 2 evils, because, if u are like me, u become a fan of the team, not the series. I more of an open wheel fan, but I do watch nascar and Grand Am because of one team, Chip Ganassi Racing.

  • Yeah, but I have always loved the Andrettis, and Newman Haas when they had Michael, Mario, and Nigel. But I am also a fan of competitive racing, so when everyone went to IRL it was boring to see Bourdais' dominance.

  • 30 Cars on the grid at Road America in 1994, 25 was nice at Homestead, but 30 would be better. Or even better, a field of 33 at every event!

  • Nothing you can say that hasn't been said about CART not Champ Car because champ car who bought out CART sucks my balls.

I went to Laguna Seca in 1996 and blew my freakin mind with the absolute power and intensity of these cars in person. Just breathtaking.

Going to IRL is like a lame celebrity race.

  • breaks my heart to see how amazing this series was, all that they had with driving talent, teams, large amount of cars, drop dead gorgeous cars. :( Sigh, wtf, how far it's falen.

Now IRL is a complete sad joke of a series.

  • We can only Hope the Merger brings Indycar Racing back to it's former glory.

  • you, me, and hopefully the rest of open wheel fans we still have.

It has a chance, it does, it's just all up to the series to bring back those famous tracks, surfers paradise, laguna seca most importantly, keep the majority of those great permanent road courses and throw in some oval's for good measure.

Irratates me that was it champ car? that didn't want to be another F1 and only do road courses.

  • hiroshi021 you are right in everything you say.

The IRL is a sad parody of what Indycars were 15 years ago.

  • im sorry but any damn series that lets woman like Milka Duno who will never win anything if everyone else gets their cars destroyed, and danica patrick who is a Anna Kournikova of racing isn't great in my book.

But what IRL was is just some pop mainstream form of entertainment.

  • I'll never forget that day seeing my hero villeneuve blow the doors off of the Penske

    juggernaught!!!

  • now he's the one breathing in dust in NASCAR.

  • Agreed. Open wheel racing will be great again one day hopefully.

  • damn look at the crowds, aint like that anymore.

Hopefully with the IRL Champ Car merger open wheel racing can start to come back

  • super villeneuve!!!!

  • Paul Tracy shut up!

  • Good memories. Can't believe I was 8 sitting at turn 1 for this race. Now I am working this race.

  • Love this video. How do you post an 30 minute video?

  • This was posted in the early days of YouTube when the only condition was a file be less than 100MB, unlimited time.

  • great....18:15 sec....JV overtake Unser and Tracy

  • Great scene at the end of the video; Emerson Fittipaldi beside Jacques Villeneuve. A legend of the past alongside a legend of the future.

  • i miss the old cart days big car counts i think this race had 32 cars in it

  • An Alms car would whip an IRL car round here. Let the IRL stick to the roundy roundy bollox

  • hahaha nice joke, you got it the other way around!

  • The IRL will soon be racing at road america as they will add more road/street tracks to the schedule.

Think about it, next year the IRL will use paddle shifters and supposedly in 2009 will take 10 inches from the wheelbase. Do these sound like the actions of a series commited to ovals.

  • They can race now if they want, but I don't think they want to be embarrassed.

  • Tony George killed American Open Wheel Racing. Fuck him and his family.

  • cosign

  • Thanks a lot for the video !! It's really nice for a French CART fan like me to have the possibility to see these good old videos of a great championship :)

  • I never missed a race from 94 to 99 when Greg Moore was killed. This was a trip back in time before JVs head got so big. In F1 he actually said "anyone who doesn't make over a million dollars a year is a loser"

    What a shcmuck he became.

  • Comment removed

  • He most certainly did....Do your homework.

F1 magazine about 9 years ago

  • I missed the old days of CART.

  • Great video

  • Formula 1 should have used Elkhart Lake in the 1980's and the early 1990's

  • It still should! Screw Indy. The only reason it is there or the Glen or Laguna Seca is that those tracks can't or won't bow to the demands of F1, implementing full enclosed air conditioned garages and all the other BS they mandate.

  • GREAT RACE!

  • Shame this guy wasted his career away on booz.

  • i REALLY miss these days!

  • George created the IRL just so his son and friends could win the 500 cause they would never win it if they had "real" talent driving the 500.

  • WELL said man

  • Tony George is an idiot.

  • Those were the days! JV is still Captain Awesome!!!

  • 30 cars in the race?!!!

    Man those times were great.

And I do agree with you Maloyo...it does get ya a lil down.

  • I was 9 when this happened, and I remember to this race like it's now running... Very good to see it again! Maybe these where best years (1993-95) for IndyCar and CART. It's sad, that Villneuve now in F1 is doing not that good job...

  • This was great, thanks so much for posting it. I've been watching old CART video in this website and while it is wonderful, it also makes me very sad. CART had it all and it was wonderful! I do miss it.

Thanks so much Tony George for saving American formula car racing.

    Mary

  • outstanding stuff. thanks!

  • Ah yes those where the days..sure do miss them but sure hell don't miss the politcs that were in CART. Boy oh Boy that was a racing series! Many thanks for sharing!
